Very minor rubbing along the hinges of both volumes. Very minor shelfwear. Overall a lovely set. <BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> Set in new Ptolemy types and finely printed on Batchelor hand made paper in red and black in two columns. This is the first use of the Ashendene Ptolemy type and as such it represents a new direction for the press in its final years of activity. In Franklins eyes Emery Walker's new typeface derived from the font used for the 1482 Ptolemy printed in Ulm was "a much lighter more elegant letter than the earlier fount" the denser Subiaco. "And with the use of this less dictatorial typeface the printer could cast away a little of his restraint in planning whatever lay outside it. So in Don Quixote we find at last an alphabet of open and freely drawn decorative initial letters designed by Louise Powell and shadowing something of Kelmscott Press taste from years before." The Ptolemy face was used just three more times before the Ashendene Press closed.<BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> Includes decorated initials and borders by Louise Powell who was an early student of Edward Johnston. The blocks were then cut by W.M. Quick & Geo. H. Ford. The first page of each book is embellished with elaborate engraved marginal decorations. The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha is an early novel written by Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Cervantes created a fictional origin for the story in the character of the Moor historian Cide Hamete Benengeli whom he claims to have hired to translate the story from an Arabic manuscript he found in Toledo's bedraggled old quarter. The protagonist Alonso Quixano is a country gentleman who has read so many stories of chivalry that he descends into fantasy and becomes convinced he is a knight errant. Together with his earthy squire Sancho Panza the self-styled "Don Quixote de la Mancha" sets out in search of adventure. The "lady" for whom Quixote seeks to toil is Dulcinea del Toboso an imaginary object crafted from a neighbouring farmgirl her real name is Aldonza Lorenzo by the illusion-struck "knight" to be the object of his courtly love. "Dulcinea" is totally unaware of Quixote's feelings for her nor does she actually appear in the novel. Published in two volumes a decade apart Don Quixote is the most influential work of literature to emerge from the Spanish Golden Age and perhaps the entire Spanish literary canon. Ejemplar perfecto de esta excelente edición formada por 2 volúmenes que reproducen en facsímil las ediciones príncipes. El tercero recoge notas interesantes correcciones y apuntes. El cuarto lleva 101 láminas seleccionadas entre 60 ediciones del Quijote. Nuestro ejemplar porta en el tomo III los números del 1 al 10 del Boletín de la reproducción fototipográfica de la primera edición de Don Quijote de la Mancha publicada por el Coronel Francisco López Fabra publicado entre mayo de 1871 y 1880 cada uno entre 3 y 4 páginas 44 páginas en total. Edición de 2605 ejemplares numerados de ellos 1605 se destinaron para la venta en España y 1000 para el extranjero. Ejemplar número 948. Esta es la primera vez que se facsimiló la primera edición de los dos tomos del Quijote. Rius dice de ella: ""La aparición de las ediciones príncipes de ambas partes del Quijote y reproducidas por la foto-tipografía fue un acontecimiento bibliográfico y tipográfico. Sus ejemplares ya rarísimos."" Ejemplar especial con la encuadernación original y ""oficial"" firmada al pie de la lomera por F Martí y el Suplemento completo de los 10 números rarísimos que aparecieron con el título 'Boletín de la Reproducción Fototipográfica de la primera edición de Don Quijote de la Mancha'.
