‎Blake William‎

‎The Book of Urizen.‎

‎1978. New York Random House 1978 15.5 cm x 23 cm 102 pages. Original Softcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. From the library of philosopher Graham Parkes with his name on the front free endpaper. Edited and with a Commentary by Kay Parkhurst Easson and Roger R. Easson. William Blake was an English poet painter and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. His prophetic poetry has been said to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language". His visual artistry led one contemporary art critic to proclaim him "far and away the greatest artist Britain has ever produced". While Blake had a significant role to play in the art and poetry of figures such as Rossetti it was during the Modernist period that this work began to influence a wider set of writers and artists. William Butler Yeats who edited an edition of Blake's collected works in 1893 drew on him for poetic and philosophical ideas while British surrealist art in particular drew on Blake's conceptions of non-mimetic visionary practice in the painting of artists such as Paul Nash and Graham Sutherland. His poetry came into use by a number of British classical composers such as Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams who set his works. Blake's thoughts on human nature greatly anticipate and parallel the thinking of the psychoanalyst Carl Jung. In Jung's own words: "Blake a tantalizing study since he compiled a lot of half or undigested knowledge in his fantasies. According to my ideas they are an artistic production rather than an authentic representation of unconscious processes." Similarly although less popularly Diana Hume George claimed that Blake can be seen as a precursor to the ideas of Sigmund Freud. Amazon paperback‎

‎Blake William; Keynes Geoffrey Description and Bibliographical History‎

‎The Book of Ahania‎

‎London: Printed at the Trianon Press for the Trustees of the William Blake Trust 1973. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Blake William. Number 340 of 750 quarto size unpaginated. "The Book of Ahania" is one of Blake's lesser-known works and is generally agreed to be a continuation of "The Book of Urizen" with Ahania being the feminine manifestation of Urizen signifying pleasure. According to Geoffrey Keynes' Description this text " .along with "The Book of Los" were some of the last of the series of Illuminated Books completed by Blake while living in Lambeth. The manner of their execution suggest that he was wearying with the effort of making the splendid books that preceded them and was seeking for a less laborious method of production. Blake completed only one copy of each book and then laid them aside as if dissatisfied with his experiment. He never included either of them in any list of his productions and is not known to have disposed of them to any customer or patron. They therefore remained unknown until late in the nineteenth century." William Blake 1757-1827 is arguably the most original and highly-regarded English author - unusual in that he excelled both as an author and an artist. Although thought mad by his contemporaries he was held in high regard for his expressiveness and for the synthesis of philosophical and mystical senses within his work. Blake's work has been spectacularly reproduced through the pochoir technique by Arnold Fawcus and his Trianon Press which has an undeniable claim to being the finest press of its kind in the last century and has long been known for their unrivaled artworks in fine colour printing. ___DESCRIPTION: Original quarter blue morocco with hand-marbled paper sides backstrip lettered in gilt six colour plates reproduced by the collotype and pochoir process printed on Arches pure rag paper made to match the paper used by Blake; quarto size 11.5" by 9.25" unpaginated 6 plates and 5 pp. commentary limited edition no. 340 of 750 of the regular edition with 808 total copies. ‎Blake William; Keynes Geoffrey Descriptive and Bibliographical Statement‎

‎The Book of Thel‎

‎London: Printed at the Trianon Press for the Trustees of the William Blake Trust 1965. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Blake William. Number 301 of 380 quarto size unpaginated 8 plates and 5 pp. of commentary. "The Book of Thel" is an unrhymed verse poem and the first of the symbolic Illuminated Books to be completed after work had finished on the "Songs of Innocence" and before the etching of most of the "Songs of Experience" and was one of Blake's more popular works during his lifetime. lt is similar to "Songs of Innocence" in its dealings with the uncorrupted human soul personified in Thel who encounters the spiritual forms of experience in Lily-of-the-Valley the Cloud the Worm and the Clod of Clay all of which she eventually rejects to return to the spiritual world. William Blake 1757-1827 is arguably the most original and highly-regarded English author - unusual in that he excelled both as an author and an artist. ___DESCRIPTION: Original reddish-tan quarter morocco with hand-marbled paper sides top-edge gilt backstrip lettered in gilt 8 colour plates reproduced by the collotype and pochoir processes printed on Arches pure rag paper made to match the paper used by Blake each page is watermarked with Blake's monogram; quarto size 11.25" by 8.75" unpaginated 8 plates and 5 pp. of commentary limited edition no. 301 of 380 of the regular editions 426 copies total. Housed in publisher's slipcase covered with the same hand-marbled paper with matching morocco guards at the head and tail of the opening. ___CONDITION: A fine copy internally bright and free of prior owner markings covers are clean except for minor sun-toning to backstrip corners are straight text block is tight and square; overall a fine copy. ‎The Book of Los‎

‎London: Printed at the Trianon Press for the Trustees of the William Blake Trust 1976. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Blake William. Number 113 of 480 quarto size unpaginated 5 plates and 5 pp. of commentary. "The Book of Los" published in 1795 is one of Blake's prophetic books a sort of retelling of "Urizen" from the perspective of the character "Los". "The Book of Ahania" along with "The Book of Los" were some of the last of the series of Illuminated Books completed by Blake while living in Lambeth. The manner of their execution suggest that he was wearying with the effort of making the splendid books that preceded them and was seeking for a less laborious method of production. He completed only one copy of each book and then laid them aside as if dissatisfied with his experiment. He never included either of them in any list of his productions and is not known to have disposed of them to any customer or patron. They therefore remained unknown until late in the nineteenth century. William Blake 1757-1827 is arguably the most original and highly regarded English author - unusual in that he excelled both as an author and an artist. Although thought mad by his contemporaries he was held in high regard for his expressiveness and for the synthesis of philosophical and mystical senses within his work.
