"Philip Guedalla 18891944 was a historian and essayist always more interested in men than movements. His The Second Empire 1922 was a study of the emperor rather than of the empire who made solid contributions to knowledge in titles such as Gladstone and Palmerston 1928 and The Queen and Mr. Gladstone 1933" - ODNB. Bound in cloth with gilt lettering and gilt and embossed decoration and unclipped dustwrappers. Externally smart. There is only some slight wear to the extremities with just some slight bumping. Dustwrapper are sound with come chipping the edges and to the head and tail of the spine resulting in some loss. Some closed tears to each wrap with some slight discolouration to the spines and the occasional foxing. Internally firmly bound. Disraeli turned towards literature after his financial disaster motivated in part by a desperate need for money and brought out his first novel Vivian Grey in 1826. The Young Duke was his second novel first published in 1831. Disraeli's writing is generally interesting and his books teem with striking thoughts shrewd maxims and brilliant phrases which stick in the memory; on the other hand he is often artificial extravagant and turgid. Critic William Kuhn argued that much of his fiction can be read as "the memoirs he never wrote" revealing the inner life of a politician for whom the norms of Victorian public life appeared to represent a social straitjacket particularly with regard to his allegedly "ambiguous sexuality." James Grant 18221887 was a Scottish author. Grant was born in Edinburgh Scotland and was a distant relation of Sir Walter Scott. He was a prolific author. Many of his 56 novels are about important characters and events in Scottish history. In 1853 he founded the National Association for the Vindication of Scottish Rights. In a half crushed morocco binding. Externally sound though somewhat rubbed. The hinges are strained but holding firm. Internally firmly bound bright and clean throughout. This novel stemmed from Disraeli's interested in the Chartist movement which was a working-class political reformist movement seeking universal male suffrage however it failed as a parliamentary movement. Disraeli was deeply interested in helping the working class living conditions.Volume X 'Tancred' follows Lord Montacute a young hero who is destined to live the life of a member of the British ruling class. However he decides to retraces the steps of his Crusader ancestors to the Holy Land.Volume XI 'Lothair' follows a young wealthy orphaned nobleman who finds himself the centre of attention of three women of different religions.Volume XII 'Endymion' followed by 'Falconet' is a romance novel following the rising Tory politicians William Pitt Ferrars.Disraeli served twice as the Prime Minister providing the groundwork for what would become the modern Conservative Party. He was a significant Prime Minister due to the fact that he was the only Prime Minister who was Jewish by birth.Each work with an introduction by Philip Guedalla.
