First edition. Jacques-Georges Chauffepié (9 November 1702, Leeuwarden - 5 July 1786, Amsterdam) was an 18th-century French biographer and calvinist minister and preacher. He added some 1400 articles to Bayle's dictionary. He spend many years preparing the work and showed an enormous learning. It was, together with Bayle's dictionary, one of the earlier dictionaries in Europe published in vernacular to make an impact on the European world of letters."The project of a supplement to the dictionary of Bayle was conceived at the death of the philosopher, but was not executed. After some English people of letters gave an English translation of the book by Bayle in 40 vol, with considerable additions, it was proposed to Chauffepié to translate into French the additions made in England. These additions consisted either in addition to articles by Bayle, either new articles, He devoted many years to this work, and made himself new additions and new articles. Out of nearly fourteen hundred items found in his dictionary, more than six hundred, almost all English, are translated without additions from Chauffepié; about two hundred and eighty are reworked by him, some five hundred items are entirely his. Chauffepié has neither the piquancy nor cynicism of Bayle. He meets the character of Minister which he was invested with. He sometimes straightens English authors, and shows great erudition. Only in a work of this scope can we afford the explanatory notes of the text, or dissertations on some curious history or literature points" (Wikipedia).

Grenoble, Allier, 1890. 18 pp. "Tiré à 150 exemplaires". - Extremely rare complete series - and a charmingly bibliophilic copy - of this short-lived bibliographical journal evincing the development of a small, provincial circle of bibliophiles and bibliographers in the Dauphiné region of France. Evidently spearheaded by Chaper, who authored many of the first issues, the articles suggest a capable degree of scholarship and later issues are even elaborately-illustrated. Some of the earliest parts were issued in runs as small as 50 copies, according to the versos of the title-pages. - Camille-Eugène Chaper (1827-90) was a highly decorated military officer who, following his retirement from public life in 1875, devoted himself to his twin passions of regional bibliography and the management of mining operations. His collection of Dauphinoise imprints and authors (i.e., those of the former province of Dauphiné, capital Grenoble) was unrivalled, and he donated much material to the Bibliothèque de Grenoble. It is also recorded that he was particularly scrupulous about the provenance of his books and manuscripts, and if in any doubt about the propriety of an offering, he had the courage to steer clear of it. - The present example was evidently compiled with care by an admirer of Chaper - quite likely one of the authors mentioned above. OCLC shows a few US holdings of individual parts (eg. #9, on the printed playing-cards of the Grenoble region), but as far as we can tell, only the NYPL holds a complete run. From the Foreword: "The mid-nineteenth century was productive of many strange movements and personalities but it is doubtful if those years of America's ferment ever brought forth any character more weirdly dramatic than James Jesse Strang. With startling disregard for democratic law and process he was crowned king over his Beaver Island domain and just as autocratically he enforced the laws and edicts which went with his monarchy. His followers accepted him as king by divine right; prophet seer and mouthpiece-of-God. James Jesse Strang had joined the Mormon Church five months before Joseph Smith the Mormon prophet was murdered at Carthage jail Illinois. With the tragic death of Joseph Smith Strang attempted to move himself in as Smith's successor. In this he failed to reckon with Brigham Young who summarily excommuicated him and branded him fraud and imposter. But this did not stop Strang. While Brigham Young led the church out of Illinois persecution to Utah Strang led every other Mormon who would listen to him to his own 'promised land' at Voree Wisconsin. There he set himself up as the new prophet dug up a fresh set of ancient metal plates translated them with the miraculous help of heavenly beings into The Book of the Law of the Lord and proceeded to issue 'revelations' on every conceivable subject. In 1882 Charles K. Backus wrote this exciting study of James Jesse Strang under the title of an American King. In it he traces the rise of Strang at Voree his establishment of the Beaver Island 'kingdom' the unbelievable oddities of this chapter of American history and the final end of Strang."
