New edition with notes. Considered a founding work of Western literature this work is often said to be the first modern novel and is one of the best-selling novels of all time. Following the adventures of a member of the lowest nobility an hidalgo from La Mancha named Alonso Quijano who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his mind and decides to become a knight-errant. In order to revive chivalry and serve his nation he takes the name Don Quixote de la Mancha. Written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra an Early Modern Spanish writer widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language and one of the world's pre-eminent novelists. Translated by Henry Edward Watts a British journalist and author on Spanish topics. With two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of each volume. In the original red cloth binding. Externally smart with light rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spine. The odd small mark to the boards. Front hinge just starting but firm to volume two only. Internally firmly bound. This printing of the Black edition includes the wonderful Adolphe Lalauze plate illustrations issued with the Motteux translation of 1884. Given the piratical nature of the publishing world at the time we have no idea if Black or Motteux or Lalauze received any payment for the use of the work but this presentation is excellent though the covers are significantly worn the sewn interior binding is quite solid and the pages uncut so it was clearly never read; the paper is clean but moderately yellowed George Barrie; Philadelphia hardcover
