Jahrhunderts sind die Vorläufer der heutigen Fernsehsenen. Indem nun zum ersten Mal eine Geschichte des Zeitungsromans vorgelegt wird, kommt auch die Vorgeschichte der modernen Massenmedien in einem wichtigen Teilbereich ans Licht. Dies geschieht im vorliegenden Band sowohl in institutionsgeschichtlicher als auch in textinterpretatorischer Hinsicht, und zwar anhand von vier ausgewählten Publikationsjahrgängen: 1844, 1860, 1884 und 1912. Allein in diesen Schnittjahren sind in den Pariser Tageszeitungen rund 1000 Fortsetzungsromane erschienen. Diese Fortsetzungsromane werden im vorliegenden Band erstens quantitativ erfaßt und statistisch ausgewertet. Zweitens wird der Funktionszusammenhang von Feuilletonroman und Trägerzeitung untersucht. Drittens wird der Spielraum des Feuilletonromans synchron nach thematischen Schwerpunkten und feuilletonistischen Subgenera umschrieben. Diachron wird das Weiterleben oder Verschwinden, die Umfunktiomerung oder Ersetzung der Subgenera verfolgt. Daraus ergibt sich auch eine Mentalitätsgeschichte des Feuilletonromans. - Eine vollständige, nach Zeitungen und Autoren geordnete Liste sämtlicher in den Schnittjahren und darüber hinaus der zwischen 1860 und 1870 erschienenen Feuilletontexte beschließt den Band, der insofern auch die erste zuverlässige Bibliographie zum Gegenstand liefert. Alles in allem: kein weiterer Beitrag zur 'Trivialliteratur'-Diskussion, sondern ein Versuch, die historische Bedeutung der frühen Massenliteratur durch philologisches Quellenstudium zu rekonstruieren. Also includes, “Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Art and Architecture, ” and “Kingston to Newson to Blake. ” Includes facsimile of a beautiful Hebrew book from Naples. “The Jews in Italy, Spain and Portugal were the first to make use of the newly-invented art of Gutenberg for the production of Hebrew books. Hebrew printing presses were set up in various parts of those countries, and produced virtually all known Hebrew books printed during the fifteenth century. Naples, the largest and most beautiful city of Lower Italy, became an early and quite important center of Hebrew printing, second only to Soncino, even as it had become a large center of Jewish life. Though of short duration, the Neapolitan was perhaps the most cosmopolitan Jewish community in the fifteenth century. With the exception of Soncino, none of the cities in Spain, Portugal or Italy can claim the production of as many Hebrew incunabula as were printed in Naples in less than a decade. ” The periodical was published monthly from 1897-1977. ‎4 Vols., 4to, 11 coloured plates, 97 monochrome (some folding), printed wrappers, upper cover of the first part detached, 1412 lots. The preface notes that "The books and manuscripts from Clumber, the most important to appear at auction in this country since the Holford sales nearly ten years ago, are probably less well known to collectors than any library of similar consequence." The fourth Duke of Newcastle (1785-1851) apparently was principally responsible for the formation of the library, which included a First Folio. Lot 1 was the prize of the sale: the Hours of Isabel of Brittany, otherwise known as the Lamoignon Hours. The collection's three Caxtons (lot 10-12) included a fine copy of 'Reynard the Fox'. Symour de Ricci provided a handlist of the manuscripts in the collection, which was used by Sotheby's in their preparation of the catalogue. From the library of Pierre Ber?s.‎
