<p>EVERYTHING WORTH KNOWING ¶ 24 382 2 p. 12mo pi12 A-2I8/4 167 x 96 mm ¶ First edition of the esteemed theologian and preacher's posthumously published "introduction to philosophy that presents logic psychology natural science and theology as a synoptic system" Braider. One of four issues each bearing a different publisher's name in the imprint. ¶ The opening line surely sets the tone: "Wisdom consists of knowing God and of knowing oneself" translated. What follows is a complete guide to attaining this state of enlightenment arranged in five lengthy chapters: the soul the body blood circulation is covered in some detail union of body and soul God the creator of both and the difference between man and beast. ¶ Bossuet prepared the work for the Dauphin's instruction in 1677 providing "a comprehensive survey of the then most recent results and theories in natural philosophy and medicine" Grell. In the years between its composition and publication Charles Urbain notes that it was still appreciated by learned circles having presumably circulated in manuscript. --- PROVENANCE: Nearly full-page note about the work in early ink opposite the title page. Single penciled marginalium on p. 345. --- CONDITION: Contemporary sprinkled leather; spine tooled in gold; red edges; marbled endpapers. Title vignette; head-piece; decorative initial. First leaf and last leaf are blank. ¶ Leaves N5-8 torn in the upper inner margin these being repaired prior to binding and offering witness to early paper repair methods. ¶ Mild scattered foxing. Jacques-B�nigne Bossuet 1627-1704 was a French bishop and theologian renowned for his sermons and other addresses. He has been considered by many to be one of the most brilliant orators of all time and a master of French style. Court preacher to Louis XIV Bossuet was a strong advocate of political absolutism and the divine right of kings. He argued that government was divine and that kings received their power from God. He was also an important courtier and politician. Edited by his nephew J. B. Bossuet Bishop of Troyes. Includes: "Traite de la concupiscence. Ou Exposition de ces paroles de saint Jean: N'aimez pas le monde ni ce qui est dans le monde &c." which has a half-title and separate paging and the Colophon: De l'imprimerie de Claude Simon. An inclination toward sin and evil is called "concupiscence". Catholics taught that Baptism erases this tendency of original sin and turns man back towards God.
