Light scattered foxing largely to occasional upper margins some extremity wear with narrow losses at extreme crowns of spines three small external worm holes in lower joint of second volume otherwise a very good set. First this edition containing in the first volume a pictorial title a frontis ten plates and ten headpieces all engraved by de Longueil after drawings by Charles Eisen. There are no illustrations in the second volume which concludes with a number of additional poems and documents by Voltaire. Then as now La Pucelle d'Orleans was Voltaire's most consumed work so it is not surprising to find this volume detached from the its 39 companions. Voltaire's greatest poem but not the one you read in school. With Ariosto in mind Voltaire rewrote the Joan of Arc story with all the wit and critical distance of an 18th-century libertine. The result is that France's sainted woman warrior becomes the vehicle for an intelligent and licentious burlesque. Good and right-thinking people have always found it offensive but it doesn't really care. Nice binding charming illustrations. Octavo 21 cm; 420 pages portrait frontispiece by Martinet and 21 engraved plates. Text within typographic borders. Bound in contemporary etched leather scored in gilt. Large 8vo just under 24 cm pp. 227 218. Untrimmed. Bound in later 3/4 red morocco and plain boards rubbed along the extremities without the half title. "Mostly all of the copies were destroyed the freedom of the translation being considered injurious to the memory of Lady Charleville. Only 5 copies were printed on large paper. See the notes to the Renouard copy no. 1349- sale by Sotheby June 30 1834." The preface and notes cover 5 pages. ESTC; T137636.A nice clean tight set. A poem about Joan of Arc. From Wikipedia: "Voltaire was undoubtedly one of the most controversial writers and philosophers of the Enlightenment Age and The Maid of Orleans was also certainly one of his more contentious works. An epic and scandalous satire concerning the life of the not-yet-canonised Joan of Arc "the Maid of Orleans" the poem was outlawed burned and banned throughout a great portion of Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. Containing mockery and satirical commentary on the life and antics of its subject the poem itself has variously been described as "bawdy" and "licentious". Despite the often sexist and indecent contents of the text its notoriety and contraband status made it one of the most widely read texts concerning Joan of Arc for several centuries. Circulating throughout the banned regions by often surreptitious means the book was read by a large number of the populace. It was also disseminated by Voltaire himself to some of his colleagues and other members of the upper class the circle of people and the portion of society that the text was specifically intended for. The author 1762-1851 was the daughter of Thomas Townley Dawson she married first James Tisdall and then in 1798 Charles William Bury first Earl of Charleville. The first edition has a London imprint though it was actually printed in Geneva too and Voltaire's name does not appear on the title. Full modern speckled calf gilt-ruled spine edges stained red. Twelvemo. Small brown stain on verso of title-page and next recto some light dampstaining at top corner. Generally a very good copy. A spurious publication in which Voltaire blatantly pretends that this is a French translation of an original work by the brother of David Hume. According to Voltaire Hume's brother was pastor at an Edinburgh church and had produced two other plays which had been produced in London. "…il est le frère de ce célèbre philosophe Mr. Hume qui a creusé avec tant de hardiesse & de sagacité les fondements de la métaphysique & de la morale; ces deux philosophes sont également honneur à l'Ecosse leur patrie" preface. All editions of this work are rare. OCLC lists one copy of the present edition the Library of Congress copy. The first appearance of an early and important prose work by Voltaire a series of epistolary observations comparing British and French society culture science and philosophy. Written when he was living in England 1727-28 Voltaire's opinions shed a favorable light on British institutions and individuals including Sir Isaac Newton. Voltaire tells an early version of the apple falling from the tree story that inspired Newton's theory of gravity. When Letters was published on the continent as Lettres Philosophiques 1734 it was condemned by French authorities and precipitated one of Voltaire's many conflicts with the crown. <br/><br/> London: Printed for C. Directed against the Physiocrats and specifically Mercier De La Rivi�re�s Ordre naturel et essentiel des soci�t�s the witty and sarcastic tale takes its title from Mercier�s statement that in an organized state according to the physiocratic doctrine an average sum of forty crowns should suffice for the existence of each citizen. Voltaire singles out for special ridicule the proposed �impot unique� or single tax on land. The story revolves around the owner of a small estate yielding an annual net income of forty crowns who is alarmed at the promulgation of several edicts "by a few gentlemen who having some leisure have undertaken to govern the kingdom from their firesides". According to them the government "being by divine- and birth-right co-proprietor of his land he at least owes it one-half of his income" and that "as all wealth proceeds from land land is to bear the whole burden of taxation." In a modern blue cloth folding box with black morocco label. ESTC T-1128. The expected wear to the temporary binding: paper flaking from spine front joint cracked and tender boards somewhat soiled but everything still intact. Faint browning and foxing right at edges otherwise an excellent copy internally the text fresh and clean with all of its ample margins preserved. This is an unsophisticated copy in its original temporary binding of the first English edition of Voltaire's "Memoirs" published in the same year as the French version. Although he was one of the most influential leaders of the Enlightenment and a towering figure in French literature in the present work Voltaire 1694-1778 writes a quiet intimate account of the years 1733 to 1760 focusing on two of the most important relationships in his life--with the Marquise du Ch�telet and with Frederick the Great of Prussia. Still the book hardly escaped notice being banned in Paris; the introductory letter here notes that seven booksellers had been jailed for distributing it. Most of the uproar was caused by Voltaire's unflattering portrait of the Prussian king and his criticism of the French monarchy. �milie du Ch�telet was arguably the most brilliant woman of her day; Voltaire declared that she was "a great man whose only fault was being a woman." In 1733 she and Voltaire retired to her chateau at Cirey where they could study without the distractions of Paris. Together they tackled the works of Newton which the Marquise translated into French for the first time and accumulated a library of more than 21000 volumes. Theirs was a calm happy relationship in contrast with the turbulent friendship between Voltaire and Frederick II who made what the philosopher considered unreasonable demands on his time. The memoir ends while Voltaire was living in Switzerland and he recounts with relish the freedom enjoyed in that republic. The "Memoirs" is not a common book to begin with and is rare in a temporary publisher's binding as here. G. Robinson unknown

The Memoirs are really written by Voltaire and must soon or late become public.
