A touch of rubbing to lower edges and a few corners one corner just slightly bumped a tiny nick on one board but the bindings in excellent condition and the contents pristine--obviously never read. This is a pleasing set containing the 17th-century first English translation of the story of the famed knight-errant. The original "Don Quixote" i.e. the first of its two parts was published in 1605 and it has been one of the world's great books ever since. It was translated quickly into several languages including English Thomas Shelton translating Part I in 1612 and Part II in 1620. His versions are used in this "Tudor Translations" edition which bases the text of Part I on the rare 1612 version instead of the more commonly reprinted 1620 edition. Almost nothing is known of Shelton who boasted that he translated Part I in a space of 40 days. Hasty or not his translation conveyed the charm of the original and has deeply influenced subsequent English versions. Our re-publication has separate introductions to Part I and Part II each about 40 pages long describing the life of Cervantes and analyzing his work the commentary written by James Fitzmaurice-Kelly 1857-1923. This Scotch-Irish scholar learned the rudiments of Spanish from a schoolmate and continued to study the language through reading "Don Quixote" which ever remained his favorite book. As a young man he served as a tutor in Spain and he later became a professor of Spanish literature holding appropriately the Cervantes chair at King's College London. Questo libro raccoglie per la prima volta l'insieme di saggi brevi e di articoli scritti dal grande intellettuale e scrittore spagnolo sull'opera di Cervantes, e in particolare sul Don Chisciotte. Era un progetto che lo stesso Unamuno voleva realizzare e non ebbe poi il tempo di condurre in porto. Si presenta come una raccolta organica che, ponendosi accanto al celebre"Vita di Don Chisciotte e Sancio" (1905), completa per il lettore italiano il panorama delle importanti ricerche di Unamuno sul mito più grande della letteratura spagnola. Milan Kundera, nella sua Teorìa del romanzo, pone il Don Chisciotte come fondamento del romanzo moderno. Il volume comprende il saggio "Il cavaliere dalla trista figura" del 1896, mai tradotto finora, dove Unamuno confronta le descrizioni che raffigurano Don Chisciotte nel romanzo con i ritratti che i pittori moderni gli hanno dedicato. Tra baffi cadenti e riflessioni sulla bruttezza del personaggio di Cervantes, lo scrittore torna sul tema che gli sta più a cuore: il valore universale di questo mito. Nella raccolta anche alcuni articoli polemici, tra cui "Muoia Don Chisciotte" che prende di mira gli eruditi che impantanano Don Chisciotte nelle dispute filologiche perdendo il messaggio umano e morale. Come scrive nell'Introduzione Enrico Lodi "sia Unamuno, sia Don Chisciotte, incarnano al meglio il conflitto tra la volontà di compiere un ideale che serbano dentro e l'impossibilità di raggiungerlo.

ril. Miguel de Unamuno è stato il fautore di una religione poetica, issata sull'esperienza della parola creatrice, mediante la quale non soccombe alla tentazione del nulla. Tra le sue opere fondamentali, un ruolo peculiare svolge il celebre libro su "Don Chisciotte". La forma del commento, che consente di attuare un dialogo interiore, è opera di uno spirituale piuttosto che di un intellettuale, la cui attitudine è contrassegnata dal pessimismo trascendente e dall'esistenza tragica. Unamuno confessa che il suo libro contiene "tutto un sistema filosofico", oltre a rappresentare un potente incitamento ad abbracciare una vita fondata sull'ideale etico, sull'eroismo tragico onde conquistare quella gloria e fama individuali e collettive, in ultima analisi l'immortalità, alla quale si può pervenire solo con una fede basata sul forte volere. Don Chisciotte è pervaso da una rassegnazione attiva, da una lotta titanica e utopica contro il mondo, alla ricerca del senso ultimo dell'esistenza e del proprio destino. Esprimendosi nella forma paradossale, ritenuta il linguaggio tipico della passione oltre che affermazione della volontà di creazione disperata, Unamuno assurge a pensatore tragico.
