Blake, William (1757–1827)
Satan Smiting Job with Boils. And smote Job with sore Boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head based upon Job 2:7 . Original engraving.
London: William Blake March 8 1825 1826. Original engraving. Platemark 20.3 x 16.3cm; Sheet size 34.6 x 26.2cm. .Two marginal abrasions.Printed on thick unwatermarked rag paper. From the 100 sets on drawing paper with the word "Proof" removed from the plates printed in 1826. Plate 15 from "Illustrations of the Book of Job.".Binyon 120 second state; Bindman 640."Illustrations of The Book of Job" consists of 22 engraved plates executed entirely with the burin. In the collection of the British Museum there are three complete copies as well as separate impressions one related drawing and the copperplates themselves. In its technical excellence the series is a tribute to earlier engravers whom Blake admired such as Albrecht Dürer."Illustrations of The Book of Job" was commissioned by John Linnell in 1823. It is dated March 1825 but was not finished until 1826. It is the last of several works on the theme of Job which were made by Blake throughout his career. Initially about 300 sets of impressions were made - about half of these were described as "proof" sets. John Linnell retained the copperplates and a posthumous edition was printed in 1874. The plates are now in the British Museum. London: William Blake, March 8 , 1825 [1826]. unknown

London: W. Pickering . and W. Newbery 1839. First letterpress edition issue without "The Little Vagabond. xxi iii 74 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Full green morocco gilt. Fine copy. Circular gilt vellum label of William Twopeny. First letterpress edition issue without "The Little Vagabond". xxi iii 74 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. The first letterpress edition of Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience preceded only by the small number of copies of the illuminated first edition engraved and colored by Blake. With a laudatory Preface by the Swedenborgian James John Garth Wilkinson 1812-99 who edited and arranged the present volume for publication. Wilkinson worked from Charles Augustus Tulk's copy of the illuminated first edition c.1795-1807; Tulk had previously lent his copy to Coleridge. The work appears in two issues with or without a poem entitled "The Little Vagabound" at page 71 which was supposedly canceled by the editor out of prudishness. Most of the illustrations are in color.

No Flaws or Blemishes but minimal shelf handling; The bindings are tight and square. On the copyright page in light pencil is a note from a book-seller that he believes this to be copy #2.

According the the Online Archive of California the Size of editions: 526 copies. This may be one of 240 copies numbered 1 to 240 published by the Trianon Press Chateau de Boissia Clairvaux Jura France and distributed by Faber and Faber Ltd. 24 Russell Square London W.C.1. There may have been a loose plate #54 which is absent. Blake's visionary poetry explores the dualities of human existence juxtaposing innocence with experience purity with corruption and the divine with the earthly. First published in 1789 and 1794 it remains one of the most significant works in the Western literary canon.

The collection consists of two parts: Songs of Innocence which presents a world of purity and grace and Songs of Experience which addresses the darker more cynical aspects of life.

Blake's work is notable for its deeply personal spiritual and philosophical exploration and its unique blend of visual and poetic art. His illuminated printing technique in which he combined poetry and intricate illustrations set his work apart from conventional poetry. In these collections Blake's engravings vividly complement his verse creating a full sensory experience that continues to influence artists and poets.

This 1967 edition published by Rupert Hart-Davis Ltd. in collaboration with the Trianon Press is a notable reprint of this iconic work. This edition is renowned for its high-quality production and faithful reproduction of Blake's original illuminated designs. The Trianon Press known for its careful attention to detail and craftsmanship produced the illustrations with the same techniques that Blake had used making this edition a fine example of modern fine printing.

The 1967 publication includes an insightful introduction and notes shedding light on Blake's unique vision his artistic process and his cultural and philosophical context. This edition stands as both a collector's item and a scholarly resource appealing to those interested in the intersection of poetry visual art and 18th-century Romanticism.

Keywords: Illuminated Printing Poetry Romanticism Visual Art Blakean Art.
