‎In 2006, 500 years after his death, the Royal Library of Belgium organised an exhibition revealing treasures from the era of Philip the Fair (1478-1506), last duke of Burgundy. This volume reunites most of the papers delivered at a conference held during the exhibition, increased with four new chapters. Ten specialists from Belgium, the Netherlands and the United States discuss the book market and its place in society in this transitional period when manuscripts and printed books were produced and used next to one another. The contributions are organised in pairs around five topics, whereby in each case one author treats manuscripts and the other printed books: Philip the Fair and his books, art in books, music in books, politics in books, the book market. ‎This is the first of a projected series of four volumes describing manuscripts and fragments in British libraries containing commentaries on the Latin Aristotle. This volume covers the Bodleian Library and the college libraries of the University of Oxford. It lists 397 items, including portfolios of fragments from more than one original book, dating from the late twelfth century until c. 1500. While many of these manuscripts have come to Oxford from elsewhere in Europe, some as recently as the twentieth century, the majority were made locally and used in the medieval University. Many of them, such as the important Canonici collection in the Bodleian Library, have not been adequately described before, while most of the anonymous commentaries have not been listed at all. Four indexes are provided to facilitate searching the main text.‎

‎Volume IV is devoted to the items in the Beinecke's general collection with the shelf numbers 481, 482, 483, 484, and 485, each a discrete collection of manuscript fragments. The text consists of 285 entries -- describing single leaves, groups of leaves, or pieces of leaves -- of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts written between the seventh and sixteenth centuries in Western Europe. They are, for the most part, the battered remnants of otherwise lost books from the Middle Ages. Almost all of the fragments included in this catalogue are in Latin, although there are a few items in Middle High German and in Hebrew. The two larger groups of fragments described here (MS 481 and MS 482) were assembled originally as a palaeographical collection documenting a wide range of Latin bookscripts used during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Included are specimens in Uncial, Visigothic, Merovingian, Beneventan, and humanist scripts, as well as numerous examples of Caroline minuscule and Gothic book hands,with a particular richness in eleventh- and twelfth-century manuscripts from Southern Germany. The fragments described in the catalogue are almost all derived from books. There are manuscripts of biblical texts (with and without glosses), classical and patristic authors, exegetical treatises, sermons, liturgical works, monastic rules, medieval encyclopedias, legal works, scholastic treatises, schoolbooks, grammatical works, medieval chronicles, calendars, and medieval poetry. Classical authors are represented by manuscripts of Vergil and Cicero; the Greek fathers by Basil and Origen (in Latin translation); the Latin fathers by Augustine, Jerome, and Gregory. Medieval writers include Isidore, Bede, Paul the Deacon, Notker Balbulus, Bern of Reichenau, and Thomas Aquinas; and on the secular side, Boethius, Priscian, Wirnt von Gravenburg, Eberhard of Bethune, and Ludolphus de Luco. There are numerous liturgical manuscripts, many of them with early examples of musical notation, including a substantial portion of an eleventh-century breviary; sequentiaries with works by Notker Balbulus and Gottschalk; and seventeen leaves of a twelfth-century antiphonary from Lambach that shed new light on the performance there of a Magi play. Manuscripts written in Italy, Spain, France, England, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and the Low Countries are represented. ‎The present publication offers the first comprehensive survey of manuscript illumination in Flanders during a period of rapid and exciting transition: the reign of Charles the Bold and the time following his death until c.1530. This is the area of the so-called Ghent-Bruges School when illuminators set out to develop a completely new aesthetic approach to the painted page. The author traces the origins of this development and demonstrates how it is rooted in historical and economical changes of the period. He does so by investigating in detail the careers of half a dozen illuminators, the most prolific figure among them the Master of the Dresden Prayerbook. Being long since recognized as one of the inventors of genre painting on the basis of his remarkable sense for psychological observation, the present study identifies him as a great landscape painter, too. In more than ten years of research the author has been able to enlarge the corpus of works attributable to the Dresden Master from 20 to 61. Among the newly discovered items are more than a dozen dated or datable works, which for the first time allow to establish a sound chronology of his oeuvre. Thus, in addition to reconstructing the biographies of several major artists and presenting ideas about the market for and the production of manuscripts in Flanders, the study will make a hitherto largely unknown body of material available to scholars, art lovers and all those interested in the history of Flanders in the 15th and 16th century. Ein Gebetbuch, das sich heute in Dresden befindet, hat dem vielleicht bemerkenswertesten flamischen Buchmaler des spaten Mittelalters seinen kunsthistorischen Notnamen gegeben. Als einfuhlsamer Psychologe besticht dieser Kunstler ebenso wie als temperamentvoller Erzuhler, er gestaltet stimmungsvolle Landschaften ebenso geschickt wie lebendige Genreszenen und ist nicht zuletzt ein begnadeter Kolorist. Von den Zeitgenossen, die oft nur Vorlagen reproduzieren, hebt ihn seine besondere Gabe ab, neue Bilderfindungen zu schaffen. ‎This study deals with the work of the most prolific Dutch book illuminators, the so-called Masters of the Dark Eyes, named after the most conspicuous aspect of their style: the dark, heavily accentuated shadows round the eyes of the figures. With their elaborately illuminated manuscripts, these masters completely dominated book production in the County of Holland during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Their work is characterized by an overwhelming wealth of decorative and pictorial richness, which is especially evident in the unusually ornate programmes of the Books of Hours, and a new type of border decoration derived from the Ghent-Bruges School. This style of painting was practised by many artists of differing talents, as demonstrated by the large number of surviving manuscripts. Not all of the illuminators worked in Holland. Some of them settled in the Southern Netherlands, others emigrated to England, where they illuminated manuscripts for members of the English court. This monograph seeks to order, analyze and evaluate the work of the Masters of the Dark Eyes, and to position their achievements within the context of book illumination in the Northern Netherlands during the 'Waning of the Middle Ages'. It explores a virtually uncharted territory of Dutch manuscript painting. The accompanying descriptive catalogue provides complementary information on more than 70 manuscripts, many of which have never been published at length before. ‎Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy from 1419 to 1467, distinguished himself as a patron of illuminated histories and historical romances, and as host of the most lavish entertainment of the middle ages. The Banquet of the Pheasant was a response to the Fall of Constantinople, and it was staged to enlist support for the coming crusade. Two splendid tributes to heroic crusaders from the duke's family tree, commissioned in the 1450s, provide an opportunity to bring these elements of his reputation - bibliophile and would-be crusader--under the same lens. Our perception of the Charlemagne Chronicle in Brussels (BR, MS 9066-68) and the Jerusalem Chronicle in Vienna (ONB, Cod. 2533) is enhanced when we consider other examples of "crusade literature" and remember the perennial goal of recovering Jerusalem. This study of the visual and literary projects that supported Philip's efforts to launch a crusade, long after the days of the "classic" crusades, sets these manuscripts in the context of his court's interest in history writing and updated historical romances, and against the background of the French crusading tradition and the Burgundian incarnation that succeeded it. ‎Le Ci nous dit est un texte essentiel pour la spiritualite de la fin du Moyen Age. C?est un recueil d'instruction chretienne, anonyme, ecrit en francais vers 1320. Le manuscrit du Musee Conde a Chantilly est a la fois le plus ancien, et le seul a etre magnifiquement illustre, avec pres de huit cents enluminures, et donc le seul a avoir conserve la formule originelle. La reproduction et le commentaire de la totalite de cette iconographie exceptionnelle revelent ainsi l'existence d'un veritable cycle enlumine de la culture et de la morale chretiennes, et qui se trouvait a disposition d'un laic, pour sa devotion personnelle.‎

‎Les inscriptions ont pour fonction de porter a la connaissance du public le plus large et pour la plus longue duree diverses informations. Cette fonction de "publicite" assure a l'epigraphie une place particuliere parmi les sources historiques. S'impose d'abord une approche technique. Il faut tenir compte de la nature du support, de l'emplacement et de la disposition des textes, de l'ecriture, de la langue, de ceux qui ont commande ou inscrit le texte, du recours qu'ils ont eu aux emprunts, aux formulaires, aux actes de la pratique diplomatique. Mais la tache principale de l'epigraphiste reste la mise en oeuvre des inscriptions comme apport a l'Histoire. A travers les textes on peut isoler divers elements de la culture de leurs auteurs: la connaissance de l'Antiquite, le recours tres frequent a la Bible, directement ou a partir de la liturgie, source essentielle pour l'epoque. Le monde des saints est omnipresent, qu'il s'agisse de saints modeles, de saints protecteurs ou de saints fondateurs. Les inscriptions sont aussi un moyen privilegie pour comprendre les programmes iconographiques et penetrer la pensee de leurs auteurs. Elles nous eclairent encore sur la theologie de l'epoque et parfois comportent un enseignement moral a la maniere d'une predication. Enfin il faut rappeler le domaine ou les inscriptions sont les plus nombreuses, celui des epitaphes. Le present ouvrage est le fruit de trente ans de recherches. Il se veut un instrument pour etudier cette source et en tirer toutes les informations qu'elle porte. Il est complete par une soixantaine d'illustrations et le commentaire de plus d'une centaine de textes. ‎Fondee en 1079, l'abbaye benedictine d'Anchin etait un des principaux monasteres du Nord de la France. Riche, celebre, puissante, elle etait aussi un foyer culturel important, comme en temoignent le nombre et la qualite de ses manuscrits, ainsi que les textes qui y furent ecrits. J.-P. Gerzaguet, qui a deja ecrit sur Anchin une excellente these, publie les chartes de l'abbaye. De la fondation a 1201, ce sont 316 chartes qui sont editees, le plus souvent d'apres l'original. Elles permettent de mieux connaitre l'evolution du tres riche patrimoine du monastere, mais eclairent aussi les relations avec les pouvoirs civils et ecclesiastiques. ‎Cet ouvrage abondamment illustre reunit sous forme de catalogue 251 notices consacrees a des plaques de reliures dont plusieurs sont inedites et dont certaines etaient inconnues jusqu'a present. La recherche des auteurs s'est principalement portee sur les bibliotheques francaises, mais aussi sur de nombreux fonds de province et de l'etranger ainsi que sur quelques collections particulieres. Les notices, accompagnees chacune d'un frotti, sont classees suivant l'ordre alphabetique des themes decoratifs. Ce classement permet de mieux integrer les cas douteux et de constituer un instrument de recherche facile d'acces. Chaque notice comprend trois parties: identification de la plaque, liste et description des livres manuscrits ou imprimes qu'elles decorent (avec indication des possesseurs et des cotes anciens) et enfin un commentaire historique indiquant notamment les elements permettant de dater ou de localiser une plaque. Une bibliographie termine la notice. Les auteurs ont etabli les limites chronologiques de l'emploi des plaques en France depuis environ 1480 jusqu'aux annees 1535/1536 en faisant ressortir les influences venues des Pays-Bas ou ce type de decoration etait connu des le XIVe siecle. Le role de Paris est evidemment essentiel, mais d'autres centres importants ont pu etre reperes, a Lyon notamment, mais surtout en Normandie. La consultation de l'ouvrage est facilite par une table alphabetique generale et par une liste des plaques divisee en trois parties: localisations sures, localisations possibles, localisations douteuses. Vient ensuite une table par cote des livres cites. Non seulement les historiens et les historiens du livre, mais egalement les amateurs et les collectionneurs de reliures disposent desormais d'un instrument de reference qui n'est certainement pas pret d'etre remplace. La legende qui accompagne les planches fournit toutes les indications necessaires a leur identification: cote, date, lieu de copie, renvoi au numero de description (voir Bibliologia 16) ainsi que le numero et la face (recto ou verso) du feuillet ou la betaradiographie a ete realisee. Pour faciliter les recherches, les reproductions ont ete classees par theme et deux index accompagnent ce classement: l'un donne la liste des reproductions par manuscrit, l'autre les ordonne par rubrique et ajoute, si necessaire, les references aux dessins de filigranes publies dans les repertoires.
