MCMAHON Faith : Children's Illustration : Manuscripts
TOMMY AND THE MAN IN BLUE Cover Title - Original Illustrated Children's Book Manuscript
Cuyahoga Falls Ohio ca. 1960. Wraps. Very good. 4to. Approximately 12" x 9." Card panel boards front with silhoutte illustration of a policeman with ink titles and decorated by a silver six-pointed star decal rear with plain blue construction paper adhered to exterior. Title leaf and conclusory "The end" leaves along with 6 leaves 12pp. of manuscript text in large print black ink holograph text to rectos and versos interleaved with 4 original full page ink and watercolor illustrations. Contents bound via two hinged-metal rings through punch holes at left margin. Some toning mild discolor and a bit of tape residue to front title collage. Binding holes worn throughout contents. Illustrated and manuscript leaves about fine. <br/><br/>A captivating vernacular production: an original illustrated children's book manuscript telling the tale of young Tommy his rogue adventure from a serene suburban backyard to the shores of an abandoned quarry and his overcoming a fear of the police. The tale opens with his Mother lobbing the threat of imprisonment for a rather trivial bit of sandbox teasing of his Sister: "Tommy if you don't stop teasing your sister a policeman will come and take you to prison" said mother. Mother had said this many times. In fact Tommy hoped that he would never see a policeman." The sandbox soon grows tiresome to Tommy and he proceeds to wander about in search of more and better sand until he is discovered by a policeman who assuages his phobias concerning law enforcement and whisks him back to home atop his shoulders an idyllic scene executed in a classic mid-20th Century childrens style in the work's final illustration. The book is authored by a Faith McMahon later Hansen born 1933 a lifelong resident of Cuyahoga Falls Ohio. Her 2017 obituary states she ". taught reading in both public and private schools for many years" after her 1963 graduation from Kent State University. It goes on to mention her deep affinity for children's literature specifically the McGuffey's Readers series and that she loved to read to her nieces and nephews from The Boxcar Children or Nancy Drew mystery stories. While TOMMY remains in very good condition the wear the book does show suggests it too was read and shared with at least some frequency. In addition prominent publisher Saalfield was based in nearby Akron raising the possibility the book may have been crafted for publication consideration or at least influenced by the firms ubiquitous illustrated books popular throughout the 20th Century. The illustrations are each initialed in a stylized illegible to us anyway signature. F.P.G or T.P.G seems the most likely spelling though we are unable to state even this much with a ton of confidence nor locate any possible candidates for credit. It does however seem clear the illustrator is someone other than McMahon. We find no evidence of publication of this nor of further works by the author. An admirable and previously unheralded Ohioan work of mid-20th Century original children's literature and illustration. paperback

MEERMAN (Gerard and Johann)
Bibliotheca Meermanniana; sive Catalogus Librorum Impressorum et Codicum Manuscriptorum, quos Maximam Partem Collegegerunt viri Gerardus et Johannes Meerman...
4 volumes bound in 2 (230 x 140 mm), [20], 378; [2], 210; [8], 217, [1]; 221, [1]; [2], 182, [2]pp., a couple of cont. stamps, recent half morocco, red spine labels. The celebrated Meerman Library, although rich in important printed books, is chiefly remembered as the greatest manuscript sale of the 19th century. The Meerman sale marked some of Sir Thomas Phillipps' earliest purchases. In all, he acquired no less than three-quarters of the manuscripts in this famous collection; Munby notes "the indiscriminate fury with which he beat down opposition" at the sale. In 1887, after Phillipps' death, the Meerman MSS. went to the Royal Library, Berlin. One of the outstanding catalogues of the 19th century, it lists ca. 10,000 printed books and 1,100 MSS.

MEHMED MESIH [AKYIGIT], (Turkish poet, the founder of 'Millî Mecmua'), (1864-1939).
Autograph letter signed 'Mehmed Mesih'.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph letter signed by Mehmed Mesih Akyigit. 23x14,5 cm. In Ottoman script. Includes twelve lines. 1 p. Sent to an unnamed lady. Mehmed Mesih was an Ottoman / Turkish poet, the founder of 'Millî Mecmua! [i.e. National Journal]. Millî Mecmua was started to be published by Mehmed Mesih (Akyigit) in Istanbul (1 Tesrînisâni 1339/1 November 1923) immediately after the declaration of the Republic. The journal, which takes the republic and modernization as its principle, coincided with a period in which important reforms were carried out, and parallel to the developments experienced, its attitude has reached a point where reforms are defended separately from a general-framed adoption. They supported the Letter Revolution, except for Mehmed Fuad's article, which drew attention to the negative consequences of the Letter Revolution in 1928. The magazine conducted a survey on "Islam in the Face of the Turkish Revolution", and Ismail Hakki (Baltacioglu), in his response to this questionnaire, suggested a reform in religion and made some proposals such as reading the call to prayer (Ezân) in Turkish and raising the places of prostration in mosques. The editorials of the journal were originally written by Yahya Saim and Hasan Âli (Yücel), and then regularly by Mehmed Mesih. In the magazine, there are some articles such as "Translation Period" by Hüseyin Namik, who deals with the translation issue, as well as translations of the works of writers and poets such as Anatole France and Nietzche.

MEHMED SAID PASHA, (Mabeyn baskatibi, also known as 'Küçük Said Pasha' [i.e. Said Pasha the Younger] or 'Sapur Çelebi', Ottoman monarchist, senator, statesman and editor of the Turkish newspaper Jerid-i-Havadis), (1830-1914).
[OTTOMAN CHIEF of the COUNCIL of the STATE] Autograph document sealed 'Sura-yi Devlet reisi Mehmed Said'.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript autograph document signed by Mehmed Said Pasha sent to Trabzon Vilayat, Ordu Kaza, Hasbamane Nahiya local manager, faziletlu 'Mehmed Ali Sevki Beyefendi'. 33,5x20 cm. Folded. 1 p. In Ottoman script. Mehmed Said Pasha was an Ottoman monarchist, senator, statesman and editor of the Turkish newspaper Jerid-i-Havadis. He supported the CUP, the political party which came to power after the Ottoman coup d'état of 1913. His origin comes from 'Sebazâde family' from Ankara. He became first secretary to Sultan Abdul Hamid II shortly after the Sultan's accession, and is said to have contributed to the realizations of his majesty's design of concentrating power in his own hands; later he became successively minister of the interior and then governor of Bursa, reaching the high post of grand vizier in 1879. He was grand vizier seven more times under Abdul Hamid II, and once under his successor, Mehmed V. He was known for his opposition to the extension of foreign influence in Turkey. n 1896, he took refuge at the British embassy in Constantinople, and, though then assured of his personal liberty and safety, remained practically a prisoner in his own house. He came into temporary prominence again during the revolution of 1908. On 22 July he succeeded Mehmed Ferid Pasha as grand vizier, but on the 6 August was replaced by the more liberal Kâmil Pasha, at the insistence of the Young Turks. Also during 1908, Mehmed Said Pasha bought the famed Istanbul arcade in the Beyoglu (Pera) district, today known as Çiçek Pasaji ("Flower Passage"). The modern name became common in the 1940s; during Mehmed Said Pasha's ownership in the 1900s and 1910s, the arcade was known as Sait Pasa Pasaji ("Said Pasha Passage"). During the Italian crisis in 1911-12, he was again called to the premiership. He was again removed from power by the Savior Officers (who backed the Freedom and Accord Party (Liberal Union) against the Committee of Union and Progress) and replaced by a new cabinet supported by the Officers and the Freedom and Accord Party. The CUP would return to power, however, the next year after the Ottoman coup d'état of 1913. (Source: Wikipedia). Seven lines on special paper with watermark 'Joynson Superfine'. Letter of request to provide teaching for some students in the region.
