KLEISS (Hans)
L’AVOCAT ET L’INNOCENT, Grande caricature originale signée
bon état de fraîcheur, cadre H.S. Hans Kleiss (1901 1973), peintre et caricaturiste orientaliste, fut l’époux d’Yvonne Kleiss-Herzig, autre peintre orientaliste célèbre. Autrichien, il avait quitté son pays natal, traversé la France, puis l’Espagne, et s’était installé en Afrique du Nord où il s’était installé en 1952 à Sidi Slimane, « Le Petit Paris » marocain avant de revenir en France à la fin des années 50. Il y vivait de son pinceau et, surtout, de ses caricatures qu’il vendait à ses modèles, ou qui étaient publiées dans la presse locale. Ensuite, des années 60 et jusqu’à sa mort, Hans Kleiss vendait ses œuvres (objets en fer ou bois) à La Bergerie à Vallauris. Il pratiquait à merveille la linogravure (gravure sur linoléum).

- Paris 4 mars 1991, 21x29,7cm, une feuille. - Handwritten letter signed by the writer Pierre Klossowski addressed to Maurice Béjart, dated 4 March 1991. 29 lines written in black ink on one leaf. Just like a poem, this beautiful and passionate letter was written in a long column of text. Klossowski congratulates the choreographer on his autobiography Mort subite published the same year and is amazed that Béjart's literary tastes are so similar to his own. In the letter, Pierre Klossowski highlights the affinities that link him to Béjart. He devotes a long passage to Mort subite, Béjart's last book about his famous father, the philosopher Gaston Berger: "La miraculeuse Anwesenheit [présence] d'un tel père suscitée par un tel fils ! A vous lire, je ressens cette célébration dans sa piété filiale toute de joyeuse certitude, à la cadence goethéenne du Roi des Aulnes [...]" "The miraculous Anwesenheit [presence] of such a father sparked off by such a son! To read you, I feel this celebration in his filial piety, all of joyful certainty, to the same rhythm as Goethe's The Erlking [...]" He brings up their shared passion for the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, before mentioning an old collaborative project: "Je n'oublie guère votre visite [...] ni votre idée d'un ballet autour d'un Baphomet invisible..." "I hardly forget your visit [...] nor your idea of a ballet based on Baphomet invisible...." Several years earlier, the Baphomet had already been the object of an abandoned theatre project with the Biennale de Venise. The letter finishes with an allusion to Klossowski's "travail pictural exclusif" "exclusive pictorial work": his huge production of drawings that kept him busy until the end of his life. Interesting letter regarding choreographer Maurice Béjart's project to adapt Klossowski's Baphomet into a ballet. Klossowski had met Maurice Béjart through a mutual friend, the writer and film maker François Weyergans. The idea of a ballet based on Klossowski's book Le Baphomet was born out of this meeting. This medieval baroque tale, published four years earlier, recounted the mystical vicissitudes and the religious divides of the Templar. The writer, obsessed by the project, confided his doubts about such an undertaking, which seemed impossible to achieve due to the many pitfalls: "Plus je m'évertue à esquisser quelques ébauches de synopsis, et plus sûrement je m'égare [...] je n'arrive pas à sortir d'une visualisation théâtrale" "The more I strive to sketch out the draft of the synopsis, the more I lose my way [...] I am not able to escape a theatrical visualisation." There are fascinating passages questioning the relative permeability between the literary text and the ballet scene: "Il me semble maintenant que c'est non point le tableau mais la trame verbale - le mouvement de la parole et ses développements qui offriraient les éléments des figures que seul votre génie puisse réinventer à sa guise !" "It now seems to me that it is not the visual picture but the verbal thread - the movement of the words and their developments that would present the characteristics of the characters that only your expertise can reinvent as you please!" At the end of the letter he writes a list of the three scenes to adapt and shares an idea for a very original production: "(J'avais imaginé que l'on assisterait à l'animation de la statue de Ste Thérèse du Bernin - le page simulant la statue - donc jouant la moniale pour figurer le Baphomet - mais voilà encore du « théâtre »)" "(I had imagined that we would see the animation of the Ste Thérèse du Bernin statue - the page resembling the statue - therefore casting the nun to represent Baphomet - well, even more "theatre")". Despite Klossowski's efforts, the collaboration project with Béjart never happened. Nevertheless, the two artists remained close, and their correspondence, of which we still found examples dated 1991, testifies to their longstanding friendship. 8vo (100 x 150 mm). 187 written pages on 175 unnumbered ff. (numerous otherwise blank pages ruled in red ink). German and occasional Latin manuscript on paper by at least three different hands in brown and red ink, written in a regular cursive hand. With gilt calligraphic frontispiece in micrography, 2 full-page portraits and 1 coat of arms, all in watercolour and gilt. Contemporary blindstamped calf, edges goffered and gilt, upper cover stamped "Adam Eckhart". Wants ties. Charmingly illustrated medical manuscript by several hands, all belonging to the late 16th or the earliest decades of the 17th century. The first part of the manuscript is a compendium of surgeon's recipes, mainly comprising ointments, powders, and bandages against stabbings and other bleeding wounds, as well as preparations against cramps and other conditions. The arrangement into several segments, each followed by a few blank pages, as well as a few scribal lapses suggest that this part was copied from an earlier manual and was intended to be expanded. The anonymous author of this compilation, possibly written as early as the late 16th century, makes no secret of his admiration for Paracelsus, to whom he dedicates a coloured double-page illustration showing the portrait, arms, and coffin of the great physician and alchemist. - This is followed by an extensive section captioned "Der barmhertzige Samariter" ("The Good Samaritan", fol. 55 ff.), signed at the beginning and end by Stephan Knauff - very likely the barber surgeon of this name based in Vianden near Trier, mentioned in 1634 in the miracle books of the Eberhardsklausen monastery (cf. P. Hoffmann, Publikationen der Gesellschaft für Rheinische Geschichtskunde, vol. 64, no. 824). - A full-page illustration at the end of the volume shows a priest with a cross and a Vanitas skull - apparently a self-portrait by Johann Martin Hecker, a native of Baden who served as chaplain in Fraulautern in the Sarre region. In a two-page postscript dated 29 December 1619 he dedicates the volume to his "good friend" Adam, very probably the Adam Eckhardt whose ownership is stamped to the upper cover. It may also have been the theologian Hecker who prefixed the volume with the highly decorative frontispiece: a single leaf from a slightly earlier catechetic manuscript, trimmed and pasted on fol. 3 ("Die sechs Hauptstuck christlicher Lehre, in unten verfassete stuck geschrieben, durch Martinum Dornbergern", dated 1608). The masterly calligram in micrography shows the Ten Commandments, Lord's Prayer, Apostles' Creed, etc. in the shape of a chalice, Eucharistic wafer, and Tablets of Law. The calligrapher Martin Dornberger is mentioned in the 1580 Book of Concord as a Lutheran verger in Hilpoltstein (Franconia). - Binding a little rubbed and warped, spine and hinges rubbed, upper spine-end a little chipped. Interior somewhat browned and stained with occasional light waterstains; several paper flaws to lower corners without loss to text. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript autograph handwritten document sealed 'Hüsrev Mehmed' sent to (and responded by) Serkâtib Mustafa. Written in special paper with 'ahar'. 39x21 cm. In Ottoman script. Slightly tear on folded place and slightly stains. Otherwise a very good manuscript paper. The document was written in accordance with the Ottoman state correspondence tradition prior to modernization. However, it is an indication of modernization that it is written to the serkâtib of Humâyûn (head clerk of the Ottoman / Turkish court) and not to the Sultan directly. The importance of this document is that it has many hints of modernization movements of the last period of Empire, depiction of the division of the first modern Ottoman army (Asakir-i Mansure-i Muhammediye) that's before one year of Egyptian Campaign by Koca Husrev Pasha and before eight years of proclamation of Reform (Tanzimat) and after only 22 years of Turkish Magna Carta (Sened-i Ittifak). Husrev Pasha was 'serasker' (commandant and head) of Assakir-i Mansure-i Muhammediye Army in that year. Husrev's text starts as 'Devletlü, inayetlü, atufetlü, oglum.." in 'Elqab'. In the Ottoman diplomacy, first person who used 'oglum' [i.e. my son] in elqab of the documents was Koca Hüsrev Pasha. (Source: Osmanli Arsiv Belgeleri, Orhan Sakin). Koca Hüsrev Pasha (Khosrew Pasha) was an Ottoman Kapudan Pasha ("Grand Admiral") of the Ottoman Navy and statesman who reached the position of Grand Vizier rather late in his career, between 2 July 1839 and 8 June 1840 in the reign of Abdülmecid I. However, during the 1820s, he occupied key administrative roles in the fight against regional warlords, the reformation of the army, and the reformation of Turkish attire. In 1801, Hüsrev Pasha commanded the 6,000 Ottoman troops who assisted the British in removing the French from Rashid (Rosetta). For this, he was made governor of Egypt Eyalet (province), in which position he was charged with assisting Hüseyin Pasha in the killing or imprisoning the surviving leaders of the Mamluks. Many of these were freed by or fled with the British, while others held Minia between Upper and Lower Egypt. [.] He was later made governor again by Muhammad Ali for 2 days [.] After Diyarbekir and Salonica, in 1806 he was governor of Bosnia Eyalet, before being reappointed as governor of Salonica in 1808. Hüsrev Pasha held the rank of Kapudan Pasha of the Ottoman Navy from 1811 to 1818. He was then appointed governor of the Eyalet of Trabzon twice, during which time he conducted for the Black Sea region of Turkey the struggle the central Ottoman state was waging against local feudal rulers (Derebeys). During the Greek War of Independence, he was appointed Kapudan Pasha again in the end of 1822. In 1826, Husrev Pasha played vital roles both in the Auspicious Incident (the annihilation of the Janissary Corps in 1826) and in the formation of the new "Mansure Army" modeled after those of European Powers. Appointed as seraskier (commander the army) of the Mansure in May 1827, Husrev reformed and disciplined the corps. Himself ignorant of modern military methods, he assembled a staff of foreign experts and other personnel to assist him, the "Seraskeriye", which constituted the first staff in Ottoman history. Due to his early championing of military reform and virtual control over the new Ottoman army, Husrev was able to install many of his protégés in senior military positions. Husrev Pasha was also instrumental for the near-abandonment of the turban and the adoption of the fez as a universal headgear for Muslim men of the Ottoman Empire (excluding the religious classes) under Sultan Mahmud II. (Wikipedia). Möltke talks about him in famous book includes his personal letters as 'he is more powerful than sultan'. Following the suppression of the Janissaries in 1826, Sultan Mahmud II transferred the functions of the old Agha of the Janissaries to the seraskier.
