On return to England from India in 1840 he was appointed as assistant secretary to HM Treasury and served to 1859 during both the Irish famine and the Highland Potato Famine of 18461857 in Scotland. In Ireland he administered famine relief whilst in Scotland he was closely associated with the work of the Central Board for Highland Relief. His inaction and personal negative attitude towards the Irish people are widely believed to have slowed relief for the famine. unknown

He served as chairman of the inaugural meeting of the National Union of Conservative and Constitutional Associations in November 1867. He was not re-elected at the 1868 general election. After the Conservative defeat of that year Benjamin Disraeli entrusted him with the reorganisation of the party machinery and in five years of hard work he paved the way for the Conservative success at the general election of 1874. unknown

Housed in a brown cloth clamshell box. Complete first editions are uncommon especially in the original boards. Originally published anonymously ostensibly by a so-called "man of fashion" part 1 caused a considerable sensation in London society. Contemporary reviewers suspicious of the numerous solecisms contained within the text eventually identified the young Disraeli who did not move in high society as the author. Disraeli continued the tale in a second volume also of 1826 and three subsequent volumes in 1827. The form in which Vivian Grey is published now is the revised 1853 edition which was severely expurgated and according to critic Wendy Burton lost much of the charm and freshness of the 1826 edition. The book is a frequent touchstone for discussions of Disraeli's political and literary career. Vivian Grey is often written about as a cornerstone work of the "fashionable" or "silver fork" school of fiction but it is also the first work in the genre of the political novel as later practiced by Trollope Meredith Eliot Wells and Mrs. Humphrey Ward. Two 12mo. volumes untrimmed. 212;225 pp. Publisher's advertisements are bound-in at the start of the first volume and at the end of the second volume 4 and 8 pp. respectively. Among the titles on offer are Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Jane Austen's Emma which is listed as "in press." Contemporary publisher's binding: dun paper boards brick linen back with paper label. Early and possibly contemporary ink ownership Geo. A. Botts and a mid-twentieth century bookseller's label Claitor's of Baton Rouge LA on front pastedown in each volume. Bindings show general rubbing and soiling are sunned on spines and the labels are abraded and nearly illegible. Volume 1 is missing the rear fly-leaf and a blank and one leaf p. 103/4 is torn but without loss. Text is quite clean but for a couple of foxed leaves in each volume. A very good and sound copy in contemporary bindings. Rare. unknown books

London 1865. unbound. 3 pages front and back on "Grosvenor Gate" letterhead each two-page spread measuring 5.5 x 6.75 inches London May 1 1865. In this gracious letter the Prime Minister declines a dinner invitation in part: ".I am very sorry that I am engaged on Friday with the Earl of Shaftesbury & therefore cannot have the great honor of dining with you." Signed "Disraeli." Several folds and paper mounting remnants on the back of the blank page; otherwise fine.<br/><br/> unknown books
