Original full cloth binding embossed in blind. Slight loss top of spine. Boards stained. Hardbound. Past and Presen was first published in April 1843 in England. It combines medieval history with criticism of 19th-century British society. Carlyle wrote it in seven weeks as a respite from the harassing labor of writing Cromwell. He was inspired by the recently published Chronicles of the Abbey of Saint Edmund's Bury which had been written by Jocelin of Brakelond at the close of the 12th century. This account of a medieval monastery had taken Carlyle's fancy and he drew upon it in order to contrast the monks' reverence for work and heroism with the sham leadership of his own day. Thomas carlyle 1785-1881 was considered one of the leading intellectuals of his time; his racism and antisemitism has certainly tarnished that reputation. This work published a year after his death was among several works released by the historian J.A. Froude who had control of his papers. They were immediately controversial. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition an uncommon book. Dark green cloth binding with stamped rules; titling in gilt on the spine. Clean text; 263 pages; very bright and clear. Tiny bit of wear at the tips only; both gutters have cracked but remain strong. There are interesting associations apparent in this book. The front paste-down has the bookplate of the historian/bibliophile Francis Massey O'Brien 1908-1994 with his signature on the half-title. The title page has the signature of "C. Hale" who is identified by pencil notations as the jurist Clarence Hale; and notes that his son was a member of Congress. Quite an attractive book; in an archival plastic protector. First Edition. Published a month after Carlyle's death by his literary executor James Anthony Froude to much controversy over the editing. They were republished in 1887 with Harvard professor Charles Eliot Norton as the editor. Two volumes in contemporary half calf over marbled boards the calf undyed at the spines and dyed green at the covers to harmonize with the green marbled boards backs gilt marbled end papers top edges gilt wear showing at joints yet still holding nicely small rubs at corners interiors clean and bright.
