Camus Albert
A Happy Death.
New York: Alfred A. Knopf 1972. First American edition of Camus' first novel published over 30 years after it was written and 11 years after his death. Octavo original cloth. Translated from the French by Richard Howard. Afterword and Notes by Jean Sarocchi. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket photograph by Henri Cartier-Bresson. In many ways A Happy Death foreshadows The Stranger but its most striking difference - beyond its differences of plot and intention - is that her Camus reveals more of himself than in his later more mythic fiction. At the root of the novel's drama is the existential concern: how is one to live in order to have a happy death Alfred A. Knopf hardcover books

L’Etat de siege. Spectacle en trois parties.
Paris: Gallimard 1948. First edition of this classic play by the Nobel Prize-winning author. Octavo original wrappers. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half-title page "A. M. Antomin en cordial hommage Albert Camus." In near fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Written in 1948 The State of Siege--the original sense is closer to state of emergency--is a play in three acts presenting the arrival of plague personified by a young opportunist in sleepy Cadiz and the subsequent creation of a totalitarian regime through the manipulation of fear. In a piece written in 1948 in reply to criticisms from Gabriel Marcel Camus defended his decision to set the play in Spain and not in Eastern Europe citing the ongoing oppression in Spain France's collusion in it and the Catholic Church's abandonment of Spanish Christians. The piece was first performed in October 1948 and was initially received poorly by critics and public who had eagerly awaited the work but expected a dramatization of Camus's novel The Plague. While the two share a common background the treatments are entirely different in tone. Although Camus himself was pleased with the work critics remained unimpressed. The State of Siege has remained constantly in print in French and since 1958 in an English translation by Stuart Gilbert--in Caligula and Three Other Plays. Gallimard unknown books

L’Exil et Le Royaume.
Paris: Gallimard 1947. First edition of Camus' short story collection exploring themes of existentialism and absurdism. Octavo original cloth. One of only 950 numbered copies this is number 783. In near fine condition. Rare and desirable. This collection of six short stories covers the whole variety of existentialism or absurdism as Camus himself insisted his philosophical ideas be called. The six works collected in this volume include: The Adulterous Woman The Renegade of a Confused Spirit The Silent Man The Guest Jonas or the Artist at Work and The Growing Stone. The final story most clearly manifests Camus' existential ideals with a protagonist who actively shapes his life in spite of receiving a deep insight into the absurdity of the world and acting morally nevertheless. The First Man.
New York: Alfred A. Knopf 1995. Early printing of the first American edition of Camus' deeply moving autobiography the original manuscript of which was discovered in the car wreckage when Camus was killed and was subsequently transcribed by his daughter. Octavo original half cloth pictorial endpapers. Translated from the French by David Hapgood. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket by Carol Devine Carson. First published in France in 1994 - thirty-four years after the handwritten manuscript was discovered in the car wreckage that killed Camus - this autobiographical novel recaptures Camus' often difficult childhood in Algeria. Because the pages were never honed and edited by Camus - the handwritten manuscript was simply transcribed by his daughter - the story of childhood carries with it a lyrical spontaneity vastly different than anything published during Camus' lifetime.
