Vous me manquez beaucoup. » Gide évoque ensuite sa famille dont il a de tristes nouvelles (le décès de son beau-frère Marcel Drouin), le premier numéro à venir de la revue L’Arche, qu'il dirige avec Camus et dont Jean Amrouche est le rédacteur en chef, et la demande de Charlot qui veut utiliser sa préface pour une nouvelle édition des Fleurs du Mal. Ce recueil est le cinquième de la collection « Les contemporains » dirigée par Gustave Pigot. Gide succède à Maurras, Daudet, Proust et Valéry. Il s’agit pour l‘éditeur de laisser la parole à ceux de ses amis ou admirateurs qui n’avaient jusque-là pas eu l’occasion de s’exprimer à son sujet. Gide se mêla bien entendu de la composition de cet ouvrage dédié à sa gloire... Parmi les vingt-et-un contributeurs, on compte des confrères (Mauriac, Maurois, Montherlant, Morand...), des intimes (Copeau, Martin du Gard, Schlumberger...), des critiques (Crémieux, Jaloux, Thibaudet...). De manière particulièrement cocasse, le volume débute par une lettre de Valéry s’excusant de n’avoir pu se joindre à ce concert d’éloges, mais insistant sur leurs différences mutuelles. Comment mieux exprimer son embarras… Et pour faire écho aux polémiques dont il est l’objet, Gide prend le soin de citer perfidement « quelques phrases de M. Henri de Régnier (qui) risquent de se perdre » où son ancien ami dénonce les « pages dégoûtantes » de Si le grain ne meurt et les « élucubrations absurdes » des Caves du Vatican et des Faux-Monnayeurs...
