(Dred Scott) Benton, Thomas H.
Historical and Legal Examination of that part of the Decision of the Supreme Court of the United States in the The Dred Scott Case which Declares the Unconstitutionality of the Missouri Compromise Act
New York: D. Appleton and Company 1857. First Edition. 193 1 6pp. Ads in the rear. 1 vols. 8vo. Publisher's dark blue cloth blocked in blind upper cover lettered in gilt very minor fading to spine. First Edition. 193 1 6pp. Ads in the rear. 1 vols. 8vo. "When the Wilmot Proviso against slavery in the territories acquired from Mexico produced angry debates Benton denounced the proviso but he also refused to support the southern demand for territorial expansion. He insisted that slavery where it existed was in no danger while geography climate and the opposition of existing territorial populations would prevent its expansion. Though a slaveholder himself Benton described the institution as an incurable evil preserved only by racial fears and animosities. He hoped that it would ultimately disappear but meanwhile he prayed that it would never be expanded . In 1857 the Supreme Court in the Dred Scott decision ruled that the federal government could not bar slavery from any federal territory. Benton answered this ruling with a 192-page Historical and Legal Examination of the Dred Scott Case 1857 which glorified the Union appealed for sectional peace and denounced the decision as bad constitutional law" ANB. With equations diagrams printed diagrams flow charts tables 1 large folding. Blue buckram binding gilt lettering on spine minor age toning shelfwear still a NF copy. Dr. Pigford helped develop the process used by the government at the Oak Ridge National Laboratories and then nationwide to harvest plutonium for nuclear weapons from irradiated reactor fuel. This dittoed & lithoprint work would later be developed and revised to contribute to his most important early work “Nuclear Chemical Engineering†first published in 1958 and considered the first text in the field. He also worked on the unsuccessful Cold War effort to develop a small enough nuclear reactor to power an airplane but also spent decades working on how to process and handle nuclear accidents and nuclear waste and was a member of the commission that investigated Three Mile Island. It was also his report for the Secretary of Energy following the Chernobyl disaster on the Hanford Nuclear Reactor which stated that the reactor producing plutonium there was far more dangerous than American commercial reactors and the safety measure proposed would not be sufficient.
