Sometimes attributed to Mathurin Cordier the work covers appropriate modes of conduct at church in school at the dining table etc.; also present are a multiplication table and the 126 "Quatrains" four-line instructive verse maxims written by Pibrac. Almost all of the text — which is decorated with ornamental capitals and headpieces — is set in => the famous typeface modelled after 16th-century cursive letters and nicknamed "caractères de civilité" in honor of the present work making the book pedagogically useful both as a guide to good manners and as a pattern for formal handwriting.<br>    While the various approbations and permissions are dated 1714 1735 and 1736 Jean Garnier did not succeed his father Pierre in the publishing business until the early 1750s — and the family members who followed Pierre including Jean's mother the Veuve Garnier; Jean himself; and his sons Jean-Antoine and Etienne had a documented habit of stretching royal permissions past their originally intended spans. Whatever year it was when Jean reprinted this textbook from Pierre's stock => both the original and this version are now scarce: WorldCat finds no institutional locations anywhere reporting holding the edition with Jean Garnier's imprint and only one holding each of the printings from Pierre Garnier and the Veuve Garnier.<br>    Provenance: From the children's book collection of Albert A. ‎Edition bilingue. Provenance ancienne effacée sur le titre. Ex-libris Octave Chavaillon sur le premier contreplat. Habile restauration à la reliure. Première édition de cette traduction. Exemplaire réglé avec ex-dono authoris sur le titre, de la main de Nicolas Harbet, le traducteur.D’une ancienne famille parlementaire, Pibrac (1529-1584) étudia le droit sous Cujas et Alciat, et se rendit célèbre par ses talents d'orateur et son caractère au parlement de Toulouse. Il fut choisi par Charles IX pour être l'un de ses représentants au concile de Trente. En 1565, il devint avocat général au parlement de Paris, sur la demande du chancelier de L'Hospital, puis, en 1570, conseiller d’État. Il fut chancelier du duc d’Anjou, futur Henri III, en Pologne, puis de Marguerite de Navarre, pour laquelle il manifesta une passion amoureuse qui lui attira la défaveur de la princesse et les moqueries des courtisans. Pibrac acquit de son temps une grande réputation de poète par ses quatrains, dont la première édition parut à Paris en 1574. Les nombreuses éditions et réimpressions de ces Quatrains témoignent de leur grande notoriété jusqu'au XIXe siècle. Florent Chrestien, le premier, les a traduit en vers grecs et latins (1584), Augustin Prévost en vers latins (1584), Martin Opitz en vers allemands (1626), Pierre Dumoulin en prose grecque (1641). Nicolas Harbet (1610-1670), avocat au parlement de Bourgogne et secrétaire du roi, en donne ici une version en distiques latins, dédiée à son compatriote bourguignon Denis Marin de La Châtaigneraie, qui fut intendant des Finances de Louis XIV.‎
