They were originally thought to be genuine, but the Lyttelton executors disclaimed them and Walpole who had originally accepted them agreed. But because their content was so believable and typical of their education, rank and characters the letters became frequently quoted and are recognized as a true representation of the upper class at this time. Mrs. Peach later married Lyttelton's son Thomas, (the wicked Lord Lyttelton) who was noteworthy for his wild ways in a time of profligacy as well as his dream of his own death three days before he died.
