Original Artwork. Very Good. 4 X 5 3/4 Inches. Having purchased over 200 pieces of art from Garth Williams personal estate we discovered numerous illustrations for unknown children's book projects. We assume these to be from the 1960's when Garth was plagued by financial issues while supporting his second wife Dorothea and living in Mexico with his third wife Alicia Rayas. Garth actually married a fouth time and fathered his last child at the age of 66. While he was a prolific children's book artist of the 20th Century his earnings could never quite keep up with his lifestyle it would seem. The 1960's and 1970's saw Garth stretching his marketing abilities as well as attempting to rehash old royalty payments. <br /> <br /> This unique piece of original art features a comic sketch of a robotic coatrack. Signed "Garth" in lower right corner. Pencil ID # from his estate on reverse.<br /> <br /> Garth Williams was an illustrator of several of the more popular post-WWII children's books. His work includes Stuart Little 1945 and Charlotte's Web 1952 by E.B. White and the entire series of Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. he also illustrated Cricket in Times Square 1960 by George Selden and The Rescuers 1959 by Margery Sharp. <br /> <br /> Some light toning and wear to corners. His work includes Stuart Little 1945 and Charlotte's Web 1952 by E.B. White and the entire series of Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. he also illustrated Cricket in Times Square 1960 by George Selden and The Rescuers 1959 by Margery Sharp. <br /> <br /> Archive of over 125 Garth Williams 1912-1996 sketches letters proofs and production notes pertaining to "J.B.'s Harmonica" written by John Sebastian Lovin' Spoonful and illustrated by Garth Williams. Published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich the lot includes three copies of the stated "First Draft" of the book accompanied by two letters from the publisher discussing Garth's involvement in the project. The first letter is from Bonnie Ingber Editor of Children's Books for HBJ dated July 14 1987. The second letter is from Allyn M. Johnson Editor of Children's Books for HBJ dated July 27 1989. <br /> <br /> This archive includes 68 original drawings and sketches by Garth Williams 12 of which are on card stock with four 4 being signed "Garth Williams" and nine 9 with "Happy Harmonica" or "Harmonica" in Garth's hand on them. The lot includes a mock-up of the book created by Garth. The lot also includes 39 additional printed artist proof pages some with notes and page numbers written in ink. Signed first printing signed and dated by John Sebastian also included.<br /> <br /> The production of this book obviously took place over the course of several years with this lot being some of the earlier work done on the project. This fact is reflected in the that these original production drawings and sketches never made it to the final book. The drawings here are of "JB" as a human child. The book reflects "JB" James Bear as a bear cub. Most of the scenes portrayed in these drawings made it to the final published book they simply feature a bear instead of a human child. Interestingly this change created this archive of now UNPUBLISHED artwork that was saved by Garth himself and sold by the estate of Garth Williams. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich unknown

This issue of the magazine was rushed into production shortly before Sinclair was to report to jail for an earlier conviction for selling marihuana to an undercover agent. His incarceration lead to a host of protests most notably Allen Ginsberg who rushed the stage during The Who's Woodstock performance to plead Sinclair's case and John Lennon who recorded the song "John Sinclair" on his album Some Time in New York City. Very good.</p><p>The original tryout program for Vincente Minnelli's production of the anti-war musical "Hooray for What!" with Ed Wynn Hannah Williams Paul Haakon and Kay Thompson. Hannah Williams and Kay Thompson were subsequently replaced by June Clyde and Stephanie Stepanovich for the December 1 1937 Broadway opening at the Winter Garden Theatre. Written by Emma Rochelle Williams this tract aimed at saving the marker identifying the spot of this landing. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED ON THE FRONT COVER BY WILLIAMS TO MR. WILLIAM BEER. Beer was a fellow historian as well as a noted literary figure in New Orleans at the time of publication. Sunning and fold marks. Original stapled binding a bit rusty. OCLC locates only 12 copies. <br /> <br /> William Beer was a well-known librarian of his time who headed the free public library of Topeka Kansas; the Howard Memorial Library of New Orleans; the New Orleans Free Public Library. An early 1913 poster advertisement for two music scores published by Leo Feist: "When You Play in the Game of Love" a hit song by Al Piantadosi and Joe Goodwin and the "Kathlyn" Hesitation waltz. The poster was printed a week before the release of The Adventures of Kathlyn the very popular adventure serial released on December 29 1913 by the Selig Polyscope Company which was directed by Francis J. New York: New Directions 1990. Softcover. Very Good. A collection of catalogs order forms and promotional material from New Directions Books spanning six decades with the earliest dated piece from 1947 and the latest from 1990. Comprised of material made in various formats and sizes with a vast array of aesthetic directions from colored text to low-res black-and-white photos. The collection has been well preserved with only a few minor issues such as a small tear to the rear wrapper of just one catalog and light bumping to corners and rubbing to wrappers throughout overall a very good to near fine collection with all of the order forms intact and unused.<br /> <br /> New Directions was founded in 1936 by a struggling young poet named James Laughlin on the advice of Ezra Pound who read Laughlin’s poetry and so the famous story goes told him to go back to Harvard and “do something useful.†Laughlin indeed did do something useful creating a press resilient to the influences of commercialism corporate interests and fads instead bringing the avant-garde and experimental to readers around the world for nearly ninety years. As Maria Bustillos puts it in her 2016 feature on New Directions for The New Yorker “New Directions evolved as it did because its founder was as far-seeing in business as he was in matters of taste. Laughlin wasn’t looking to corner a market or to disrupt anything; his ambition was to create an institution that would last.â€<br /> <br /> New Directions remains in business today and while this collection does not span the entirety of the publisher’s long history it gives an impressive look into their approach to marketing over the span of six decades. Not only does it provide a history of New Directions’ ever growing ever evolving catalog it also displays the changing aesthetic of the brand from the rather modest offerings of the 1950s to the bright and colorful multi-format catalogs and order-forms of the 1960s to the subdued yet bold black-and-white designs of the early 1970s to the classic outline of Heinz Henghes’ sculpture New Directions’ signature colophon making its first appearance within this collection on the front cover of a 1988 catalog. Hubbell was an American poet who worked as a librarian notably at the New York Public Library. His work took him to Japan cataloguing books and he ended up staying for life he became a naturalised Japanese citizen and changed his name Hayashi Shuseki. These beautifully produced books are in both English and Japanese. Most measure approximately 4.5 x 3 inches stiff folders housing accordion folded poetry sheets with belly bands giving titles and sometimes signed on the belly band. No doubt limited and many still available from publisher. There are 36 such 'booklets' and 30 cards or single sheets with folds mainly the size of postcards with poems or information plus a larger folder 9 x 4 inches with Longhouse recommendations from 2004 Surviving - Essays by Cid Corman apparently a Longhouse production and the substantial Famous Blue Aerogrammes 2004 limited to 100 copies. This is more than a catalogue of their correspondence as each letter is given a precis of its contents and so this volume would act as a good substitute for being able to read the originals. Separated along the fold but both leaves are present rubbing to the exterior with some of the color bleeding through to the interior owner name on the front cover and minor edgewear and soiling complete but just a good or better copy. For voice and piano. Plate imprint "You're always Messin' &c 4." The front cover features a portrait of singer Lizzie Miles. Also included is a shellac record of Lizzie Miles singing "My Pillow and Me" by Brymn-Smith-Clarence Williams and "Black Man" by Spencer Williams. Unfortunately the record is cracked so it is not playable but it remains a neat companion piece to the sheet music. Lizzie Miles was born Elizabeth Landreaux in New Orleans. She was an Afro-Creole blues singer who had a long career touring the U.S. and performing with acts like Elgars Creole Orchestra Freddie Keppard King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band Paul Barbarin and Fats Waller. Philadelphia Pa. 1840. Calling Card printed one side only. 40 x 75 mm. 1 ½ x 3 inches. Painter's name scratched out and "Miss Louise Bradley West Springfield" is penciled in Engraved border pinholes. James W. Williams was a miniature portrait painter. He also experimented with early photographic processes to produce his portraits. He was born in England about 1787 and set up shop in Philadelphia. The Smithsonian holds two of his works; a Talbotype paper print with applied color of Edward Robinson Squibb and an ivory type of two girls untitled. Ivory types were positive photographic prints resembling a hand-painted ivory miniature and were first produced in the mid-1850s. As the term suggests some of these images were made on thin sheets of actual ivory or artificial ivory made of pigmented and hardened gelatin. Louise Bradley 1818-aft 1880 of West Springfield Massachusetts acquired Williams's calling card and used it as her own in this instance since she crossed out his name and penciled in her own. She married a farmer Charles White and lived and died in West Springfield. Portrait miniatures began to flourish in 16th century Europe and the art was practiced during the 17th century and 18th century but the development of photography contributed to the decline in the popularity of miniatures. . unknown

Backwoods Broadsides Chaplet Series - 49 Issues

A collection of 49 issues of the Backwoods Broadsides' Chaplet Series which ran for 100 issues from 1994 to 2006. The idea for the series came from publisher Stanley Pollet who authored the first number. This group of issues Numbers 9 16 17 36 37 40-51 66 67 70-100 come from the collection of poets Rochelle Owens and George Economou and is housed in two Backwood Broadside envelopes that are addressed to the couple. Among the poets represented in these issues are Owens Economou Aram Saryon Jonathan Williams David Meltzer George Bowering Keith Waldrop Alice Notley Hoa Nguyen Joanne Kyger Robert Kelly and Rachel Blau DuPlessis.
