A Narrative of Missionary Enterprises in the South Sea Islands; with Remarks Upon the Natural History of the Islands Origin Languages Traditions and Usages of the Inhabitants. Illustrated with Engravings on Wood by G. Baxter. Third Thousand.
London: Published for the Author by J. Snow 1837. 8vo pp. xviii ii 589 1 colour frontispiece 5 plates and 1 folding map. Engraved title-page and other illustrations included within pagination. Contemporary half sheep marbled boards spine divided by double gilt rules and lettered direct in gilt. A little toned and spotted. Rubbed some wear to extremities spine sunned. Ownership inscription of Martha Dunn Dalbeattie dated 1837 and modern booklabel of James Biggar to flyleaves. The major work of missionary John Williams 1796-1839 based upon his journal from his time preaching on the islands of Raiatea and Rurutu in Polynesia. He returned to England in 1834 after 17 years in the south seas and undertook a series of lecture tours to drum up interest in his work. ‘His book illustrated by the printmaker George Baxter was to become the most popular work on the Pacific islands since the Voyages of Captain James Cook; within six years 38000 copies had been sold’ ODNB. Subsequent solicited donations allowed him to purchase another ship and sail to the New Hebrides present-day Vanuatu to proselytise there but immediately upon landing he was killed and subsequently most likely eaten. Williams, John
A Narrative of Missionary Enterprises in the South Sea Islands etc. Second Thousand. 1837

First edition second thousand ie: issue. The errata and list of engravings is moved to the end of the introduction. Two pages of ads at rear. All else same as first issue. Condition is Good: primary condition issue relates to previous attempt at conservation and repair approximately 70-100 years ago. Looks to me like the original boards and spine were used to recase the volume which included glueing the spine to the text block and adding new endpapers. The original endpapers were retained. Unfortunately glueing the spine to the text block eventually leads to a crack in the front gutter which is what is happening here. Please see the image provided. The subsequent image shows same gutter location in the rear and you can see it is sound. The spine remains attached does not open beyond image and the block remains solid; though I would not try to hang a door on it. The boards are blind stamped golden brown cloth with honest wear. The original ffep has name and date 1837 of first owner. There are occasional random marks in the book but nothing out of the ordinary. There is light to moderate foxing at the front and back with essentially none in the interior. Paginates: original blank frontis xiii 2 folding map 589 1 2 pp ads blank plus 6 unpaginated plates including frontis. Old repair blanks are present front and back. List of 27 engravings includes color frontis and folding map 5 additional unpaginated plates on extra thick paper and 20 plates embedded in text or paginated. For more info see Hill 1874. Please see images of the book you will receive.
For the author, by J. Snow hardcover
