‎From the 16th to the 19th century, illuminated manuscripts were collected by the great printer-publisher Christophe Plantin and his Moretus successors and descendants. Ranging in date from the 9th to the mid-16th centuries, the manuscripts in the Museum Plantin-Moretus come from all over Europe, chiefly the Southern Netherlands and France with a significant representation of 15th-century Dutch illumination. More surprisingly, about a quarter of the collection comes from England: manuscripts of the 10th to 15th centuries that left the country with Catholic refugees. Alongside the acknowledged masterpieces and rarities, like the Bohemian Bible of 1402, are volumes that have remained virtually unknown, their aesthetic appeal and historical or textual interest often passing unnoticed in the absence of published reproductions. In this beautifully produced catalogue, each of the 102 volumes is illustrated in colour, with more extensive coverage of the 55 volumes with the most rewarding illumination. For the first time it is possible to gauge the extent and nature of this fascinating and under-explored collection, still housed in the building on the Vrijdagmarkt in Antwerp to which Plantin moved his famous sign of the Golden Compasses in 1576. E). La part prise par les codices europeens conserves en leur entier ou presque avait commence dans le tome II ; ici, elle augmente et, apres 1250, ces manuscrits seront les plus nombreux. Bien qu?ils ne soient pas representatifs de leur epoque, nos manuscrits dates donnent des indices forts des changements qui se produisirent dans l?histoire des textes et des mentalites durant la seconde partie du XIIe siecle. ‎The present work, starting volume of the new Series Ibero-Caucasica, contains a complete edition of the Old Georgian texts in Asomtavruli script that are preserved in the lower layer of the famous palimpsest Codex Vindobonensis georgicus no. 2 of the Austrian National Library, Vienna. Based on a thorough analysis with the spectral imaging method provided by the MuSiS imaging system, more than 95% of the original content has been deciphered and restored. Of the 13 original manuscripts written in Asomtavruli script, six pertain to the so-called "Khanmeti" period of the Old Georgian tradition extending from the beginning of Georgian literacy in the 5th roughly to the 8th century A.D. The Khanmeti texts range from fragments of early translations of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke), parts of the Old Testament (Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Esdras), and the Protevangelium of James to legends of Saints (Cyprianus and Justina, Christina). The post-Khanmeti texts (dating roughly from the 9th-10th centuries) comprise fragments of a Lectionary (lectures from Exodus, Isaiah, the Gospel and the 3rd letter of John, and Acts of Apostles), Old Testament texts (I and II Chronicles), and several homiletic texts (Epiphanius of Cyprus on Measures and Weights, Gregor of Nyssa on the Build of Man a.o.). In the edition, all texts are represented both in a diplomatic transliteration (in Asomtavruli script) and a plain transcription (in modern Mkhedruli script), together with digitally enhanced images of the pages concerned. Additionally, the text passages are contrasted line by line with the most relevant parallels (Old Georgian, Greek, Armenian, Syriac, Latin). ‎Du milieu du VIIIe s. a 1536, date de la dissolution des monasteres anglais par Henry VIII, diverses eglises d?Europe occidentale (principalement de Benedictins et de chanoines) eurent coutume de solliciter des prieres pour un/des membre(s) defunt(s) de leur communaute au moyen de brefs ou de rouleaux mortuaires, transmis par des brevigeruli (ou porte-rouleaux). Les brefs mortuaires, reduits souvent a des languettes de parchemin, ecrits en nombre, etaient laisses aux eglises visitees. Quant aux rouleaux mortuaires, ils etaient constitues d?un nombre variable de feuilles de parchemin (le tout pouvant atteindre 30 m de long) ; chacun d?entre eux debutait par un faire-part de deces (ou encyclique) ; a tour de role, les eglises visitees par le porte-rouleau apposaient un accuse de reception (ou titre) ; frequemment, ils etaient opisthographes, c?est a dire ecrits sur les deux faces. L?encyclique peut etre precedee, a partir du XIIIe s., d?une peinture ou de dessins (souvent d?excellente qualite) et suivie, a compter du XIVe s., d?une liste des confraternites conclues par l?eglise expeditrice (sorte de liste-programme pour le porte-rouleau). Si la plupart des brefs mortuaires ont disparu en raison de leur petite taille, les rouleaux des morts ont eux-memes beaucoup souffert au cours des ages, nombre d?entre eux ayant meme ete depeces pour servir de feuilles de garde a des mss. Au total, on ne conserve (en original, par des copies ou des editions anciennes) qu?environ 450 pieces, alors que certainement des milliers ont circule. Les plus anciens originaux connus sont des fragments de la seconde moitie du Xe s. Plusieurs criteres ont prevalu pour le choix des quelque 110 planches presentees. Tout d?abord, bien sur, un critere paleographique, car l?ensemble des ecritures est date et localise avec precision, ou du moins datable avec une fourchette chronologique etroite. On trouvera dans ce volume des ecritures livresques, des mentions avec lettres enclavees (a rapprocher de celles des pages-titres des mss. ou des inscriptions lapidaires) comme des ecritures cursives ou personnelles ; les pieces retenues ont les origines les plus diverses, francaises, anglaises, belges, hollandaises, allemandes, etc. Ensuite, un critere historique : une copie du debut du XIXe s. temoigne de la mise en circulation de rouleaux mortuaires par l?abbaye de Ripoll, malheureusement incendiee peu apres ; ou encore un titre de Noyon montre l?aprete des luttes intercommunautaires a propos des reliques. Egalement, un interet documentaire, comme la charte scellee, tenant lieu de ? rotulus ? , de l?abbesse de Pielenhofen (Baviere ; 1435). Ou encore, un interet artistique avec la reproduction des magnifiques dessins ornant le debut du rouleau de Lucy de Vere, prieure de Castle Hedingham (Essex ; vers 1230) ou prepares pour le rouleau de John Islip, abbe de Westminster (vers 1532). Dans bien des cas, les itineraires peuvent etre etablis avec une grande precision : une carte retrace celui d?un rouleau mortuaire expedie en 1406 par Saint-Bavon de Gand qui, en 20 mois, recueillit plus de 800 titres d?Amsterdam au nord a Barcelone au sud. ‎Separe du Breviaire et du Psautier, le Livre d'Heures etait devenu des le XIIIe siecle le livre de devotion du laic. Il correspondait a l'extension de la pratique de la lecture dans les couches de la societe, alliee a un evident detachement par rapport a l'emprise de l'eglise. L'intensification du culte porte a la Vierge Marie firent d'elle le theme central du Livre d'Heures qui s'organisa autour du petit Office qui la celebrait. Il contient aussi le textes d'autres Offices, dedies en general au Saint Esprit, a la Croix et aux morts ainsi que toute une serie de prieres et invocations variant selon la devotion de leur possesseur et commanditaire. Ce Livre n'etait pas destine aux Offices celebres dans l'Eglise; il etait sense etre utilise par n'importe quel laic, regulierement, aux heures canoniales, dans la solitudes de sa journee domestique. La pratique de recueillement que ce livre impliquait etait en meme temps un hommage et un lien avec la Vierge mais aussi un plaisir pour les yeux, car il fut des le debut, abondamment illustre et decore. Le Livre d'Heures devint ainsi un des joyaux dont s'enorgueillaient les plus riches et les plus nobles qui pouvaient se permettre les services des meilleures miniaturistes de l'epoque. Il fut aussi, plus modestement, celui de tout un chacun, a la mesure de ses moyens financiers. Le nombre impressionnant de le Livres d'Heures executes firent que l'on les appelle couramment aujourd'hui, les "best sellers" des derniers siecles de l'epoque medievale et ceux des annees qui suivirent l'introduction de l'impression. L'abbaye benedictine d'Einsiedeln (Suisse) est depuis des siecles une importante eglise de pelerinage. Sa bibliotheque abrite, parme des tresors insignes, douze Livres d'Heures qui sont ici etudies et publies pour la premiere fois. Leur provenance, la date d'execution et l'artiste ou l'atelier responsables de leur illustration etaient restes inconnus. Il s'est avere que parmi eux se trouvent aussi bien un manuscrit parisien d'une grande elegance , oeuvre d'un maitre repute, qu'un Livre d'Heures pittoresque et extremement rare illustre par une moniale alsacienne et destine a une nonne d'un Monastere suisse. Le corpus d'Einsiedeln comprend egalement un precieux et minuscule manuscrit flamand, ainsi qu'un Livre d'Heures "retouche" et transforme en Suisse au XVIe siecle a partir d'une ebauche abandonnee, realisee au nord de la France un siecle plus tot. Leur etudes nous a pose des problemes concernant leur datation, leur attribution et leur localisation, ainsi que la determnation du role que peut jouer un maitre au talent reconnu lors de l'illustration partielle ou totale d'un manuscrit modeste. Cette etude se propose de donner au lecteur la possibilite d'entrevoir quelques aspects de la piete du laic medieval par l'etude iconographique, liturgique et stylistique de ces douze Livres d'Heures realisees en France, dans les Flandres, dans le Rhin superieur ou en Italie, entre la fin du XIVe et le debut du XVe siecle. ‎A prized possession of the Cistercian convent of Marienbrunn in Rulle near Osnabruck in northern Germany was its richly illuminated gradual dating to c. 1300, which is of great significance in the history of medieval art for several reasons. With 52 historiated initials iconographically complex in their literary quotations from the liturgy, the manuscript ranks as one of the most lavishly decorated books of its type to survive. Painted in an elegant courtly Gothic style, it is ascribed in a prefatory inscription to the nun Gisela von Kerssenbrock, who wrote, notated, and decorated the manuscript "with golden letters and beautiful images." Such an encyclopedic listing of a scribe-artist's labors is unparalleled in medieval scribal colophons. The high quality of the miniatures ranks her among the most gifted women artists of the Middle Ages. Gisela is depicted in two self-portraits within the manuscript, in one of which she is leading the nuns of Rulle in singing the Christmas hymn, visual evidence that she was the choirmistress at this convent. The manuscript's images reflect the intellectual ambience of encloistered nuns who were steeped in the annual liturgical cycle of feasts with its associated bible readings, theological commentary, sermons, music, dramatic ritual, and artistic decoration. As it was used in the nuns' daily celebration of the mass, the book is an eloquent witness of the communal religious life of medieval women rather than their private meditations or mystical experiences.This study explores the imagery and texts associated with major feasts of the liturgical year and the novel ways in which music and text are woven into the artistic program of Gisela's manuscript. In particular, her book shows the seminal importance of the Easter celebration for convent life, as well over half of its illustrations are clustered in the Easter season; and the manuscript repeatedly gives artistic expression to the nuns' hopes of heaven. ‎Of all the Old Testament books, the Book of Job remains acutely contemporary today. Written between the 6th and 3rd c. B.C., it deals with subjects such as the presence of evil in the world, the misery, the quest for justice, the faith, and the behavior of people when they face sudden twists and turns of life. It seems that the ancient text had been illustrated since the Early Christian period because of its fascinating novel-like narrative style. In her own study on the Book of Job, Stella Papadaki-Oekland probes into all the Byzantine illuminated manuscripts of the illustrated Greek text. This book proposes a new methodological framework for the study of medieval landscape imagery, by analyzing the functions of landscape imagery within Northern European manuscript illumination. Taking a historicist approach, this study explores landscape imagery within a broad range of specific manuscript contexts, taking into account the ideological and the economic milieus in which they were produced. Organized into three sections, this study will look at how landscape functioned as ornament, didactic tool (space) and political tool (place). The first section looks at the role that landscape imagery had in the hierarchy of book decoration, and how it responded to late medieval mnemonic systems and devotional practices. It also addresses the emergence of landscape as a form of ornamental elaboration, sometimes as a means to appeal to specific aesthetic criteria, or as a way to create extra-textual associations to augment the message of the text. The second section is concerned with landscape within encyclopedic and allegorical manuscripts, and will analyze how artists constructed space to communicate specific lessons or ideas, for example to frame debates about the role of agricultural labor or to present the dynastic ambitions of the Burgundian court. Finally, the third section explores the visualization of the political and economic landscape of late medieval Europe, particularly focusing on how landscape was structured to respond issues of status, power and identity not only in works created for the landed nobility but within manuscripts made for urban patrons as well. Concentrating on manuscripts from Paris, Northern France and Flanders from the late thirteenth to the early sixteenth centuries, this book will offer new insights as it contextualizes the emergence of landscape painting in the late middle ages. ‎These three volumes catalogue the extensive corpus of mycological drawings in the Paper Museum of Cassiano dal Pozzo. Executed mostly in watercolour between 1625 and 1630 and depicting fungi native to Umbria and the environs of Rome, they constitute the first sustained attempt to survey all the larger fungi of a region, recording in detail the stages of their growth. Laden with notes on colour, smell, taste, weight, season and the locality in which the specimens had been found, the almost six hundred folios were commissioned by Federico Cesi (1585-1630), founder of Europe?s first scientific academy, the Accademia dei Lincei. They were acquired by Cassiano dal Pozzo after Cesi?s death and were greatly admired by those who saw them in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Thought to have been lost until their rediscovery in 1979 in the library of the Institut de France in Paris, the drawings are also remarkable for their pioneering use of the microscope, a novel instrument given to Cesi in 1624 by Galileo and used throughout the pages of these manuscripts to enhance the direct observation of nature. Also included are drawings of fungi commissioned by Cassiano and his brother Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo now in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, and an early set of copies of the Cesi originals in the library of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Each drawing is reproduced in colour with accompanying text, and two introductory essays discuss the scientific investigations and collecting activities of Cesi and Cassiano and the importance of these drawings in the history of science and art. ‎This volume gathers together the major essays of the late Frank Ephraim Talmage, who served as professor in the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Toronto until his death in 1988.
