Augustus" is a work of historical fiction-or rather as some put it biographical fiction-of such quality that it was the first novel to share the National Book Award for Fiction. In 1973 with John Barth's "Chimera" in case you're curious. It tells the life story of the big guy himself Caesar Augustus the first Roman emperor from his teenage years through his death with a postscript by his final physician reflecting back decades later on what he knew of the man. One thing that makes "Augustus" stand out is that it is written as an epistolary novel but told through other documents as well like journal entries and fragments of manuscripts and official orders almost as if it is the collection of raw material slowly collected by an archivist and historian rather than a story told from on high by the standard omniscient narrator who knows all along how it's all going to turn out. What emerges is a rounded full-blooded portrait of a man who did what he needed to do to keep a vast empire running and doing so with some measure of justice-both economic and legal-for its citizens. Augustus may not have agreed with the tastes of those citizens and he may have had to act against his own desires but in the end an emperor's got to do what an emperor's got to do and it is obvious he has gained Williams' sympathy in the process.<br /> Our copy is a first edition first printing. It is quarter-bound in red paper over boards with green cloth over the spine. The spine is sun faded but the copper-stamped lettering with the title author and publisher is still quite bright. There is some shelf wear evident particularly along the top of the front cover but nothing major. The map that spreads across both pages of the end papers-identical in both the front and back-and is labeled "The Roman Empire at the Death of Augustus A.D. 14" is in excellent condition with no marks tears or writing. In fact there are no marks tears or writing on any of the pages. There is a speck of soiling on the bottom of the text block at the lower right corner. The paper quality and the type face make it pleasant to read. Viking Press unknown
