‎In its understated way, this work establishes several theses each one of which, taken separately, could reasonably be considered sensational. First we have the discovery of the autograph of Cassiodorus. In shorthand, as one would expect from a busy man with a strong sense of time management, it testifies that Cassiodorus reviewed (Cassiodorus legi), or verified (perlegi Cassiodorus) a text. The signature occurs in codices that had already, through other considerations, been associated with Vivarium, and becomes in turn a strong criterion for the identification of works not previously associated with the Calabrian foundation. In some manuscripts a hand already known as 'manus prima', can now be identified with those of scribes active at Vivarium. These hands were not simply copying orthodox texts, but critically examining those written by authors of different persuasions: we know now that a codex well-known for its Arian scholia was studied and annotated at Vivarium. Cassiodorus and his team of writers/translators were squirreling away on texts by Church Fathers and heretics, analysing them, taking from them what could be suitable, reading everything. So, Vivarium was a militantly Chalcedonian monastery, but also one where the alternatives, dubbed by modern scholars 'Arian scholia' were duly studied and annotated. These essays by Fabio Troncarelli are an example of 'integral palaeography' in the sense of the definition, by now a classic, of Leonard E. Boyle (Medieval Latin Palaeography, Author's Preface, p. xv). Through the highly specialised technique of demanding discipline, the author succeeds in reconstructing the intellectual climate and the historical setting of Vivarium. Languages : Italian.‎

The book explores the intellectual bonds between those we usually study (e.g. Augustine) and umpteen others whose often anonymous exegeses we tend to ignore - yet it was the cumulative impact of both that created medieval theology. born in 1958 in Ireland, Thomas O'Loughlin is a lecturer in theology in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies in the University of Wales Lampeter. Tornato a Fulda, prima come maestro e poi, a partire dall' 822, nella veste di abate, egli fece dell'abbazia la sede di una delle piu importanti scuole del regno. Ma Rabano non lavoro solo per i suoi monaci. Vero erede dalla tradizione culturale alcuiniana - e interpretato dai suoi stessi contemporanei come tale - egli porto avanti il piano di politica culturale promosso da Carlo. A tal fine realizzo una glossa sistematica alla sacra Scrittura che, concepita come raccolta ordinata delle spiegazioni dei Padri, conobbe uno straordinario successo. Dopo Rabano, per generazioni, studiare il testo sacro significo, sopratutto, leggere, interpretare, rielaborare le raccolte di expositores da lui messe a punto. L'opera esegetica di Rabano Mauro costituisce pertanto un passaggio obbligato non solo per comprendere quello che fu lo studio della Bibbia durante l'alto medioevo, ma anche per farsi un'idea delle letture patristiche alla base della formazione di molti dei maestri che operarono in questi secoli. Tuttavia, sopratutto a ragione del suo carattere compilativo, essa e stata completamente trascurata dalla critica. Il presente lavoro si propone di colmare tale lacuna. Basato su un'indagine sistematica delle fonti, esso tenta una prima lettura complessiva dell'impegno interpretativo dell'abate di Fulda, assegnandogli un preciso posto nella storia dell'esegesi latina. Con i tre volumi dei Hrabani Mauri Opera Exegetica escono per la prima volta su supporto cartaceo alcuni dei risultati rielaborati nel contesto del progetto di ricerca 'La Tradizione dei Padri nell'Europa del Primo Millennio' (TRAPEM). Iniziato verso la meta degli anni '90, TRAPEM consiste nello studio sistematico delle fonti di tutte le opere a soggetto teologico, morale, dottrinale ed esegetico prodotte entro l'arco di tempo compreso tra il sec. VII e la fine del sec. XI. I dati raccolti vengono immagazzinati in un apposito data base, che consente di circoscrivere l'edizione a stampa ai soli apparati delle fonti relativi all'opera di singoli autori (o alla tradizione interpretativa di singoli libri della Scrittura), accompagnati da un ampio ed articolato studio introduttivo. Nella fattispecie i Hrabani Mauri Opera Exegetica comprendono, oltre agli apparatus fontium di tutti i commentari alla Bibbia di Rabano e relativi indici (voll. II e III), uno studio articolato in tre sezioni: 'Rabano esegeta', 'Le fonti', 'I Commentari'. Nella sezione relativa a 'Le fonti' si fornisce un quadro della conoscenza che Rabano aveva degli autori e delle opere che risultano impiegate nei suoi commentari. Le Pere Mueller essaie surtout de degager la maniere dont le redacteur des Constitutions apostoliques adapta des procedes traditionnels de l?exegese de l?Ancien Testament pour representer les contours et le fondement d?institutions ecclesiales qui eurent bien evolue entre l?epoque ou ses sources furent redigees et celle ou il vivait. Dans cette optique, la presente etude examine de pres la doctrine des Constitutions apostoliques sur le presbyterat et les institutions penitentielles, et elle dessine la notion de la fondation divine des institutions ecclesiales a l??uvre dans ce recueil. ‎From the Treasure-House of Scripture presents the first comprehensive assessment of the relation between the Latin Bible and the text of the highly influential late-medieval devotional manual known as De Imitatione Christi (The Imitation of Christ). Consisting of a detailed analysis of scriptural sources in The Imitation, this work contains the complete Latin text of The Imitation juxtaposed against 3815 Vulgate source texts. Included are some 2600 sources collated from citations in seventy editions of The Imitation, and some 1200 sources newly identified in this study. A collation is presented of explicit statements in The Imitation on ?Scripture? and aspects of lectio divina (?prayed reading?). The textual analysis highlights several aspects of the relation between The Imitation and the Vulgate. First, some fifty ?forms of usage? of scriptural passages in The Imitation are described. Secondly, some three hundred scriptural passages important in informing the overall content of The Imitation are identified. Thirdly, the role of scriptural sources in helping to shape the ascetic character of The Imitation is discussed. Background information is presented on the content, authorship and influence of The Imitation; the Devotio moderna (?New Devotion? or ?Modern Devotion?) movement; the life of Thomas a Kempis; the role of Scripture and lectio divina in the New Devotion movement; and the general role of Scripture in Thomas a Kempis?s oeuvre. Le premier (Lectio philosophorum, Amsterdam, 1973) etait centre sur l'Ecole de Chartres, le second (Etudes erigeniennes, Paris, 1987; Prix Victor Cousin, 1990) sur Jean Scot Erigene. Ce troisieme recueil combine les deux themes. Les travaux qui y sont rassembles, et qui couvrent plus de vingt annees de recherches, portent non seulement sur Jean Scot et sur les maitres chartrains, mais sur leurs sources bibliques, patristiques et profanes. Parmi les sources patristiques, une place de choix est faite aux Peres grecs: Denys l'Areopagite, Gregoire de Nysse, Maxime le Confesseur. ‎This volume brings together the contributions delivered at the International Seminar held in Palermo and Castelvetrano?Selinunte in Sicily on 17-19 November 2005. The Seminar was organized by the Officina di Studi Medievali in collaboration with the Dipartimento di Civilta Euro-Mediterranee, the Dipartimento di Studi Storici e Artistici and the Dipartimento di Beni Culturali at the Facolta di Lettere e Filosofia at the University of Palermo, under the patronage of the Region of Sicily and the Italian Ministero per i Beni e le Attivita Culturali. The contributions address four different themes: 1. Ramon Lull in Sicily at the time of Frederick III; 2. the Opera tuniciana et messanensia of Ramon Lull; 3. Sicily, the Mediterranean and Frederick III; 4. the Ars amativa boni by Ramon Lull. All the contributions ? written in English, French, Italian and Spanish ? are provided with an abstract in English. The Seminar was organized in honour of Fernando Dominguez Reboiras who for many years has been the scientific co-ordinator and unceasing promoter of the critical edition of the Latin works of Ramon Lull (ROL) in the Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaevalis series. Reparties entre histoire des bibliotheques et histoire des textes, hagiographie, homiletique et liturgie, lexicographie, grammaire et stylistique, les trois sections de ce livre restituent une partie de l'enseignement recu. Francois Dolbeau a pris sa retraite de Directeur d'Etudes a l'EPHE en 2008. Ses eleves et les auditeurs de ses conferences ont souhaite le remercier par un livre d'hommages. Celebrant non pas un collegue mais un maitre, ces Parva munera attestent l'impulsion que Francois Dolbeau a donnee aux etudes mediolatines dans le cadre de son enseignement. ‎The Sermones ad populum are a part of Augustine's work that, especially in its relation to the rest of the Augustinian corpus, deserves more attention. Frequently studied topics are the transmission of the sermons, the bishop's homiletic methodology, his use of Scripture and classical rhetoric, his view on the episcopate, his theology of proclamation and his opinions about the cult of the martyrs. Augustine's sermons also serve as an invaluable source for the study of the North African Church and its liturgical practices at the end of the fourth and the beginning of the fifth century. The dating and the chronology of the sermons have likewise been the object of many publications. As a matter of fact, they are still much debated. On May 29-31, 2008, the research units History of Church and Theology and Literary Studies: Latin Literature of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven organized an international conference on Augustine's Sermones ad populum in collaboration with the Scientific Committee of the Series Latina of Corpus Christianorum (Brepols Publishers), the Revue benedictine (Maredsous) and the Augustinian Historical Institute (Heverlee). The conference was intended to bring together scholars who have recently made important contributions to the study of Augustine's work in general and his preaching in particular, as well as specialists in the field of Early Christian homiletics. This is how Wilhelm Geerlings describes the significance of Augustine in his pithy and short book on the theologian. Just as Whitehead?s statement was not meant to diminish the achievement of later philosophers, but rather aimed at underlining the fundamental significance of Plato, Geerlings did not intend to minimize the significance of post-Augustinian theology. Likewise, the title given to the collection of the most important articles of Wilhelm Geerlings (1941-2008), Footnotes to Augustine, is not meant to lessen the author?s contribution. It rather highlights the crucial significance of Augustine for the thought and scholarship of the theologian and historian Wilhelm Geerlings. To the general public, he is mainly known as the founder and editor of the Fontes Christiani, a series of new bilingual editions of ancient and medieval Christian sources, which, by the time of his death, comprised one hundred volumes.
