"When I read this log after my brother's death in an automobile accident I realized that Gantt had not only lived the dream of the typical weekend sailor to take a year off and sail to distant places he had also captured the experience in the type of detail that would enable such a sailor to identify with it and that would give non-sailors a glimpse of the experience of an extended trip in a small boat . I have produced this transcription for family and friends." The log covers January 1 to October 29 1983. University of Delaware and the Mariner's Museum only in OCLC.

Mary B. An Essay on the Tongue in Functional Derangement of the Stomach and Bowels; With Some Observations on the Tongue's Aspect in Organic Disease of the Lungs.
London: Simpkin Marshall and Co. 1843. First edition. Blindstamped cloth. Very Good Minus. Presentation copy -- signed by Williams on FFEP. 8vo. 22.5 by 14.5 cm. xi 119 pp. Williams was the senior physician to the Essex and Colchester Hospital. This essay provides "some observation of the tongue's aspect in organic disease of the lungs". Williams argues that observations of the tongue in a distressed patient can hold the key to diagnosing the ailment which afflicts the patient. He provides an abundance of statistical evidence based on clinical observation. He writes "I was induced to enter upon this inquiry from observing that the mucous membrane and papillae of the tongue presented varying aspects in functional disturbances of the stomach." This title predates Yaggy's book on cancer of the tongue and Butlin's book on diseases of the tongue by 40 years and is contemporaneous with Harris' paper on the teeth lips and tongue read before the American Society of Dental Surgeons in 1841. Thus it is perhaps the first and certainly an early study on the relationship of the appearance of the tongue to health and disease. Not in Garrison & Morton. A few neat horizontal tears of cloth on the spine. General wear besides.

Simpkin, Marshall and Co. hardcover books

Original pen and ink drawing celebrating English navy
England 1839. Pen and ink drawing by Edward Williams signed at foot '1839. Edward Williams. 1839.' expertly repaired 2 inch tear small section of lower right corner supplied in later facsimile. A fine example of the Naval folk art of the period.

The drawing is in two parts: the upper section shows a half length semi-caricature portrait in profile of an English Royal Navy seaman with arms crossed holding a 'grog' cup within an oval border bearing the names of English victories at sea 'St. Vincent La Hogue Camperdown Copenhagen Trafalgar Nile &c. &c.'. The border is supported by the just visible end of a cannon to the left and an anchor to the right. The second half of the drawing is a shaped rectangle of black with an outlined eight-line poem: "Oh! There's a Land of ev'ry Land the pride / Belov'd of Heav'n o'er all the World beside. / There is a Spot of Earth supremely blest / A Dearer Sweeter spot than all the rest. / Where shall that land that Spot of Earth be found / Art Thou a Man/ A Patriot Look around / Oh Thou shalt find howe'er thy footsteps roam. / That Land thy Country - And that Spot thy Home."
