Blake, William (illustrator). Blair, Robert
William Blake's Watercolour Inventions in Illustration of The Grave by Robert Blair; Edited with Essays and Commentary by Martin Butlin and an Essay on the Poem by Morton D. Paley
2009. N. P.: The William Blake Trust 2009.

Folio 95pp. Original black silk binding with morocco labels stamped in gilt to top board and backstrip black cloth-covered slipcase; illustrated throughout with color reproductions of watercolor drawings as well as engravings. As new.

§ First edition limited to 186 copies out of print on publication. From the announcement: "These watercolor designs which disappeared from the public eye from 1836-2001 came to light in a Glasgow bookshop and were later offered as an entity to institutions and collectors at a price which as it turned out none could afford or at least was prepared to pay. Eventually in the face of much protest the portfolio and the 19 designs were offered for sale in 20 separate lots at Sotheby's New York in 2006. The drawings are now widely dispersed and it is most unlikely that they will ever again be seen together." The sale was roundly condemned at the time as an act of cultural crime. This book and the facsimile portfolio in the de luxe issue are now the only record we will ever have of the original series. Happily the Blake Trust created a superb book which is and will surely remain the single most valuable reference work on these remarkable Blake drawings. unknown

BLAKE, William; GRIERSON, H[erbert] J[ohn] C[lifford] (ed)
William Blake’s designs for Gray’s poems reproduced full-size in monochrome or colour from the unique copy belonging to His Grace the Duke of Hamilton. . .
London: Humphrey Milford Oxford University Press 1922. FIRST EDITION. Tipped in frontispiece portrait and engraved title preceding 116 plates 6 in color. Original publisher’s cloth gilt lettering some rubbing on corners; interior excellent. First publication of Blake’s designs for Thomas Gray’s poems number 16 of 650 copies. The sculptor John Flaxman commissioned the project as a gift for his wife in 1797. Blake produced 116 watercolors for his friend all of which are reproduced in this limited edition. Gray 1716–1771 was a popular poet in eighteenth-century England; however due to his self-critical nature he only published thirteen poems in his lifetime. His poem Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard remains his most well-known work and earned him his popularity and legacy in English literary history. Blake 1757–1827 a poet in his own right as well as an artist was well-suited for illustrating Gray’s poems including Elegy given his romantic style and underpinnings of religion philosophy and melancholy. William Blake's Songs
2007. New York: Center for the Book Arts 2007.

Large 8vo 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 ins. 36pp. title-page and 12 poems on loose folded sheets each illustrated in a variety of media and signed on the verso by the illustrator. All contained in an orange folding paper wrapper. Fine.

§ Number 13 of an edition limited to 39 copies in all. A collaborative artist book in portfolio created by eight women students at the Center for Book Arts in New York under the direction of master printer Barbara Henry representing in letterpress and illustration twelve poems from William Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience. Each of the nine leaves is signed by the artist-printer.

The poems and their illustrators are: The Garden of Love by Delphi Basilicato; The Fly by Amy Bronstein; A Dream by Bonnie McLaughlin; The Human Abstract by Amber McMillan; The Laughing Song/The Poison Tree by Sarah Nicholls; The Shepherd/The Tyger by Michelle Raccagni; The Blossom/The Sick Rose by Rosie Schaap; Infant Joy/Infant Sorrow by Louisa Swift; Title-page by Barbara Henry.

The poems in the Songs of Innocence and of Experience contrast the spiritual freedom of childhood with the binds and hypocrisies of the adult world and are at once philosophical political and radical. Blake wrote engraved printed and colored the Songs himself making him arguably one of the first creators of an artist's book and an excellent subject for these women book artists of the 21st century. unknown
