‎Blake, William Hayward, John‎

‎Calling Card" sometimes called a bookplate for George Cumberland. Pasted into a copy of "English Poetry: a Descriptive Catalogue" 1947/‎

‎1827. N.p.: n.d. <br /> <br /> 8vo 141pp. original printed blue wrappers with the Blake plate pasted in at the front. The image and plate mark as per Essick 3.1 x 7.8 cm. and 3.3 x 8.1 cm. respectively. Printed in black on wove India paper measuring 5 x 10 cm.<br /> <br /> § Enigmatic version of the famous "Cumberland card" Blake's last engraving executed for one of his closest friends. It is lightly printed and pasted into a copy of the Hayward catalogue: inscribed at the front by Geoffrey Keynes to Robin Skelton and with a later pencil inscription see below noting that this is "a copy of Blake's engraving struck off by Keynes from the plate". This cannot be true since Keynes never owned the original plate and its whereabouts have never been established. More likely is that Keynes gave Skelton a spare proof of the card illustrated in his book Engravings by William Blake plate 38. A subsequent owner William Clair notes in pencil: "Presented to Robin Skelton by Geoffrey Keynes with a copy of Blake's engraving struck off by Keynes from the plate." and adding "Bought in Toronto". Skelton was a highly regarded poet and academic who though English lived in Toronto and taught at the University of Victoria.<br /> <br /> The images invoke one of Blake's greatest themes-the relationships between time and eternity. Opinions vary on the purpose of this plate but it should be noted that at the time 1827 it was not uncommon to paste a calling card into a book as proof of ownership. However no book once owned by Cumberland has been located with his card pasted in. It has also been suggested that the name of Cumberland in the center was executed by a writing engraver and Blake added his borders later. 39 examples of this print are known to Essick not including examples now untraced all but three on laid paper printed later and three on card but it is quite rare in commerce. <br /> <br /> Offered with the book Engravings by William Blake.<br /> <br /> Essick The Separate Plates of William Blake XXI. Bindman Complete Graphic Works of Blake 654. unknown‎

‎Calling Card" sometimes called a bookplate for George Cumberland‎

‎1827. London: William Blake 1827. <br /> <br /> Printed in black ink on thick card. Very finely printed in good condition though trimmed very close to the image at the left and right edges once pasted down and thus with traces of mounting on the verso and pencil notes from an earlier collector c. 1950 image and plate mark exactly as per Essick 1DD.<br /> <br /> § Blake's last engraving executed for one of his closest friends. "Blake inscribed the plate lower right with his name and age "A Æ 70." He may have sensed that 1827 could well be the last year of his life but took pride in being capable of pursuing his art and craft to the end. Blake was in fact 69 when he died; perhaps he inscribed "70" on the Cumberland card in anticipation of working on it until he turned that age. At least when considered in retrospect this most unusual inscription contributes to the elegiac and prophetic iconography of the design."<br /> <br /> The images invoke one of Blake's greatest themes-the relationships between time and eternity. Although probably intended as a calling card two books have been located with this card pasted in both written by George Cumberland Jr. Thus it has on occasion been sold as a "bookplate." Examples on card not in Cumberland's book are exceptionally rare and have been presumed to be of the earliest printing and possibly by Blake himself. All other impressions on laid paper most often are posthumous. Thirty-nine examples in all are known to Essick not including examples now untraced of which eight are on card of which one is described as printed in green ink. Essick The Separate Plates of William Blake XXI see entry 1DD for identical measurements but not this copy. Bindman Complete Graphic Works of Blake 654. unknown‎

‎BLAKE, William‎

‎Catalogue of the John Linnell Collection of Highly Important Works by William Blake Obtained Direct from the Artist . &c.‎

‎London.: Christie Manson & Woods. 1918. Original publisher's printed paper wrappers stitched as issued titles to front cover in black. 8vo. 246 x 155 mm. Title to front wrapper conditions of sale verso and the details of 215 lots. A fine unsophisticated copy of the important catalogue of the sale of this highly significant collection of William Blake material. The sale was held on Friday March 16th 1918 at Christie's 'Great Rooms' in King Street St. James's. In 1818 John Linnell 1792 - 1882 met William Blake 1757 - 1827 with whom he remained friendly until Blake’s death in 1827. Linnell became an important patron to Blake in the final years of his life commissioning among other works a set of engravings illustrating the Book of Job and buying the watercolours that Blake had made for John Milton’s 'Paradise Regained'.The first portion of the sale was made up of works by Linnell himself as well as works and prints by other artists. Lots 148 to 215 all relate to Blake and include among sketches watercolours and letters the 98 drawings for Dante the drawings for the 'Illustrations of the Book of Job' the drawings for Milton's 'Paradise Regained' the illuminated books 'America A Prophecy' 'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell' 'Songs of Innocence and Experience' two copies 'There Is No Natural Religion' 'Vala' and more; notable are also the eleven sets of Blake's engravings for Dante and the 68 copies of the 'Illustrations for the Book of Job'.Four of the lots are priced in sepia ink in the catalogue: a note records that '148 Dante's 'Divina Comedia'' sold for 7300 Guineas; '149 The Book of Job' i.e. the original drawings sold for 3000; '151 Paradise Regained' fetched 2100; and '215 . 'Songs of Innocence and Experience'' achieved 700 Guineas. The catalogue a remarkable survival shows some toning to the wrappers and has been folded at some point a few chips to the rear wrapper and some dog ears do not detract from a well-preserved and unsophisticated example. Although well represented and widely held in institutions the catalogue is very scarce in commerce. Christie, Manson & Woods. unknown‎

‎BLAKE, William (1757-1827)‎

‎Christ Trampling on Satan‎

‎London 1903. Engraving by Thomas Butts after Blake. Laid paper. First and only state. Hand-written in ink upper right corner "Cent quatre vingt septieme 187" Christ walks over the vanquished Satan.<br/> <br/> This fascinating engraving after a Blake drawing depicts a muscular and single-minded Christ with a bow in one hand and arrow in the other walking on the beard and chest of Satan who despite his lifeless eyes reaches for Christ's bow. Blake's Christ is more reminiscent of Hercules or Gilgamesh than the Christ known to us through church iconography and his Satan reminds us more of Zeus than Christianity's Devil. Archibald Russell in The Engravings of William Blake Houghton Mifflin 1912 writes that this image illustrates a passage in Paradise Lost Bk. VI 763 but was an allegory for the triumph of imagination or creativity over reason. Thomas Butts senior 1757-1845 and junior 1788-1862 were both given drawing and engraving lessons by Blake starting in March 1806. They produced a number of plates from Blake's designs although his level of direct involvement can only be estimated. The present plate was sold by the Butts' descendants at Sotheby's lot 20 24 June 1903. The plate was acquired shortly after the auction by Edward J. Shaw of Walsall. He apparently had printed a number of impressions by December 1903. These are the earliest recorded impressions of this plate other than a single impression sold with the plate at the auction. The plate remained in Shaw's possession until 1925 when it was sold at Sotheby's 29 July lot 158 to Mansfield. The New York dealers E. Weyhe bought a number of impressions and possibly the plate itself as they still had multiple copies for sale as late as 1965. Essick records 18 copies of this print on various paper types but no order of precedence is given and he had not seen any `proof' impressions.<br/> <br/> Essick The Separate Plates of William Blake. unknown‎
