An excellent virtually pristine example small blank label to fly leaf address label to rear end paper tightly bound and crisp throughout. BAL 13680. Volume XI of the 16-volume Works of Herman Melville Standard Edition publication of which marked a key event in the Melville revival of the 1920s rescuing the neglected writer from obscurity and securing him a prominent place in the American literary canon. Israel Potter is loosely based on a pamphlet Melville acquired in the 1840s Life and Remarkable Adventures of Israel R. Potter Providence Rhode Island 1824. Potter had been a veteran of the Battle of Bunker Hill a sailor in the Revolutionary navy a prisoner of the British a secret agent and courier in France and a 45-year exile from his native land as a laborer pauper and peddler in London. Melville's plot combines a number of Potter's actual encounters with King George III and Benjamin Franklin with some he never had including those with Ethan Allen and John Paul Jones. N. B. This is a Very Good Minus copy of the First Edition First State with the mis-numbered Chapter XIV. A scarce title. Tan cloth binding heavily stamped with ruling and a decorative device on both covers. Clean text; 276 pages. Penciled names on the front paste-down and free endpaper; bookbinder chop on the FFEP. The text has occasional smudges and floodmarks but remains clear and fully legible; unfoxed. Bumped to a fray; faded particularly the spine and margins. The original gilt lettering on the spine is faint but still readable due to the blindstamping. Certainly not a beauty but basically a sound copy of this scarce title that might benefit from a bit of restoration. In an archival plastic protector. First Edition. Hard Cover.
