Indianapolis / New York / Virginia / West Virginia 1930. Unbound. Near Fine. A collection of 112 letters from Henry St. John Blake and his extended family who were involved in World War I. Most letters are near fine with small tears and some age-toning. An archive of letters and correspondence to Henry St. John Blake during the 1900s through 1930s. Henry St. John Blake's brothers Russell and Edward served in World War I with letters detailing the experiences at training camps. There are a couple letters from Russell and Edward to their father and mother. Edward was stationed as a foot soldier at a base in Indianapolis and Russell was in New York with the Navy. Their parents William Blake Sr. and Alice Horne lived in Virginia and later West Virginia however their family lineage is from Galloway Ireland. Most of the letters home are about being at the base and training "Say nothing about the following to no one. The vanguard of our unit leaves soon. Sorry that I won't be able to get home just remember always that my first and foremost thought will be that of duty and service." There is a great amount of pride for his country in the letters as both Russell and Edward are happy to serve and send their parents their commission checks. William Blake Sr. worked as an editor for the West Virginia News. Some of the son's letters talk about the flu epidemic around the camps. Another set of the letters are correspondence for Henry St. John Blake. The letters are predominately about life insurance policies his application to the Civil Service Committee and there is some various ephemera to Blake. This includes book sales from Trotty Veck Messengers with the books he's purchased business cards small tags for events he attended newspaper clippings about the war and a drawn out family tree for a dog Blake was purchasing. Blake does receive letters from his brothers asking "What in the devil has become of you" presumably because Blake's letters are often to his parents only. In another letter Edward asks his mother to tell Henry to write him back. Other ephemera includes a Justice Court notice for Charles Blake on refusing to pay a debt of $50. An interesting archive of correspondence from four brothers in World War I to their parents waiting back at home. unknown
