Spines nearly free of fading with a hint of discoloration to the spine ends small half-inch abrasion to the top fore-edge of the rear board of volume one very minor bump to the top corner of the front board of volume two. Very minor wear and uneven toning to the aluminum slipcase. Internally a very light dark finger smudge to the verso of the 2nd blank of volume one very light offsetting of the engravings to the opposite pages as usual volumes two and three are partially unopened else a practically unread fine set of one of the finest productions produced by The Lakeside Press.<BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> One of the most notable of Kent's illustrated books and a classic interpretation of Melville's story. Kent had complete creative control over his edition and "spent five years researching and designing his project during which time he discovered many of the 19th-century textual and visual sources that had influenced Melville" Abrams p. 377. The three-volume set was also one of the four titles produced by R. R. Donnelley and Sons' Lakeside Press under the "Four American Books" campaign with the other three being Edgar Allan Poe's Tales Henry David Thoreau's Walden and Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast. It was Moby Dick however that sold out completely and was hailed as among the great American illustrated books of the century and it is also credited with reviving public interest in a sublime but difficult novel.<BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> The book contains 280 striking wood cuts by Kent which are reproduced to illustrate Melville's classic nineteenth century whaling novel. So successful and captivating were Kent's designs that this edition is credited with finding the novel a wider audience and cementing the status of Moby Dick as an American classic. First edition of Moby Dick in a foreign language albeit an abridgement. Other novels by Melville notably Typee Omoo and Redburn had more favor with the public than the cursed Moby Dick. "During Melville's lifetime only his first novel Typee was translated into more than one foreign language. It was in fact apart from German translations of Omoo 1847 and Redburn 1850 and 1851 the only work by Melville that attracted the attention of publishers outside the English- speaking areas. In 1847 German and Dutch translations of Typee appeared. These were followed by editions in Danish 1852 and Swedish 1879 and finally a Polish translation 1882 the last to be published in the nineteenth century. Except for a severely abridged Swedish Typee in 1917 there was silence from 1882 until 1926 the year in which the first French translation of Melville's first novel Typee appeared" Phelps p. xiv. Moby Dick was not translated at all until this abridgement appeared in Berlin in 1927. The full novel was not translated into a foreign language until two years later when a Dutch and a Hungarian edition appeared. Art-deco woodcut illustrations and ornaments by Rockwell Kent throughout. Publisher's original chocolate cloth titled in gilt to spine and upper board. Ownership signature of Cherry Kearton dated Christmas 1930 in ink to front free end-paper. Very slight shelf-wear to spine-tips the slightest of rubbing to joints cloth otherwise bright and fresh. Contents evenly toned clean and neat. A near-fine copy. Originally commissioned for the Lakeside Press's 'Four American Books' series in 1930 the Lakeside edition of Moby Dick first appeared in three volumes complete with original woodcuts by Rockwell Kent. The trade edition was published in the same year reproducing the Kent illustrations in a smaller format. Cherry Kearton 1871�1940 along with his brother Richard published the first book illustrated solely by photographs of wild animals in 1895. Kearton was the first to photograph a bird's nest with eggs in 1892 to make a phonograph recording of a nightingale's song in 1900 and the first to develop naturalistic hollow photography hides in the shape of oxen and sheep.
