‎Williams Frederick Wells‎

‎Archive of correspondence to Frederick Wells Williams‎

‎New Haven India England and Japan 1915. A collection of 42 items mostly manuscript letters signed from a variety of academics administrators and Yale men to the sinologist Frederick Wells Williams 1857-1928 with a few letters from Williams' father-in-law the theologian Hemen Lincoln Wayland to his daughter Williams' wife Fanny. Frederick Wells Williams was the son of Samuel Wells Williams also a sinologist and missionary to China. The elder Williams was the first professor of Chinese language and literature in the United States. The younger Williams continued this trade and was himself a professor of Oriental history at Yale. The majority of the archive is comprised of manuscript letters addressed to Williams dealing primarily with matters of travel. Williams planned visits to Panama Morocco and particularly India and sought letters of introduction or meetings with men with connections there. The letters chiefly concern meeting up or making plans with some exceptions as noted below. Included are ALS's from: 1. Ion Perdicaris Greek-American heir most famous for being kidnapped in Morocco for a high ransom and compelling Roosevelt to declare "Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead!" Perdicaris assists Williams in making connections in Morocco. 2. Thomas Raynesford Lounsbury who provided 2 colorful letters one from London: "I am staying here. at this hotel. which bears the honored name Thackery but which to my horror . I find is a temperance hotel. I shall consequentially not stay long." The other a cryptic 1p note reading "You can rely upon me to stand by you unflinchingly on the solemn occasion to which you refer and all the more readily that there are no alien interests to interpose. I shall loom up at half-past six." Lounsbury was an English scholar at Yale and an authority on Chaucer. 3. Guy Lestrange a British Orientalist arranging a meeting 4. William Graham Sumner Yale Professor of social science. He asks Williams to find a replacement for his wife to speak at the Soc. Sci. Club. and compliments him on his previous lecture. 5. Charles Lewis Slattery a bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts who provides a "ghost signature" no letter included 6. John Ferguson Weir painter sculptor and teacher at Yale who writes a letter of profuse thanks. "I cannot let the day close without thanking you again for what your friendship prompted and effected - not without great painstaking on your part I know - but which has for me a depth of meaning not to be put in words though it fills my thoughts." 7. George Trumbull Ladd Clark Professor of Metaphysics and Moral Philosophy apologizing for missing a social call. "I was so absorbed in trying out some new rolls that I did not know anyone had entered the house." 8. Poultney Bigelow a Yale classmate of Williams' and traveling journalist. "Just in from the Alps and the Himalayas and the first message from my mound of P. O. Matter is your "US & China" - about which no man can write better than yourself. It was a great pleasure to me last winter in the East to note how tenderly your name is cherished in the minds of scholars & trust you will have many more years of usefulness adding ever to your father's reputation & your own." 9. Maurice Bloomfield American Sanskrit scholar thanking Williams for assistance. 10. Morgan Shuster providing a letter of introduction to General Goethals of the Panama Canal Zone a year after the canal's completion 11. John Bucher thanking Williams for sending something to him. 12. Theodore Morrison an administrator and educator on India regarding letters of introduction for a trip Williams is planning 13. A letter from an unknown author introducing H S Bayley of Hyderabad and "His Highness" the title I can't decipher and advising on how to prepare for Williams' arrival. 14. C. S. Mellen "the last of the railway tsars." Mellen says he will not be able to attend a meeting of the Social Science club because he is having a dinner with the employees and labor orgs of the Boston & Main Railroad. 15. J. G. Jennings inviting Williams to stay with him at his home near Muir College Allahabad. Jenning was at the time president of the college. In addition to this parade of men of note there are a few other letters including: 1. Five letters from M. Arao Oiwa a translator guide and print dealer from Japan discussing the print market in Japan promising products and encouraging Williams to send friends and students to Japan to travel. Oita charges 15 yen a day per person to guide them around the country and speaks warmly of his relationship with Williams. 2. A vitriolic ALS from a Maria Smith who has taken offense at Williams' comment on the behavior of Christian missionaries in China. "You say also that through it all the Chinese have maintained their own 'superior culture and moral principles.' Superior culture! And moral principles! As exemplified no doubt in the condition of their women; the state of marriage; the extremely sanitary condition of the country; the system of education; the political organization and a thousand other notorious systems of debauchery and corruption which have made China what she is and have kept her where she is sunk in ignorance and superstition." 3. Four personal letters between H. L. Wayland and Fannie Williams' wife. Wayland discusses news about the neighborhood and asks after his grandchildren. 4. A manuscript invitation to attend the second meeting of the Excelsior Society of Yale and to provide a lecture. Dated 1908 Signed "Y. Z. China" Also included are a few items of ephemera photo portraits of two Wayland men H.L. Wayland's pamphlet "What Mr. Jenkins thinks" Fannie's grade book marriage license and certificate of proficiency for Remington typewriting menu for the 20th anniversary of the Yale Wolf's Head society of which Williams was a member a menu to the Norfolk Inn on which a pen illustration of women at a table has been drawn a broadside schedule of services for Stewart Street Baptist Church with Wayland providing a sermon and a 6.25" x 10" photograph of an outdoor scene likely Hawaii with figures labeled in manuscript "Norman Garstin J. B. Alexander H. H. Garstin" Norman and H. H. Garstin were English born businessmen who managed a large plantation in Hawaii and moved to California in 1892. Overall an interesting look at the sort of connections a Yale professor maintained at the turn of the 20th century.

unknown books‎

‎Fifteen letters and drawings by Charlotte's Web illustrator Garth Williams to his daughters Jessica and Estyn 1962-1968; 5 TLS 2 ALS and 4 birthday cards with drawings to Jessica 1 TLS to Estyn and 3 TLS to both; together with 4 ink drawings: "Yoo Hoo.Tarzan!" "Estyn's Shadow" "Jessicat" and "My favourite Bottles.‎

‎GARTH WILLIAMS: LETTERS TO HIS DAUGHTERS. Together with:

3 black and white snapshots of new wife Alicia and son Juan Miguel; 1" x 2" each.

During this period Williams was living in Guanajuato Mexico with Alicia and their Juan Miguel. He signed his letters "Papá" "Garth" or in one instance "Sam Crabgrass." Williams sends updates about his health work and travel schedule shares anecdotes about his childhood and most frequently expels fatherly advice especially to the younger Jessica. He often writes rhyming or nonsensical sentences and in one letter writes phonetically in a Cockney accent "Ow's me ole chum" July 1 1963. Jessica and Estyn were both teenagers during this time.

In his first letter Williams sends a brief description of his new wife - thirty years his junior - and son "She was born in Guanajuato in 1942 on Oct. 24th. Alicia. Alice in english. She is 5 foot 3 inches tall. weight 100 lbs. Dark brown eyes black hair. Her son is Juan Miguel. He is 6 months old now" June 5 1962.

Williams sends letters filled with fatherly advice and sometimes shares stories about his boyhood. In one letter to Jessica Williams informs her about boys:

I see from recent letters you have written that perhaps you will be like everyone else and get mixed up with other people; not just girls but even with those horrible creatures - boys. When you get mixed up with boys you often get mixed with girls and mixed up altogether; because it is like measles-of-the-brain or mumps-of-the-thumper heart. February 20 1963

He goes on to share a long anecdote about when he has his first clash of the sexes - at age 10 - with two neighborhood girls named Betty and Pat who were sisters and concludes with the realization that "When you feel love which you may not be - no advice is any good even when you know it is good advice and suggests that Estyn maybe able to help her too.

A couple months later Williams writes a similar letter to Estyn though this time his advice is about morals: "You have to work out a code to live by when you are living by your rules you can say you are being moral. When not - immoral or unmoral" April 29 1963. He also tells Estyn that morals change and that "What USED to be bad is now OK" and gives the following example:

My mother did all the wrong things. She smoked a pipe rode a bicycle wore bloomers and ended up being chained to the railings in Hyde Park with a Mrs Pankhurst when they wanted to get the right to vote for women etc etc. Most people considered her unmoral in her behaviour. She was an art student in Paris for five years; - pretty dreadful. ibid.

In a long undated letter to Jessica Williams responds to her questions about God admitting "I don't know any more than you do" n.d. The explains that the topic is vast and unknowable but suggests studying about religion and recommends that she read Santayana.

It is clear that sometimes Williams masks his concern with humor or downplays serious discussions. When he found out that Jessica had started smoking he wrote her explaining how her genes make the habit especially dangerous for her:

My reason for warning you is - you inherit from your mother the same tendencies. See a doctor about it. Have him check you for bad circulation. People with bad circulation cant smoke. They feel colder than everyone else. Their fat does not help. They are lousy bed fellows with far too many covers and icy feet" May 4 1967.

He suggests that Jessica "Take peppermint Brighton Rock Kandy Kisses Humbugs Lollypops - anything. Create a new craze - eating candy instead of smoking. Create a distinctive image - the girl who chews lemon rind. Unique" ibid.

Williams's drawings usually illustrate something about Jessica or Estyn or something that Williams had seen. His card to Jessica for her October 1964 birthday shows her sleeping in bed with a full stomach and a candle stuck in her belly-button a pair of elaborate red boots discarded at the foot of the bed with the instruction to "Eat too much drink too much and sleep late - the secret of a lovely life - by J.W./We hope your birthday boots are keeping your tootsies warm" October 1964; "Estyn's Shadow" shows a slim Estyn in profile with eyes downcast with a bosomy and full-skirted shadow behind her 1964; "Jessicat" is a portrait of Jessica's face with cat-like eyes and paws 1964; and "My favourite Bottles" features two bottles labeled "Foot Lotion" and "Reducing Balm" with human-like proportions. unknown books‎

I hope to follow in your foot steps.I live in Mexico where I came almost 20 years ago to make a ruined Hacienda into my home. The altitude is 7000 feet above sea level and is the same as Aspen Colorado where I was living for ten years before coming here. I left six feet of snow. Snow every month of the year sometimes. Sixty below zero with the attendant problems of heating. But lots of lovely people and I love to ski gently over the mountains. I am only sixty-six and have a sixth child this year my daughter Dilys six months old. While living here I have illustrated several books.I have painted a number of experimental paintings. Now I hope to spend much time creating more paintings and perhaps sculptures and several writings for children and their adult inferiors. When I came here the bricklayer earned seven pesos a day. Today a bricklayer earns one hundred pesos for the same work. That used to be 60 U.S. cents a day as opposed to the present $4.00 a day.The outside visible world is changing here as fast as anywhere else. The inner worlds of the mind ego soul spirit are as undeveloped as elsewhere in the world. Greed avarice complete lack of concern for air water health of others gives us sewer-water for a river fumes of burning garbage for the night and now quite new to Mexico bill-boards beside the highway advertising Rum a Credit-Card a very large hotel with more threatned sic. But we have to count the good things and I am glad to say we still have many here." Natural folds but still in fine condition.

American artist who came to prominence in the post-war era as an illustrator of children's books including "Charlotte's Web" "Stuart Little" and "Bedtime for Francis."

unknown books‎

‎Sir Thomas Lipton Wins.‎

‎London: Peter Davies 1969. First edition of Williams' account of his record-breaking passage aboard the Sir Thomas Lipton in the Transatlantic Race of 1968. Octavo original cloth. From the library of James Stephen "Steve" Fossett with his bookplate to the front pastedown. American businessman and record-setting aviator Steve Fossett became the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in 2002 in his 10-story high balloon Spirit of Freedom. He completed the 2002 trip in 13 days 8 hours and 33 minutes and set records for both the Longest Distance Flown Solo in a Balloon and Fastest Balloon Flight Around the World. Fosset was also one of sailing's most prolific distance record holders set the Absolute World Speed Record for airships with a Zeppelin NT in 2004. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career including aviation's highest award the Gold Medal of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale FAI which he was awarded in 2002. Fossett disappeared on September 3 2007 while flying a light aircraft over the Great Basin Desert between Nevada and California. Near fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. When he determined to win the international Singlehanded Transatlantic Race of 1968 Geoffrey Williams a 25-year old Cornishman had never sailed a boat alone; and when he took Sir Thomas Lipton to sea on the qualifying 500 mile course the 57 foot ketch was at that time the largest boat ever sailed offshore by one man. The 34 competitors in this increasingly important international contest left Plymouth on June 1st 1968 and 25 days later Williams was the first to arrive at Newport after a record-breaking passage. ‎Autograph Letter Signed Adrian Michigan to Erastus Williams Esperance Schoharie County New York November 19 1836‎

‎folio 2 ½ pages of a bi-folium formerly folded some light damp-staining small hole in last leaf due to careless opening affecting a few words of text else in very good legible condition. Williams a recent emigrant to Michigan from New York writes concerning land and the land boom in Michigan: "Mr. Erastus Williams president of the coldwater society Esperance Sir . I must inform you that Mr. Anderson has not succeeded in entering our land as yet. The Kalamazoo office did not open until the 10th inst I got information that it was to open on the 8th Mr. Anderson had been absent to Grand River several weeks and I knew not what the prospect was . The office was to open at 10 o'clock a.m. and at 4 a.m. the people began to collect at the land office and by day light it was judged there were 300 people at the office - they kept collecting at the appointed hour when it was judged there were over 500 people there - at 10 three windows were opened - "and such a getting to the house you never did see" it was kept open one minute and they received a two bushel basket full of applications. Mr. Anderson was fifteen minutes too late in getting to the office - he had been to the woods viewing land and by some means mistook his way which detained him one night longer he arrived at Ionia the day before mounted his poney and rode him 40 miles over the bad roads without feeding the next morning he rode 30 miles by 10 o'clock but his watch being 20 minutes too slow was what deceived him. Mr Anderson has done all that lay in his power to enter the land I think - But no one can conceive the difficulties there are attending it unless they are present. When they had all got there the Receiver gave out word that he should receive no money but specie and Bills on the Michigan Bank and the Farmers & Mechanicks Bank Detroit & Bills of the New York City and Philadelphia Banks of 20 dollars and upwards - as they had all been informed that they would receive Safety Fund Bills very few were prepared for it And most of them had to submit to a shave of from 5 to 8 per cent. I wish you to inform Mr. Deuel that Mr. Anderson has made a discovery of a tract of land which he thinks in point of utility is equal to that which he was to select for us the timber is nearly the same and the location far superior. It is I believe in Range 13 west Township six north - which you will see by looking at Farmer's Map of Michigan is within from one to five miles of Grand River it is below the rapids where the river is navigable for steamboats and other large craft it is about 10 miles in a direct line from the rapids which will probably be the greatest place in Michigan and there is a fine village going ahead within 3 or 4 miles of the tract its name is Granville. The situation of the tract is considered by all that I have heard speak of it to be far superior to anything there is going at present. . What the reason is that it has not been taken before is strange but the drift has been to the interior. The climate is thought by all that have visited those parts to be equally as good as it is here - some think it is less subject to frost although there were reports to the contrary at the commencement of its settlement. There has been a great many from here to G River after land and all agree in saying that it is the most beautiful part of the territory. the land is all good in that vicinity I am informed. The land office will not open again before the 1st of Jan Anderson will be down in 3 or 4 weeks and I shall probably know about it. It is almost impossible to conceive how fast government lands are selling I think the opening of the navigation in the spring will close the concern in Michigan any decent land will then be worth 5 dollars per acre without doubt."
books‎
