‎Commendable and voluminous bibliography which lists for the first time all publications by Charles Carrington in a systematic way. In the English and French language area, Carrington was one of the most important publishers for erotica at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Besides erotic works, which were often published clandestine, he also published literary and ethnological works and books on the history of manners. The first and most extensive part, chapter A of the bibliography, lists all titles by author or anonymous subject titles. Beside title descriptions, mostly taken from original copies, there are also extensive quotations from catalogues, advertisements and reviews. Chapter B lists all titles, which were offered in Carrington's sales catalogues, but obviously were not published by him. New editions and translations of books originally published by Carrington are listed in chapter C. Biographical material is grouped in chapter D. The quoted catalogues and advertising material is listed in chapter K. The appendix finally lists all publications which are ascribed by Peter Mendes (Clandestine Erotic Fiction in England) to be originally publications by Carrington. There is also a list of manuscripts previously owned by C. Scheiner in New York and a list of the most important publications by Alfred Allinson. With index for titles, names, annotations, announcements for titles, headings (titles of series), collections, printers, information concerning the publishing house and different addresses of Carrington. The numerous illustrations at the end depict title pages, illustrations, text pages etc. This bibliography is marked by accuracy, great complexity and diversification. Whenever possible, the author followed the principle of autopsy. Because of the wealth of material, a quick check is not always easy but will cause no difficulties for the trained bibliographer and bibliography-lover.‎

‎In dieser sehr verdienstvollen und aussergewöhnlich umfangreichen Bibliographie werden erstmals systematisch und umfassend die Veröffentlichungen des Charles Carrington Verlags verzeichnet. Carrington gehörte zu den bedeutensten und aktivsten Erotica-Verlegern im englischen aber auch französischen Sprachraum Ende des 19. und Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. Neben den zahlreichen erotischen Werken veröffentlichte er aber auch viele sittengeschichtliche, ethnologische und literarische Werke. Der erste und umfangreichste Teil, das Kapitel A der Bibliographie, ist eine Primärbibliographie, alphabetisch nach Verfasser bzw. anonymen Sachtiteln geordnet. Neben den möglichst - und zum allergrössten Teil - vom Original angefertigten Titelaufnahmen werden aber auch Katalogeintragungen, Anzeigen, Besprechungen und Werbetexte zu dem entsprechenden Titel in extenso zitiert. Im Kapitel B werden jene Titel verzeichnet, die in Carringtons (Verlags-)Katalogen zwar erschienen und die er in grösserer Zahl vertrieb, die aber offensichtlich nicht von ihm publiziert wurden. Neuausgaben und Übersetzungen ursprünglicher Carrington Titel sind im Kapitel C zusammengetragen. Kapitel D widmet sich biographischen Materialien. Die zitierten Kataloge und Werbematerialien aus dem Hause Carrington sind im Kapitel K zusammengefasst. Der Anhang nun verzeichnet mutmassliche Veröffentlichungen Carringtons nach Peter Mendes (Clandestine Erotic Fiction in England), gibt eine Übersicht über Manuskripte aus dem ehemaligen Besitz von C. Scheiner und eine Liste der wichtigsten ermittelten Veröffentlichungen von Alfred Allinson. Erschlossen ist die Bibliographie durch ein umfangreiches Register zu Titeln, Namen, Annotationen, Titelanzeigen, Obertiteln (Serien), Sammlungen, Druckern, Verlagsangaben und Adressen Carringtons. Die zahlreichen Abbildungen am Schluss des Bandes zeigen Titelseiten, Illustrationen, Textseiten etc. Diese Bibliographie zeichnet sich aus durch Genauigkeit, grosse Komplexität und Materialfülle sowie dem Arbeitsprinzip der Autopsie, woimmer dies möglich war. Dass dadurch manchmal nicht gleich der sekundenschnelle Zugriff auf einen Titel möglich ist, ist selbstredend. Dem etwas geübten Bibliographie-Benutzer wird sie aber keine Probleme bereiten und dem Bibliographie-Liebhaber viel Spass machen. ------------------- English description available on request.
