Selznick; it was Selznick's mother Irene Mayer Selznick who produced the stage version of Streetcar Named Desire<i>;</i> it was she who recommended to film producer Charles Feldman to cast Kim Hunter in the screen version. Autograph Letter Signed "T. Williams"
on lower portion and verso of a typed letter on Esquire magazine letterhead November 8 1967 signed by Rachel Gallagher Editoral Associate. 4to 1 1/2 pages. A remarkable letter in answer to Gallagher's inquiry stating that Esquire is planning a feature on the salutary effects of a number of drugs on the market mentioning an article in Life magazine regarding the drug Dilantin and wondering if Williams would agree to participate in the article: "Dear Miss Gallagher - I am very interested in pills that don't contain barbiturates or amphetamine. At night I take two doriden tablets and a 100 milligram mellaril - and I have no deleterious effect from them. Pills are dangerous but sometimes danger must be accepted. I think we all know that. I shall try to get hold of the piece on Dillantin sic which is a pill I never heard of. I always check out with my doctor whatever I take. To combine pills with an excessive amount of alcohol is the greatest indiscretion and one I avoid." William's apparently failed to follow his own advice. His death in 1987 was brought about by his choking on the cap of a pill container. Williams 1914-87 Mississippi-born playwright and novelist; winner of 2 Pulitzer Prizes for drama "A Streetcar Named Desire" 1948 and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" 1955. Signed by Authors. F. I'm not at all sure that's accurate honestly. Unlike the American edition which also included the two one-act plays from which it was developed this edition contains the filmscript only. Octavo. 121 pages plus a two page note by Margaret Webster who directed the unpublished play in 1940 when it was aborted first by the clear hints of repressed sexuality in a Southern community from a fire and other misadventures. The author's first book though he had shown a rough draft in 1940 to his instructor John Gassner drama critic of the New York Herald. Once published in this small print edition by Pharos publishers in Utah in 1945 his writing began to attract Broadway producers who saw something of his raw power before The Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing to the extremities. Jacket design by Alvin Lustig. Rare and desirable signed. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof first heated up Broadway in 1955 with its gothic American story of brothers vying for their dying father's inheritance amid a whirlwind of sexuality untethered in the person of Maggie the Cat. The play also daringly showcased the burden of sexuality repressed in the agony of her husband Brick Pollitt. In spite of the public controversy Cat stirred up it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the Drama Critics Circle Award for that year. "Tennessee Williams never wrote a more explosive play than Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" Howard Kissel.
