London: 1561. FIFTH COLLECTED EDITION of the works with an additional 20 poems. Folio:. This is the first of three variants illustrated with 3 woodcut title borders woodcut initials and ornaments and 22 woodcut illustrations that do not appear in the other variants. A fine copy bound in later calf incorporating the original blind-tooled English calfskin boards. Title laid down and slightly frayed at edges with a contemporary ownership inscription at the head partly canceled in ink. Small wormholes to first few signatures and in the latter part of the volume. Leaf D6 lightly browned small tear in leaf F3 corner tear to leaf E3 extreme edge of blank lower corner of signature G snipped small stains on N1-2. Some stains on signatures Ee and Ff portion of blank margin of leaf Ii2 torn away Oo5 corner tear final 2 leaves strengthened in gutter. The general title page has an elaborate woodcut border incorporating an image of Edward VI and Richard Grafton's device McKerrow & Ferguson 67. The woodcut borders McKerrow & Ferguson 75 used for "Canterbury Tales" and "The Romance of the Rose" depict the genealogies of the Houses of York and Lancaster culminating with Henry VIII. The 22 woodcut illustrations show the different pilgrims from the "Canterbury Tales." An additional woodcut of the knight on horseback introduces the "Knight's Tale." Provenance: Daniel Dun early signature on title – Thomas Newton signature dated 24 April 1576 – Richard Heigham signature dated 1625 – John William Pease bookplates – Lucy Anne Pease bookplate – Howard Pease bookplate – Pease family bookplate. There were two series of woodcut illustrations used in 15th and 16th c. editions of the "Canterbury Tales": one by William Caxton used in his 1483 edition in 1498 by Wynkyn de Worde and the 1532 and 1542 editions of the "Works". The second set modeled on Caxton's was made for Richard Pynson's 1492 edition of the "Tales". For the second Pynson edition 1526 some of the original 1492 blocks were used while others were re-cut on new blocks. It is this group of illustrations that appear in the 1561 edition. Title page and separate title for "Romaunt of the Rose" within decorative border woodcut of the Knight on B1r woodcut of the Squire on E6v woodcut initials throughout. Money-Coutts family copy with their bookplate to front pastedown dated 1889 signed J.D.B. i.e. John Dickson Batten 1860-1932. Lacking 7 leaves: A1 title A2 A8 E1 fol. xviii E56 fols. xxiii-xxiv and 3Q1 fol. ccli. Some misbinding in quires 3K and 3P. Without final blank 3Q6. The title and following leaf supplied in good quality facsimile on matching laid paper; paper restoration to fore margins of A2-4 recte A3-5 and lower margin of A7 and a couple of lower outer corners elsewhere text unaffected; the contents apparently lightly washed and pressed at time of rebinding the paper still strong; with the stated imperfections a good copy of an edition usually found in poor defective condition. Fourth collected edition one of four variants each with a different publisher's name in the colophon: the others were Richard Kele Thomas Petit and Robert Toye. Pforzheimer notes that to judge from the relative numbers of extant copies it is probable that they shared equally in the edition. The woodcuts of the pilgrims that had first been printed in Caxton's 1483 edition are here replaced by two new cuts of The Knight and The Squire which were then reprinted in later black letter editions through to 1602. Speght used many of the notes collected by his friend John Stow whose 1561 edition had included John Lydgate's "The Story of Thebes" published here with a valuable 2 page list of Lydgate's works at the end. Folio 33.7 cm 13.25". 4 CCCLXVII ff. lacking 6 prelim. ff. incl. t.-p. and "General Prologue"; pagination erratic; CCCLXXVIII lacking but supplied in facsimile. <br><br>Early edition of the first comprehensive collection of Chaucer's works � along with several spurious pieces. This is the fourth edition of the Workes following the first of 1532 which included the first printed appearances of a number of Chaucer's verse and prose pieces among them the Book of the Duchess and the Legend of Good Women. Editor William Thynne examined a number of manuscripts and printed versions in order to provide what he considered the most accurate renditions possible of the texts; his work helped to shape and direct the Renaissance perspective on Chaucer and his canon.<br> That the text is printed in double columns of => black-letter � this being late for that except in realms of serious law or theology � will have lent it an air of "auctorite" and perhaps of pleasantly suitable archaism for its original readers; the printer has also supplied => decorative woodcut initials in a variety of sizes some historiated some signed "I.R." and one with a backwards "N" while the "Knight's Tale" opens with => a large woodcut of the armored knight mounted and with jousting lance in hand. The Romaunt of the Rose is marked by a separate title-page with an elaborate border depicting the genealogy of Henry VIII using the tree motif. As the title-page and prologue are not present in this copy it is difficult to ascertain which of the two variant states of this edition is represented here. <br> <br> ESTC S107207; STC 2nd ed. 5076. Period-style mottled calf framed in double blind fillets spine with raised bands and gilt-stamped author and date; front free endpaper with recent pencilled annotations. 6 preliminary leaves including title-page first part of text through "General Prologue" and final leaf CCCLXXVIII lacking the latter supplied both in facsimile of original printing and in 18th-century inked manuscript! First four leaves with upper portions repaired with loss of two paragraphs of "Eight Goodly Questions" which is bound in between two leaves of the preface two and a half paragraphs of Hoccleve's "To the Kings Most Noble Grace" about 14 lines of Thynne's dedication to Henry VIII and upper portions of the table of contents; tear to first page of the "Knight's Tale" neatly repaired from rear. Pages age-toned some from the midpoint onwards with waterstaining across text noticeable but never dark nor obscuring; otherwise the mostly marginal inksmear chip/tear at an edge or expectable soiling only. Several paper flaws one significant and with the printing accomplished over it in instructive fashion; in some sections apparent bad inking for the press with light spots and dark ones scattered; pagination notably erratic with some numerals skipped and some repeated. Occasional instances of early inked annotations and marks of emphasis particularly in the Romaunt including long lines drawn marginally and across text. Imperfect "read hard" when young and priced to reflect that; but still a Chaucerian high spot featuring all the tales of the Canterbury Tales and many other important pieces the array set forth in => the 16th century's "antique" style. Foliate roll to inner dentelles in blind curl pattern marbled endpapers. Externally near fine. Internally the title has sellotape staining to head of page catching engraved border and all along the fore-edge slightly chipped to edges as is the 'progenie' leaf. Some light browning some water staining to top margin of the first three signatures usually light once or twice heavier but generally unobtrusive small hole to bottom margin of Ff1 bottom corner torn away to Ggg6 not affecting text. The scarcer variant issue with the 'Geor. Bishop' imprint see Pforzheimer with the 'progenie' leaf by John Speed text mainly in black letter. "This edition was considerably revised mainly with the aid of Francis Thynne. This edition contains the first portrait of Chaucer the first life of Chaucer printed in English albeit largely fictitious some previously unpublished material Chaucer’s English translation of Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy and several works incorrectly attributed to Chaucer. "Chaucer is the first great figure of modern English literature the first great humorist of modern Europe and the first great writer in whom the dramatic spirit so long vanished and seemingly extinct re-appears. Except Dante there is no poet of the middle ages of superior faculty and distinction." DNB Among his many works which include The Book of the Duchess the House of Fame the Legend of Good Women and Troilus and Criseyde he is best known today for The Canterbury Tales. Chaucer championed the use of the vernacular Middle English at a time when the dominant literary languages in England were French and Latin. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries he was printed more than any other English author and he was the first English author to have his works printed in single-volume collected editions. Bifolium pages approximately 415 x 285 mm 16¼ x 11¼ inches 1-2 and 15-16 comprising 2 illustrated pages and 2 text pages printed in Chaucer type with side-notes in red 2 wood-engraved illustrations designed by Edward Burne-Jones wood-engraved borders and one very large initial plus 5 large and 7 smaller initials by William Morris folio Proof of one of the most famous pages in printing history with variations in the typesetting from the final version. A shallow crease due to folding the sheets to house in a another Kelmscott book a little pale foxing mostly to margins edges slightly dusty otherwise very good condition see attached images. Inspired by the hand presses of the fifteenth century Morris established the Kelmscott Press to publish books of his own design and to revive the quality achieved by the pioneers of printing. The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer represents Morris's most ambitious undertaking as a printer and designer as well as his swansong; the four-year undertaking was completed just a few months before his death. Morris supervised every detail of production including the choice of ink and paper the design of the type and the use of ornaments and illustration. His lifelong friend the celebrated painter Edward Burne-Jones drew 87 magnificent full-page woodcut illustrations. "If we live to finish it" Burne-Jones wrote "it will be like a pocket cathedral - so full of design and I think Morris the greatest master of ornament in the world." The edition features the portraits of Urry and Chaucer and twenty-six "equestrian portraits representing the twenty-four tellers of tales including the Plowman…" - Reimer. Printed by William Bowyer; his records show three sizes printed: 1000 copies demy; 240 royal; 10 writing royal. This copy measures 40 cm tall. "John Urry produced the first edition of the complete works of Chaucer in a Latin font published posthumously in 1721. Included were several tales according to the editors for the first time printed a biography of Chaucer a glossary of old English words and testimonials of author writers concerning Chaucer dating back to the 16th century. According to A. S. G Edwards "This was the first collected edition of Chaucer to be printed in roman type. The text of Urry's edition has often been criticized by subsequent editors for its frequent conjectural emendations mainly to make it conform to his sense of Chaucer's metre. The justice of such criticisms should not obscure his achievement. Quarter leather and cloth with gilt illustration on front cover red spine label folio 34 cm. unpaginated c800 pp. From the introduction: "The present volume sets out to provide as simply as possible a conspectus of the works of Chaucer as they appeared to readers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Few manuscripts were available but the works appeared in a series of volumes which until the end of the century were not so very unlike in size appearance and content the great manuscript volumes of the fifteenth century. In 1532 appeared the first serious attempt to gather together all of Chaucer's productions The Workes of Geffray Chaucer etc. a folio edited by William Thynne printed by Thomas Godfiray a facsimile of which constitutes the bulk of the present volume. The sixteenth century editions are the subject of the present facsimile. The 1532 edition is the basis and additional material from the editions of 1542 1561 1598 and 1602 is included in that order. The edition of 1550 did not add any material and is therefore not represented. The present facsimile is thus not representative of any single copy after Thynne but makes available all that appeared in Chaucer's name from 1532 to 1602 and that was known as Chaucer's to readers including Sidney Spenser Shakespeare Milton Dryden and Pope essentially in the form in which they knew it.
