Paper with watermark (scales with letter "A" above: not recorded by Briquet thus, while the letter "A" is listed (no. 7919) and confirmed for Venice, 1503.

Die Namen sind großteils ungarisch, ebenso genannte Städte und sonstige Ortschaften. Instruktive Darstellung der Funktionsweise eines Chromometers, die wohl für einen Lexikonartikel oder als Aufsatz für eine technische Zeitschrift gedacht war: "Chromometer, Chromoskop oder Wärmemesser wird ein Instrument genannt, welches die Änderungen in der Wärme oder Temperatur der Luft oder eines andern Fluidums, dem es ausgesetzt, wird, genau anzeigt. Diese Kenntnis der abweichenden Temperatur ist bey mehreren ökonomischen Geschäften höchst wichtig; sie kann auch in einer regelmäßigen Bleich- und Färbeanstalt, wo man nicht auf[s] geradewohl operirt, und immer gleiche Resultate verlangt, nicht enbehrt werden; aber nur durch jenes Instrument wird sie möglich. So wie die Aräometer, so sind auch die Thermometer nach der Eintheilung ihrer Skalen verschieden. Äußerst aufwendig gestaltete, ausführliche Chronik der 1896 gestifteten "Ritterschaft Kepleriania" - so die launige Selbstbezeichnung des Lehrkörpers der Wiener Knabenvolksschule in der Favoritener Keplergasse 11, wo der Verfasser unter den Pseudonymen "Wolfram von Hirschensprung" bzw., im Amte des "Chronisten und Geheimschreibers", "Magister Weishar" von spätestens 1880 bis zu seinem Ausscheiden im Jahr 1906 als Erzieher wirkte. - Die wehmütig rückblickende Chronik wurde vom 1917 bereits pensionierten Volksschullehrer Hirsch mit großer Liebe zum historistischen Detail ausgeführt. Die blattgroßen Illustrationen zeigen Ansichten mehrerer beliebter Ausflugsziele um Wien, die bei den damaligen "Heerfahrten" heimgesucht wurden, darunter die Burgen Greifenstein, Liechtenstein, Kreuzenstein und Kammerstein sowie Ortsansichten von Altenberg und Pötzleinsdorf. Die übrigen Zeichnungen nehmen Alltagsszenen und Begebenheiten von Mitgliedern der "Ritterschaft" aufs Korn. Beim Buchschmuck nahm sich der Autor manche Anregung bei den Illustratoren der Wiener Secession zum Vorbild: So ziert etwa der Ritter, den Carl Otto Czeschka für die 1000-Jahr-Feier Mödlings 1908 als Plakatmotiv wählte, die Einleitung des vorliegenden Manuskripts. Die verspielten Pseudonyme der "Ritter" werden mit den entsprechenden wirklichen Namen der Volksschulpädagogen aufgelöst. - Oberes Kapital minimal eingerissen, Ecken gering bestoßen, sonst ausgezeichnet erhalten.

Contemporary vellum binding with attractive giltstamped tendril border, fleuronnée corner stamps, gilt spine and two different giltstamped heraldic supralibros on the covers. All edges gilt. Inner margin shows two holes drilled through covers and interior for a decorative cord with the seal (now lost). Remains of ties. A collection of copies of Habsburgian documents relating to the Gonzaga family and the War of the Mantuan Succession, compiled by the Imperial Registry and signed by the Emperor, Ferdinand III. The ensemble, which comprises documents by Frederick III, Maximilian I, Charles V, Maximilian II, Rudolf II, Matthias, Ferdinand II, etc., was probably drawn up for Duke Ferrante III Gonzaga, Duke of Guastalla (1618-78), to record and secure his claims upon the Duchy of Mantua (claims which lay in the interest of the Imperial family), whereas the War of Succession had ended a few years previously with Mantua becoming part of the French sphere of influence. - The Gonzaga family had ruled Mantua since 1328; in 1530, Federico II Gonzaga assumed the title of a Duke of Mantua. Upon gaining control over the counties of Monferrato and Guastalla in the mid-16th century, the family reached their apogee of political, financial, and cultural importance. When Francesco IV Gonzaga died in 1612 without leaving a male successor, he was succeeded by his brothers Ferdinando and Vincenzo, both cardinals without children. Upon the death of Vincenzo II Gonzaga in 1627 the direct male line of the House of Gonzaga became extinct, causing a war of succession. Emperor Ferdinand II, husband of Eleanor Gonzaga, Vincenzo's sister, sought to re-attach the Duchy of Mantua to the Holy Roman Empire by transferring it to the Spanish-Imperial line of Gonzaga-Guastalla. This objective was opposed by the older line of Gonzaga of Nevers and Rethel, supported by France. The conflict ended when Sweden entered the Thirty Years' War and Ferdinand required his troops in the principal theatre of combat. The Duke of Nevers and Rethel became lord of the devastated and depopulated counties of Mantua and Monferrato, and France gained a foothold in Upper Italy. (Three quarters of a century later, however, the Imperial cause was to triumph after all: in 1708, the War of Spanish Succession re-attached Mantua to the Empire, while the Duke of Mantua and Monferrato sided with France.) - The present compilation is intended to document the legal succession of the House of Gonzaga-Guastalla on the basis of archival sources; this goal is underscored by the Imperial arms on the upper cover (double-headed eagle with quartered escutcheon showing the fesses of Gonzaga and the Bohemian lion, bordered by a tendril desgin enclosing the four evangelists) and Guastalla's lion rampant within a crowned shield on the back cover. The documents repeatedly invoke the feudal righty of the House of Gonzaga-Guastalla, especially in the areas of Castiglione delle Stiviere and Castel Goffredo: "Ad perpetuam rei memoriam recognoscimus, ac postum facimus tenore praesentium universis, quod cum nobis submissime exponendum curavit. Elegantly disposed manuscript list of the so-called imperial quaternions (from Latin: quaternio, "group of four soldiers"), the conventional representation of the Imperial States of the Holy Roman Empire that was established in the 15th century. The list in groups of four largely follows the usual descending order of precedence, the exception being the Noblemen (here: "Baroni") who moved up the list: Dukes, Margraves, Landgraves, Burggraves, Noblemen, Counts, Knights, Cities, Villages, and Peasants. Added in a different hand are the "four Vicars" and the "four [Castles]", as well as seemingly random numbers to the quaternions listed above. These additions correspond to the representation of the Imperial States on the Quaternion Eagle, the informal coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire that has been introduced around 1510 by Hans Burgkmair. Here, the coats of the quaternions, with the exception of the highest tiers (emperor, kings, prince-bishops, and prince electors), are grouped vertically on the twelve feathers of the Eagle, adding up to a total of 48 States: 1 Peasants, 2 Cities, 3 Noblemen, 4 Burggraves, 5 Margraves, 6 Dukes, 7 Vicars, 8 Landgaves, 9 Counts, 10 Knights, 11 Villages, and 12 Castles. - With minimal tears. Er setzte seine Studien in Utrecht, Leiden, Franeker und Harderwijk fort; nach seiner Rückkehr bekleidete er eine Pfarrstelle in Eschenbach, bevor er 1716 Diakon zu St. Lorenz wurde (vgl. Jöcher/Adelung I, 415). Das am Schluß des Genethliacons in Aussicht genommene Jahr 1739, Imhofs 80. Geburtstag ("Deo volente, celebranda"), sollten Gratulant und Geehrter beide nicht mehr erleben: Imhof verstarb schon in Folgejahr; Alberti nur zwei Jahre hernach. - Deckel gering fleckig; insgesamt sauber und wohlerhalten.

Insgesamt sehr schön erhalten.

Deutsche Kalligraphie (Normschrift) auf Papier, teils mit Überklebungen und Korrekturen in Bleistift. 47 unnumerierte Blätter mit 29 ganzseitigen, bildmäßig ausgeführten Aquarellen auf zwischengebundenen Kartontafeln. Halbleinenband mit aufkaschierten Deckelillustrationen, am hinteren Deckel signiert. Im Originalschuber mit gemaltem Deckelschildchen. 8vo (150 x 218 mm). Hochinteressante satirische Dialektdichtung in Versen über den Wiener Kunstbetrieb der Nachkriegszeit. In Wort und Bild ausführlich portraitiert werden u. a. Leherb, Friedensreich Hundertwasser und Arnulf Rainer. Auf letzteren, der seine frühen Arbeiten mit dem Pseudonym "TRR" signierte, beziehen sich die Verse: "[...] Weil aner då net mittuan kånn / Målt er sein Gsicht statt d Leinwånd ån; / So will er d åndern unterkriagn / Do si dabei net strapeziern! / Wia ers erreicht, dabei si s richt, verråt a kurze Lebensgschicht: / Drei Wochen und drei Stund wårn um, / Håt er si druckt vom Studium. / Drauf wår d Hundsgruppe s Wirkungsfeld / Wo er mit 'Trrrr' de Kunst verbellt. / Durchs Kunstleben is er grennt ganz wild, / Håt an Radaubruader stets gspielt, / In Wolfsberg anmål ungeniert / A fremdes Bild schwarz überschmiert [...]". - Die hervorragende Qualität der Illustrationen, aber auch die zu teils sehr emotionaler Kritik an den jeweils behandelten Personen herangezogenen Interna lassen darauf schließen, dass es sich beim Urheber um einen konservativen Angehörigen der Wiener Akademie gehandelt haben könnte. Die letzten Zeilen des Werks sind wohl eher nicht als Hinweis darauf zu lesen, dass dieser als Gaststudent in Wien weilte: "A jeder wåschechte aus Wien / Håt wås vom liaben Augustin / [...] Kan Sinn für Ghäßigkeit und Neid / A guates Herz für brave Leut. / [...] Nur etwås kann eahms kräftig stiern; / Wann Zuagraste wås ausstallieren [...]". Der deutsche Künstler Matthias Koeppel (geb. 1937), der in den 1960er Jahren in Wien studierte und zuletzt mit dem Triptychon "Die Öffnung der Berliner Mauer" zur Ausstattung des Berliner Abgeordnetenhauses beitrug, bestreitet jedenfalls die Urheberschaft des vorliegenden Bandes ("Da die Zeichnungen eine gute Qualität haben, müßte ich mich allerdings nicht schämen, wenn Sie von mir wären. Ich schätze, daß der Maler älter ist als ich [...] Seine stilistische Festlegung müßte er schon in den 30er Jahren erfahren haben [...]", aus dem beiliegenden Schreiben v. 10. XII. 1999). - Bemerkenswertes unveröffentlichtes Zeitdokument mit beeindruckend qualitätvollen, zeitgenössischen Portraits bzw. Karikaturen der Kunstschaffenden im Wien der Nachkriegszeit.

Äußerst umfangreicher (878 Einträge) u. durch seine detaillierten Beschreibungen interessanter Landkarten-Katalog aus dem Hause Bourbon-Parma. Die meisten Karten datieren aus der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts bzw. dem beginnenden 19., wenige aus der zweiten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts. - Das auf starkem bläulichem Papier verfaßte Manuskript beginnt mit einem Bl. [Renaissance mercenaries].
Dedication manuscript for Emperor Ferdinand I, written by the provost of a Landsknecht army who fought against the Turkish troops of Sultan Soliman II between 1532 and 1552. [No place, 1560].
Folio (280 x 390 mm). German ms. on paper. German chancery cursive in brown ink with calligraphic chapter headings and initials. 28 lines, written space ruled in ink. 12 ff., 1 blank f., 83 ff., 2 blank ff. (thus complete with 190 written pages). Contemporary limp vellum with giltstamped cover borders and diagonal cross using the same roll-tools. Spine divided into six compartments by same tools and decorated with floral stamps. All edges goffered. The as yet unidentified writer of this manuscript had until 1552 served among the staff of Maurice, Elector of Saxony, and thus was one of the commanders in the Imperial Landsknecht army led by the Elector. Holding the rank of an "oberster provossen Leutnant" (head lieutenant provost), his duty had been to enforce military order among the mercenary regiment: he investigated and arrested lawbreakers; in trials he acted as prosecutor, and afterwards he executed the punishment. After the end of the campaign, the provost would no longer be protected by military law, for which reason he would usually leave the regiment early so as to escape acts of revenge by the soldiers. After more than 20 years of Imperial army service, our provost was thus without occupation or pay, and so in 1560 directly applied to the Emperor in the present, strongly autobiographical manuscript, requesting (in the 146th and final chapter) that he graciously bestow on him a benefice or sinecure ("aus lauterer genaden mit ainer genetten Pfründt oder schlechten Ofidicio oder Beneficij"). Obviously aware of the difficulties of his appeal, the author states in the preface that even if granted a personal hearing, he would hardly be permitted to present his case in such detail ("gibt ainem nit sovil audienz, biß Er sein wichtige sachen khann genuegsamblich fürbringe"), which is why he has decided on the written form. He is not a learned man, nor does he have an eloquent scholar ("ain doctor der wolreden khann") at his disposal to help him with his phrasing, but even a simple man has memory and brains enough to thus lay down his opinions. His extensive descriptions of personal involvement in important, historically documented battles against the Turks permit a precise dating of the manuscript. The writer participated in the campaign against the Raab fortress ("ungeverlich vor 8 Jahren mein gnediger Herr Herzog Moritz Curfürst [...] biß für Rab Innß Landt zue Hungern ist gezogen") and fought against the Turks at Steinfeld as early as 1532 ("bin auch dabey gewesen, wie man dazumal ein streifenden Haufen mit Türggen an der Schwarzach geschlagen hat [...] da Herr Sewastian Schertlin Obristen Leitnanbt war"). This Imperial mercenary probably remained in the regiment of the famous Landsknecht commander Sebastian Schertlin von Burtenbach (1496-1577), victor of the battle at Steinfeld and a participant in the 1527 Sack of Rome, until the mid-1540s. He also remarks on the desolate condition of the contemporary military, straightforwardly addressing the issues of corruption among the upper echelons ("wie die falschen blinden Namen C. The index is immediately followed by the preface to the Emperor, the "Allerdurchleuchtigste Großmechtigste unnd unyberwindlichsste Erwelte Romischer Kayser aller genedigster Herr", which in turn is followed by the 146 chapters of the petition. Enthält eine längere Erzählung im Stile der damals populären Ritterromane ("Otto oder die Todtenglocke um Mitternacht"), ein orientalisches Singspiel ("Parthena - Große Oper in zwei Aufzügen", mit Kostümillustrationen von Arabern) sowie als dritten Teil Lyrik, Rätselverse, verschlüsselte Liebesbriefe u. a. Laut Titel widmete der Verfasser das Buch nach dem Italienfeldzug von 1848/49 seinem Regimentskommandanten, dem Generalmajor Gustav Graf Degenfeld-Schonburg (1807-57). - Das Widmungsblatt etwas braunfleckig, sonst wohlerhalten und sauber. Gelenke fachmännisch restauriert.
