Eraclito, noto medico, fu dal 1731 lettore onorario di matematica nell’Università di Bologna e dal 1739 vi lesse anche lezionin di idrometria. Ebbe interessi soprattutto naturalistico-chimici (tre lavori in De Bononiensi scientiarum et artium Instituto atque Academia Commentarii) e letterari sfociati proprio in questa celebre traduzione in bolognese Ariosto che venne pubblicata postuma nel 1865. Prima edizione in ottime condizioni di conservazione e in esemplare numerato con appartenenza a personaggio di nota famiglia nobile bolognese.

br. Il 22 dicembre 1509 il Ducato di Ferrara sconfisse la Repubblica di Venezia nella battaglia navale della Polesella. La vittoria viene più volte ricordata nell'«Orlando furioso»: Ariosto le assegna un ruolo chiave nella celebrazione della casa d'Este e, a tal fine, fornisce un vero e proprio racconto in versi dello scontro. All'evento fanno tuttavia riferimento anche numerosi altri testi circolanti a Ferrara negli anni Dieci del Cinquecento: alcuni composti da membri della corte estense (Celio Calcagnini, Bonaventura Pistofilo, Daniele Fini), altri riconducibili all'attività di ciarlatani e cantimpanca spesso anonimi (ma di alcuni conosciamo i nomi: Bighignol, Niccolò de' Rossi detto lo Zoppino). Insieme, questi testi disegnano il perimetro di un vero e proprio discorso pubblico sviluppatosi a Ferrara sulla vittoria della Polesella. Oltre a fornire un primo studio sistematico di tutte queste opere, il volume mira a ricostruire la versione ariostesca della battaglia, a valutarne il peso e l'importanza nel «Furioso» anche di là dall'immediato intento encomia stico e a dimostrare come essa si costruisca in rapporto e, talvolta, in dialogo con l'oceanica messe di testi prodotta a Ferrara all'indomani della vittoria estense contro Venezia.

Poema della crisi del Rinascimento, l’Orlando furioso risente delle vicende tumultuose e drammatiche dell’epoca in cui venne composto, licenziato ed emendato: la catastrofe degli Stati italiani e la fine della loro indipendenza, lo scontro con la potenza ottomana e la sua cultura. È risaputo che un persistente motivo di inquietudine trascorra le ottave dell’Orlando furioso, pur senza venire apertamente tematizzato; il “poema della crisi del Rinascimento”, infatti, risente delle vicende tumultuose e drammatiche dell’epoca in cui venne composto, licenziato ed emendato: la catastrofe degli stati italiani e la fine della loro indipendenza. Ma persino la rappresentazione del musulmano, quand’anche complessa e articolata, non è affatto pretestuosa, quasi fosse nient’altro che un mero espediente narrativo avulso dal contesto storico e dalla realtà politica del proprio tempo: rimanda, piuttosto, alla minaccia della penetrazione ottomana in Europa e al concretissimo conflitto che si andava prospettando. Nel capolavoro ariostesco, dunque, le topiche sull’Italia e le rappresentazioni dell’alterità turca e musulmana, pur aderendo entrambe alle forme, ai modi, alle retoriche e ai modelli previsti dagli statuti letterari del classicismo civile, rivelano le implicazioni dell’opera con la storia, i conflitti, gli scontri di potere e di civiltà del proprio tempo e sembrano dar voce a una sorta di inconscio politico collettivo. In questo saggio si prova ad abbozzare qualche ulteriore percorso di lettura e ad aggiungere qualche notazione interpretativa a quanto già acquisito dalla critica, la quale ha ormai da tempo messo in discussione la proverbiale armonia ariostesca, insistendo sugli aspetti contraddittori e conflittuali del poema.
