Later three-quarter dark blue morocco raised bands gilt. This English edition is quite uncommon and like Bentley's editions of THE WHALE and REDBURN unsold copies were re-issued in 1853 with cancel title-pages. The English edition consisted of 1000 copies compared to 4524 of Harper's American printing. Fine set of Melville's highly symbolic fifth novel that depicted the harsh and inhumane treatment of sailors at sea.
