Octavo. 372 and 369pp. One of the most powerful arguments against the schism started by the Protestants which inevitably ended in contradictory creeds none of which its most extreme leaders were willing to claim were infallible. Bossuet argues that the Reformation had created a false religion but "the truth which comes from God possesses from the first its complete perfection." Although the Lutheran apologist Viet Ludwig von Sechendorf attempted to refute Bossuet the careful reasoning still has much that modern scholars in both the Protestant and Catholic traditions agree is compelling. In one sense Henri Daniel-Rops has taken this argument and taken out some of the sting from Bossuet. When Manfred Fleischer recommended this work in the late 1960's he went against his fellow Lutherans but as a scholar preferred the search for historical assessments rather than those there are confessional.
