Paris: Alphonse Picard et Fils 1901-1903. Cloth. Good. 9" by 5.5". Not Stated. A new edition of this two-volume autobiography of the French writer Philippe de Commynes with notes and an introduction. An uncommon two-volume work in the publisher's original cloth binding. Bookplate to the front paste down of both volumes. Illustrated with a folding map to the rear of Volume II. Philippe de Commynes or de Commines 1447-1511 was a writer and diplomat in the courts of Burgundy and France. Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve called him "the first truly modern writer". Commynes wrote his Mémoires while exiled to his estate at Dreux. This work is considered an immensely important historical record of the reign of Louis XI. Volume I contains books I to V relating events from the beginning of Commynes' career to the death of Louis XI; Volume II contains books VI and VII relating the events of the Italian wars ending with the death of King Charles VIII of France. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally fairly smart except for fading to the spines and to the rear board of Vol I. Light mark to the lower extremity of the front board to both volumes. Internally firmly bound. Pages are age toned with a small ink inscription to the margin of most pages.
