Marbled boards morocco backstrips slipcases backstrips stained slipcases worn internally a fine set as issued. § Edition limited to 518 copies in all including 100 copies for Paul Mellon personally of which 12 copies were a super de luxe issue in three volumes with extra material 36 copies were a de luxe issue also with extra material but in sheets unbound18 copies were hors commerce contents unrecorded and 352 copies either bound in 3 volumes in slipcases or as a single set of the loose sheets in a box. This is copy #37.In this one of Blake’s most extravagant tours de force he took Gray’s poems as a springboard for epic watercolors. Mounting the text on a large sheet he painted all around the margins some of his most powerful and striking designs. The illustrations to a poem on the death of a favorite cat drowned in a goldfish bowl for example are a classic example of his visionary powers transcending the prosaic. The Trianon Press reproductions are recognized as the finest examples of the art of facsimile reproduction; working from the originals in Paul Mellon’s collection each leaf is faithfully hand-colored through stencils to achieve an astonishing exactitude. Very good with spine a touch darkened and light dusting to original cream boards and slight spotting to endpapers. § Trade edition of this handsome facsimile of the very rare original edition of 1783. “The original 1783 copies were seventy-two pages in length printed in octavo by John Flaxman's aunt who owned a small print shop in the Strand and paid for by Anthony Stephen Mathew and his wife Harriet dilettantes to whom Blake had been introduced by Flaxman in early 1783. Each individual copy was hand-stitched with a grey back and a blue cover reading "POETICAL SKETCHES by W.B." It was printed without a table of contents and many pages were without half titles. Of the extant copies eleven contain corrections in Blake's handwriting. Poetical Sketches is one of only two works by Blake to be printed conventionally with typesetting; the only other extant work is The French Revolution in 1791 which was to be published by Joseph Johnson. However it never got beyond the proof copy and was thus not actually published.Even given the modest standards by which the book was published it was something of a failure. Alexander Gilchrist noted that the publication contained several obvious misreadings and numerous errors in punctuation suggesting that it was printed with little care and was not proofread by Blake thus the numerous handwritten corrections in printed copies. Gilchrist also notes that it was never mentioned in the Monthly Review even in the magazine's index of "Books noticed" which listed every book published in London each month signifying that the publication of the book had gone virtually unnoticed. Nevertheless Blake himself was proud enough of the volume that he was still giving copies to friends as late as 1808 and when he died several unstitched copies were found amongst his belongings.†Bentley BB 132. Illustrations of the Book of Job with essays and commentary from several notable Blake scholars including Charles Ryskamp David Bindman John Commander Geoffrey Keynes Robert Essick Bo Lindberg and Barbara Bryant. The plates are comprised of 22 fascicules including the title-page and 21 plates of Blake's engraved Illustrations of the Book of Job in facsimile of the proof copy lately in the collection of Sir Geoffrey Keynes. Each fascicule also contains reproductions of related material together with a plate-by-plate commentary by Bo Lindberg. Colour versions of WIlliam Blake's Book of Job designs. with three portfolios containing "The New Zealand Set" of 21 plates and a title-page "The Collins Set of Coloured Engravings" of 21 plates and a title-page and "Four Coloured Engravings" of plates 11 15 18 and 20 from The Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge. Plates printed by pochoir method at the Trianon Press Paris under the supervision of the late Arnold Fawcus.A surprisingly hard title to find from the Blake Trust being their last publication until the 2009 issue of “The Grave†watercolors. The edition included a less expensive version of this issue as well as two more elaborate issues. The analysis of the various states of the Job plates and of the coloring of the three colored copies known is not printed anywhere else and thus this set is essential for anyone studying this book surely Blake’s masterpiece of engraving.
