A new Bodley Head edition of the collected letters and memorials of Jane Welsh Carlyle a celebrated letter-writer. A new edition of this work published by the Bodley Head in two volumes in the publisher's original cloth bindings. Ink inscription to the front free end paper of Volume I dated 1910. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 7 plates to Volume I and a frontispiece and 7 plates to Volume II. Collated complete. Jane Welsh Carlyle 1801-1866 was a Scottish writer. She did not publish any work in her lifetime but was widely considered an extraordinary writer of letters which are displayed in this two volume set. Virginia Woolf called her one of the "great letter writers" and Jane's husband Thomas Carlyle believed her to be a literary talent. In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally very smart with a little wear to the spines but otherwise colour is good and gilt is bright. Internally firmly bound. Contents are clean and there are no inscriptions though outer edges may be foxing and very slightly softening. Each book is 7 inches by 5 inches and the collection would require approx 33 inches shelfspace. The spines are slightly faded with a gilt title and the boards are red a little faded and each has a standard black title. A novel centered on the life of Wilhelm Meister a young man who undergoes a journey of self-realization while attempting to escape what he views as the empty life of a bourgeois businessman. After a failed romance with the theater Wilhelm commits himself to the mysterious Tower Society. Translated from the German of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe a German polymath who is widely regarded as the most influential writer in the German language. In the original full cloth binding. Externally smart with light rubbing to the extremities and minor fading to the spines. The odd small mark to the cloth with minor loss to the heads and tails of the spines. Internally firmly bound.
