The text of Homer here probably derives from an edition of his works printed in 1528 at Antwerp by J. Grapheum with Josse Valerus adding to the previous editorial work of Lorenzo Valla Raffaele Maffei and Aldo Manuzio. Manuzio was also the publisher of the first edition of the work by Quintus in 1504 under the title Quinti Calabri derelictorum ab Homero libri XIV. Venetiis: in aedibus Aldi. It is known both as the Trojan Epic and Posthomerica and is the earliest narration of the events comprising the Trojan war. The inscription "Ex libris Gabrielis Bergonhon" in this copy denotes the ownership of Gabriel Bergonhon 1633-1717 judge of the royal and common court of Puy in France. The inscription is very similar to one at the top of the title-page of a work from 1652 held by a library in Toulouse France <https://tolosana.univ-toulouse.fr/fr/notice/075575574>. Two earlier ownership signatures are also present on the first title-page and both of these earlier signatures appear to be in the same hand and quite likely renderings of the same name. They are somewhat indistinct however. The forename however looks much like Jacques and the surname may be Bergonhon or the same name in an alternate spelling Bergounhoux or Bergonhoux in which case this would very likely be either Gabriel Bergonhon's father Jacques Bergonhon who was also a lawyer an "avocat" or his elder relative Jacques Bergounhoux the apothecary an "apothicaire" who flourished in the early to mid sixteenth century. Like Gabriel they lived in the region of Puy in France. The gilt dolphin motif in the centre of the upper and lower covers looks to be the stylized dolphin figure found in the coat of arms of the Dauphin of France <https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/64/Coat_of_Arms_of_the_Dauphin_of_France.svg> though here the dolphin wears a three-pointed crown as if to emphasize the royal reference. Multiple fleurs-de-lys seen here at the corners of the covers are also prominent in the Dauphin's coat of arms. The inscriptions of the Bergonhons plus the binding bearing the motifs of the Dauphin make for a distinguished and rather mysterious provenance. Did for instance the Dauphin have the volume bound and gilt as a gift for his apothecary in gratitude for a balm that soothed a wound Further research may narrow the possibilities. The funeral sermons of Johannes de Sancto Geminiano 1260-1332 clearly still had an audience in the 16th century death having long occupied a conspicuous place in one's mind as it surely does today. Given the religious flux of Europe at the time it was in any case safer to publish an approved preacher from the past than one living who could potentially stir controversy. ¶ With an exceptionally precise index even by today's standards listing hundreds of subject headings. A hallmark of early modern life sermons are "a record of temperament taste and convention and an especially valuable record at a time when church-going is widespread and mass media are unknown" Bayley. Since reflections on death are invariably reflections on life there is perhaps no better record than funeral sermons. As such the present index offers an illuminating roster of what mattered to people: friendship confession love prayer sin purgatory time living well and of course sex see especially: "appetitus coitus insatiabilis" and "coitus nulla satietas". In fact we learn that sex was the primary cause of death "prima causa est nimius usus veneris"; fol. 4v. ¶ The sermon was one of the bestselling genres of the age a consideration perfectly epitomized by the title woodcut: a preacher stands before a large congregation his listeners rapt with attention while the cut leaves an empty space in which any preacher's name could be set with type. This factotum quality would have allowed it be redeployed for any sermon collection for which there was a seemingly limitless supply and demand. ¶ We find no copies outside Europe. --- PROVENANCE: Scattered early markings including a few marginalia indicating a reader's preoccupation with death no surprise given the subject: "vita brevis" fol. 4v and "vita terminata" fol. 6r for example. ¶ With extensive signs of youthful employment in an early Spanish hand including an appeal or curse on leaf 2cross4v: "Si este libro seperdier como suel aconacer suplico …" The beginning of this inscription also appears on leaf E8v—coincidentally the last page of a detached signature—with evidence of a similar inscription on what remains of the final blank leaf. Nearly every verso from fol. 71 through 104 contains a handwritten litany of holy names including various saints and many variations of "La Virgen." An attempt to copy a decorative initial on the second leaf. ¶ Small pressed plant between fol. 56 and 57. --- CONDITION: Contemporary limp parchment likely Spanish; title in contemporary ink on spine and front cover; spine lined with manuscript waste. Title-page printed in red and black with woodcut vignette and architectural border; floral criblé initials throughout. ¶ Lacking the last two leaves the final a blank the penultimate with a sermon and colophon; signature E detached but present; dampstaining throughout in the lower margin affecting the last several lines of text with additional dampstaining to the last few leaves; title leaf worn at the edges with a little loss to the top of the border due in part to careless trimming.
