Unwrapped in plastic. ; Poiesis nasce dal desiderio di fornire a quanti s'interessano allo studio della poesia greca da Omero a Nonno di Panopoli uno strumento d'informazione che, consentendo una prima selezione del materiale da utilizzare, faciliti approfondimenti e ulteriori ricerche. Sono passate in rassegna, con cadenza annuale, tutte le pubblicazioni di ambito antichistico (libri, riviste, dissertazioni, miscellanee) che - in toto o in parte - trattino di autori e temi di poesia greca. Di ogni contributo, dal volume alla nota critico-testuale, si rende conto attraverso una scheda articolata e ampia: il lettore può così avere una comprensione chiara del contenuto di ogni singolo studio. La scelta di delimitare il campo alla poesia trova la sua giustificazione nella distinzione storica tra prosa e versi, propria del sistema letterario della Grecia antica, in cui il canone dei generi si fonda sulla differenza delle forme. Poiesis si propone dunque di unire in un unico strumento di lavoro le caratteristiche migliori delle due tradizionali tipologie bibliografiche: la completezza dell'informazione, propria delle bibliografie elencative, e una adeguata esposizione del contenuto di ogni singolo studio, propria delle più ampie schede di lettura. I singoli autori e settori della letteratura poetica greca sono affidati alla cura di un redattore competente sull'argomento. The origin of Poiesis springs from the desire to provide those who cherish an interest in the study of Greek and Byzantine poetry with a tool to search for relevant information, enabling readers to undertake a preliminary selection of material to be utilized and also facilitating in-depth study and further research. The Journal offers a yearly survey of all publications in the field of antiquities (books, journals, dissertations, miscellanies) that are totally or partly devoted to authors and themes of Greek poetry. A fairly extensive article is dedicated to each cited publication, from book-length works to brief notes of text criticism, thereby enabling readers to gain a clear understanding of the content of the individual studies. The decision to restrict the scope of inquiry to poetry is motivated by the historical distinction between prose and verse that embodies the essence of the literary system in ancient Greece, where the canon of the genera is founded on the difference between forms. Poiesis thus aims to combine in a single working tool the best characteristics of the two traditional bibliographic typologies: completeness of information, which is an intrinsic feature of bibliographical listings, and adequate description of the contents of each single study, an intrinsic feature of wider-ranging interpretative surveys. Editorial responsibility for individual authors and sectors of Greek poetic literature is entrusted to sub-editors with a specific background in the given subjects. First edition, 3 vols., bound in 4, 4to (279 x 185 mm), ONE OF 100 COPIES PRINTED ON THICK AND LARGE PAPER WITH EXTRA PLATES, [4], xxv, [7], 462,lxxix, [1]; [2], 555, [1]; [2], 298; [2], 299-622, lxiipp., with the author's wood-engraved device on each title-page, a wood engraving of the elaborately-quartered coat of arms of the Roxburghe Club on the dedication page, 85 engraved plates ((including the private plate of 'Diana de Poictiers' in vol. 2, which was apparently destroyed after only 50 copies had been printed, and a proof of the 'Prater' plate in vol. 3), 62 illustrations printed on fine and thin "India" paper and mounted on the text leaves, 55 other illustrations in the text, with the additional sixty engraved plates on 52 leaves from Lewis' Series of Groups bound in at the appropriate places as designated by Lewis in his 'Directions to the binder', contemporary notes in pencil to several endpapers and a few within the text, text and plates have staining of varying degrees, pale stain to many lower margins, a little damage to endpapers where bookplates have been removed, full red hard grain red morocco,,covers waterstained, spines lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. Unfortunately this handsome large paper copy has suffered from water damage sometime in the past, additional photographs are available upon request. This set with the additional set of etchings on india paper by George Lewis, of a classic work of the utmost importance for its wealth of eye-witness information and anecdotes about printed books, manuscripts, buildings, other artefacts and people, both from past centuries and from the author's own day, for the extraordinary collection of illustrations, mostly drawn during the tour itself, and finally as a sumptuous piece of book production. As soon as the book appeared, leading scholars derided Dibdin for his lack of scholarship, especially concerning early manuscripts and printed books. But one must distinguish between the extensive and extremely useful information about things and people Dibdin saw during his 1818 tour, and his own interpretations and conclusions, which now serve only as a window to the attitudes of the time. Dibdin's enthusiasm, readable style and entertaining anecdotes, moreover, caught the mood of his age, making the book extremely popular and influential. Lewis' A Series of Groups... was intended to accompany Dibdin's Tour but was rejected by Dibdin as unworthy of his book. First edition, viii, [2], 117pp., with engraved title-page, a little foxed and stained, final line of imprint cropped, text occasional spotted and lightly browned, marbled endpapers, cont. full straight-grained red morocco, gilt border on sides, flat spine, gilt, extremities a little rubbed. Dibdin's rare suppressed first separate publication, being preceded only by his contribution to the 'European Magazine'. Dibdin did not think much of his first effort as he emphatically stated in his 'Bibliomania' "I struck off 500 copies, and was glad to get rid of half of them as waste paper; the remaining half have been partly destroyed by my own hands... Tre volumi di cm. 25, pp. (4) xxv (7) 462 lxxix (1); (4) 555 (1); (4) 622 lxii. Con moltissime belle incisioni nel testo (anche a colori) e 83 tavole in rame fuori testo. Presenti le veline protettive. Solida legatura di foggia ottocentesca (ma d'epoca posteriore) in mezza pelle con punte, dorsi a nervi con titoli in oro. Qualche fioritura alle tavole che in pochi casi risultano appena rifilate, peraltro esemplare ben conservato. Prima edizione di quest’opera, l’unica del tempo che tratta in modo ampio un tema così affascinante: la ricerca bibliografica. L’autore si dilunga infatti nella descrizioni di tutte le sue scoperte in tema di libri antichi, ricercati e trovati durante il suo viaggio. Tratta delle biblioteche visitate, dei mercati di libri antichi, elenca manoscritti e incunaboli e impreziosisce il racconto con aneddoti divertenti.

Tre volumi di cm. 20,5, pp. (4) xlii (2) 421 (1); (4) iv, 428; (4) 481 (1). Con antiporta illustrata a ciascun volume, tavole e molte figure incise nel testo (anche in rosso). Bella ed elegante legatura del tempo (seconda metà dell'800) in pieno marocchino rosso, dorsi a nervi con titoli e fregi, piatti inquadrati da vari ordini di filetti in oro, dentelles interne e tagli superiori dorati. Legatura: bound by Ramage London. Esemplare ben conservato e con legatura in ottimo stato di conservazione. Seconda edizione di quest’opera, l’unica del tempo che tratta in modo ampio un tema così affascinante: la ricerca bibliografica. L’autore si dilunga infatti nella descrizioni di tutte le sue scoperte in tema di libri antichi, ricercati e trovati durante il suo viaggio. Tratta delle biblioteche visitate, dei mercati di libri antichi, elenca manoscritti e incunaboli e impreziosisce il racconto con aneddoti divertenti. Esemplare impreziosito da una legatura assai decorativa eseguita da John Ramage, allievo di Lortic ed attivo a Parigi ed a Londra (dal 1860).
