Jackson 89; Windle & Pippin A-65; Lowndes I 641. ◆Plates with occasional minor foxing otherwise A VERY PLEASING SET IN ESPECIALLY FINE CONDITION the text clean and bright and the decorative bindings unworn and remarkably lustrous.<br/> <br/> This charming bibliographical travelogue takes us from Peterborough to London and on to Lincoln York Durham Newcastle Carlisle Dumfries Edinburgh Glasgow St. Andrews and the border lands of Sir Walter Scott with many stops along the way at libraries cathedrals castles and ruins. Dibdin 1776-1847 was perhaps the most visible figure among the bibliophiles and bibliographers of the first half of the 19th century. His "Bibliomania" 1809 was an amusing account of the then-current craze of book collecting among wealthy English aristocrats and the book while cynical did much to encourage the mania. And it was at his suggestion that the Roxburghe Club was founded in 1812. Our binding is typical of the elegant work produced by William Matthews a Scot who became the leading binder in America during the second half of the 19th century. He was head of the bindery at D. Appleton and Company was an early member of the Grolier Club and was an important advisor in the formation of the Club Bindery a firm organized with the generally realized intention of executing fine American bindings that rivalled the best being produced in Europe. Portrait of Thomas John Dibdin playwright actor and song writer
London: Drawn etch'd & pub.by Dighton Charing Cross April 1799 1799. The earliest recorded portrait of Thomas John Dibdin. NCBEL III 1129-30. One crease; in fine condition. Rare. Hand-colored etching 20.5 x 16.5 cm with the caption "Sans Souci Jun." With the portrait is the manuscript note: "This Portrait of myself / taken in the palmy days of white neckcloths and frills / when I was as you see rather younger than at present is presented / by Thomas Dibdin April 28 1841." Around the image of Dibdin are depictions of his plays and songs. A fine portrait of the actor and writer Thomas John Dibdin 1771-1841 who like the other famous thespian Dibdins was involved in the English theater from an early age. Thomas John was one of three illegitimate children of Charles Dibdin and actress Harriet Pitt and in his early years on stage he used the name "T. Merchant" and his writings were published anonymously a fact that the artist Dighton makes a playful reference to in giving the subject of his portrait the name "Sans Souci Jun." Owing to the agitation regarding Reform and perhaps also because of cholera epidemics the rare book market appeared to Dibdin to be very low indeed. His diatribe was touched off by the absurdly inadequate prices that the original manuscripts of the Waverley Novels fetched at Evans' sale 19 August 1831. Dibdin's natural optimism made him prophesy that the depression in books would not last long . One hundred copies of this book printed on large paper were also issued. [Wm. A rare survival of an early nineteenth-century slip sheet issue of Charles Dibdin's 1745-1814 song on the theme of a sailor with 'a wife in each port' who ultimately resolves to resist their advances having sworn fidelity to his 'Poll' at home. The publishing house of John Jennings fl.1782-1819 of Water Lane Fleet Street was responsible for a prodigious output of cheap popular printing in the first half of the nineteenth-century. Single song sheets such as the one present were available from as little as one half-penny and read by an increasingly literate society. OCLC and COPAC together locate a single copy at NLS. . A curious issue it looks to be complete but I think it's perhaps lacking a gathering. There are only 22 numbered pages and there are fewer than ten illustrations if you only count the tissue-guarded plates. So presumably incomplete. Some foxing and a little edge wear. The History of the English Stage in 5 volumes
Charles Dibdin 1800. Good. All 5 volumes have been rebound in half leather with purple marbled paper and are housed in a custom slipcase. There is some foxing and stains to the text throughout the volumes and the print quality is fairly poor. Mr. Dibdin was a bit of a musical theater prodigy and polymath who ended up building his own theater to perform in. In addition to multiple songs and plays he also wrote a 4 volume memoir and a couple of 3 volume novels. Unusual to see a complete set in hardcover that is not print on demand. Charles Dibdin unknown
