It is the forty-seventh publication of the Arion Press and rather scarce with no copies in commerce. The book shares characteristics with the sixth publication of the press Moby-Dick by the same author of 1979 in that the same typeface is used Goudy Modern . it is printed on the same paper which was made for that edition by hand to the specifications of the press at the Barcham Green Mill in England and bears watermarks of the mill the press and of a sperm whale; and the same artist Barry Moser has engraved a new portrait of Herman Melville on Resingrave for the frontispiece. The text type was composed and cast on the Monotype by Mackenzie & Harris. The display type is Goudy Open and was set by hand. The book was designed and produced by Andrew Hoyem and conceived in many ways as a companion to the 1979 Moby Dick one of the most important press books of the twentieth century." from the Prospectus. This book was suggested to Hoyem by the renowned scholar of poetry Helen Vendler. She regarded Melville as among the greatest American poets of the 19th century and was eager to make a selection that would show the variety of his best poetry. Despite the importance attached to his poems today by scholars and critics seldom did readers have any appreciation for Melville the poet.<br /> <br /> Bound in bright blue cloth with darker blue dyed leather goatrskin bands left over from the earlier Moby Dick. The bands run across the top and bottom edges of the book with title and author in silver foil. Printed on octavo sized paper of 6.75 x 9 7/8 inches using Goudy Modern type in a smaller point size than the 1979 volume. Top page edges trimmed while the fore-edge and bottom edges are untrimmed. The signatures were folded by hand and each copy was sewn by hand with linen thread over linen tapes. Housed in a blue cloth slipcase with blue goatskin title label to spine. The position of prime minister in New Zealand was known as premier until 1907. Robert Seddon 1845-1906 was premier from 1893; he died in office. He 'attracted much publicity for his outspokenness about the South African war: he visited South Africa in 1902 at General Kitchener's invitation. He was increasingly ready to arouse and exploit popular nationalism' 'Dictionary of New Zealand Biography'. The speech was 'Delivered at a Dinner given in his honour by the Public Bodies of Johannesburg during his recent visit' en route to the 1902 Colonial Conference in London held on the occasion of the coronation of Edward VII. The conference opened on 30 June 1902. In 1939 Herman Guest the publisher's son had some of these original Klerksdorp printings bound up and issued with a new foreword telling the story of the production of his father's 'records of the campaign in the Western Transvaal and elsewhere. One large sheet folded but uncut and unopened as issued; small puncture in the top left-hand corner; bottom margins of the first and last leaves slightly chipped and creased; in very good condition. 'The operations against the Boers in the neighbourhood of Klerksdorp which were begun on Sunday night March 23rd 1902 were very cleverly conceived and executed. The object of the operations was to form a long line of mounted men with the left on the Lichtenburg blockhouse and its right on the Vaal River and to work against the line of blockhouses' opening paragraph. Guest's account of this epic drive against De la Rey the Boers' commander in the Western Transvaal during which the troops made a round trip of 80 miles in 24 hours was written and printed in Klerksdorp soon after the event. In 1939 Herman Guest the publisher's son had some of these original Klerksdorp printings bound up and issued with a new foreword telling the story of the production of his father's 'records of the campaign in the Western Transvaal and elsewhere. 'Second Edition' appears on the front wrapper page 5 is 'Some Press Notices' of the first edition and page 34 is a lengthy 'Addendum to the Second Edition'. The short introduction states that the 'information is derived from Diaries kept by residents the personal communications of Dutch and English people who remained during the War and the details of the first British occupation from some of the principal actors'. The list of Klerksdorpians on active service with the British forces runs to four pages. A Parliamentary commission had revealed discrepancies within the accounts and instances of the breaking of regulations. After reports of a commission of inquiry indicated financial irregularities in the navy Lord Melville resigned his position as first Lord of the Admiralty in 1805. The following year he was impeached on charges relating to misappropriation of public funds during his term as Treasurer of the Navy in 1782-83 and 1784-1800. Tried by his peers he was acquitted of all charges. Melvilles was the last English impeachment trial conducted in the House of Lords and presided over by Thomas Erskine as Lord Chancellor. Prefixed are a sketch of the life and political character of Lord Melville and a complete account of the proceedings in Parliament relative to the charges on which the impeachment was founded. Chicago: The Lakeside Press 1930. Limited Edition one of 1000 copies. Hardcovers in publisher's aluminum slipcase. Quartos. 891 pages in total. Fine in good somewhat brittle acetate jackets all housed in the original aluminum slipcase. The volumes are bound in black cloth over bevelled boards with spines and upper boards titled and decorated in stamped silver foil top edges black. Acetate jackets have overall wrinkling a few chips and tears and are fragile. A strikingly well-preserved set of this amazing edition. Illustrated by Rockwell Kent. The stunning limited edition of what is widely regarded as the definitive edition of "Moby Dick." Melville's great novel was not well received when published in 1851 and it and he languished in relative obscurity through the rest of the 19th century. Rockwell Kent came to the rescue with the nearly 300 illustrations he produced for this edition while deeply immersing himself in the text as he worked over a period of years. The result is the closest thing possible to a Kent-Melville collaboration.<br /> <br /> Nicknamed "the fish in the can" because of the distinctive aluminum slipcase that houses the three volumes this edition is also a landmark in 20th century American fine press work book illustration and design. It was conceived and produced by the Lakeside Press for their "Four American Books" project. <br /> <br /> The Lakeside Press was the fine press division of the R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company of Chicago and the "American Books" project was designed to demonstrate their ability to execute fine printing on par with European presses. Harper's New Monthly Magazine Volume III 3 With the Town Ho's Story from Moby Dick June to November 1851
New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers 1851. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. The "Town Ho's Story" appeared on pages 659-665 in the October 1851 issue of Harper's New Monthly Magazine. It was the first appearance of any part of the great novel Moby Dick and became chapter 54 in the book. A publisher's note on page 659 says: "From The Whale the title of a new work by Mr. Melville now in the press of Harper and Brothers and now publishing in London by Mr. Bentley." The chapter concerns a potential mutiny and the appearance of Moby Dick that thwarted the uprising. It was a first report of the white whale while at sea. <br /> <br /> The volume is bound in modern black leatherette over cream paper covered boards with paper title labels to spine. The first appearance of Melville's novella The Encantadas appeared in three parts in Putnam's Monthly Magazine in March April and May of 1854. It was published under the pseudonym Salvator R. Tarnmoor. It was later included in Piazza Tales his only collection of short stories. Neither the book nor the individual stories were reprinted in Melville's lifetime. This work a series of philosophical "sketches" draw from Melville's whaling years. It was the most critically successful of the works in Piazza Tales. <br /> <br /> Bound in contemporary black leather over marbled paper covered boards with gilt titling and raised bands to spine. Minor wear and rubbing to boards edges and corners of boards. Bookplate of previous owner Arno Wiswell of Ellsworth ME to front pastedown. Occasional spots of foxing and soiling to several interior pages but clean and bright overall. A few pages in some issues are browned. The first appearance of Israel Potter Melville's novel about the Revolutionary War was published in six parts in Putnam's Magazine between July 1854 - March 1855. It was published in book form in March 1855. Loosely based on a real person Israel Potter recounts the life of a young American who fights in the Revolution is captured at sea by the British Navy and has a series of adventures in England involving King George III Benjamin Franklin John Paul Jones and Ethan Allen. The work ends sadly with Potter exiled in poverty in England for fifty years finally returning to America shortly before his death. The book was a commercial failure in its time but garnered critical appreciation. Volume IV also includes Melville's "The Lightning-Rod Man." Both volumes are bound in the original green cloth with embossed designs to covers and gilt titling to spine. Both volumes have a few light stains to the boards bumped / worn corners and rubbed cloth with faded titles to spines. Minor sunning to spines. Wear and minor chipping to book cloth along spine ends edges and corners of boards. Interior pages clean overall with browning to some pages. Foxing primarily to first and last few pages; although there are occasional spots of foxing throughout both volumes. Overall in very good condition. Volume IV: 672 pages; Volume V: 668 pages. This work was collected later in "Piazza Tales" 1856 and first published separately in 1940 at the Grabhorn Press. <br /> In instalments beginning on pages 379 and 473 is the first appearance of James Russell Lowell's "Fireside Travels" which would in 1864 be collected in "Fireside Travels." There is a four-part work entitled "Notes from my Knapsack" about a journey through Texas and Mexico commencing pages 170 252 365 and 660 and an amusing article entitled "Adventure on the Plains." Most of the articles stories and poems are unsigned. Longfellow Thoreau Bayard Taylor C. D. Warner Cooper and C. E. The history of the island of Van Diemen's Land from the year 1824 to 1835 inclusive
To which is added a few words on prison discipline. London : Smith and Elder 1835 printed by H. Melville in Hobart-Town Van Diemen's Land. Octavo contemporary straight-grained green morocco spine ruled in gilt expertly rebacked later endpapers; pp. iv; 276; occasional spotting a very good example. The very rare separate issue of the first edition of Melville's significant history highly critical of the administration of Governor Sir George Arthur. 'Attention has already been drawn to the histories of Van Diemen's Land that appeared in the early almanacs. All were mere sketches apart from Melville's substantial 'History of the Island of Van Diemen's Land' which had appeared in his 1836 almanac but was also separately published in London by Smith and Elder using sheets printed in the colony. It is well researched and well written with extensive footnotes quoting contemporary newspapers and government sources. Melville began with the Sorrell administration but concentrated on Arthur's government from 1824 until the end of 1835. The great issues of the period - freedom of the press trial by civil jury and representative government - are central themes and Melville creates the Aborigies with a sensitivity and balance unusual for the times. The London issue is very rare with only three copies changing hands in the past thirty years.
