Caetano de Santo António d. 1730 an apothecary of the Monastery of Santa Cruz of the city of Coimbra who upon publication of the second volume was working at Lisbon in the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora. "The Pharmacopeia Lusitana shows how important the convent pharmacy was at that time in Portugal. The Portuguese religious apothecaries were very knowledgeable on pharmaceutical matters" Pita. With a few manuscript annotations in the margins. X 1 1 blank 387 1 blank; IV 54 pp.Fourth edition of the official pharmacopoeia of Prussia attributed to the German naturalist and botanist Heinrich Friedrich Link 1767-1851 who wrote the preface. The work opens with a preface and a brief section on the metric system used in the book. The main text is divided into two parts the first covering medicines that should always be available in any shop the second containing medicines that need not always be kept in stock each part dividing the medicines into simples and compounds. It closes with an index in Latin and German. The first edition 1799 was based on the last edition of the Dispensatorium regium et electorale Borusso-Brandenburgicum published at Berlin in 1781. The appendix contains some additional medicines and additional information on already medicines included referring to the page numbers of the pharmacopoeia.Slightly foxed. This pharmacopoeia was only published in Dutch unlike other Dutch pharmacopoeia that would appear only in Latin or in a later Dutch translation. The included privilege notes that a copy should have been given to the Leiden University Library but there are no copies of this edition recorded in their catalogue.Boards slightly rubbed some minor damage to the hinges the four preliminary leaves partly detached and some spots throughout. 10 130 14 pp.Second copy located of the 1736 reissue of the already very rare third and last edition 1735 of the Rotterdam pharmacopoeia published only in Dutch while other pharmacopoeia published in the Netherlands appeared only in Latin or first in Latin and then in translation. It includes the frontispiece by Jan Luyken showing the interior of an apothecary originally published in the 1682 Pharmacopoea Amstelredamensis and here still bearing the “Nicolaas de Wit” imprint of the 1735 issue of the Rotterdam pharmacopoea.With the bookplate of the notable Dutch bookcollector Bob Luza 1893-1980. Some minor foxing to the title-page but otherwise in very good condition and wholly untrimmed with the bolts partly unopened. It was not widely distributed in the country and the need for a more complete compilation led to court physician A. Bäck being commissioned to compose a new pharmacopoeia. He was assisted by Linnaeus who primarily contributed to the section on the effects and uses of medicines. This document Materia medica contained some 380 simple substances the section on “Praeparata et Composita” some 400 chemical preparations - as well as a list of substances to induce vomiting emeticorum compounds containing mercury opium and an alphabetical index.
