[MARKHAM (Gervase)]
The Art of Archerie. Shewing how it is most necessary in these times for this kingdome, both in Peace and War, and how it may be done without charge to the Country, trouble to the People, or any hinderance to necessary Occasions. Also, of the Discipline, the Postures, an whatsoever else is necessarie for the attayning to the Art.
First edition, small 8vo (131 x 81 mm), [24], 112, 117-172pp., (i.e. 168pp., as 113-16 omitted in the pagination), mounted woodcut frontispiece of a male archer, early ownership signature to title partially erased, upper corner of D1 restored with a loss of a few letters which have been added in ms. blank lower corner of M3 repaired, occasional light soiling and staining, marbled endpapers, eighteenth-century green morocco, tooled in gilt, overall a very good copy. Written when he was sixty-six years old, this is probably the last book which Markham wrote, and is one of his scarcest. "The practical instruction which he proceeds to give to the would-be-archer, of the bow and its use, the shooting-glove, the string, the shaft, the steel of the arrow, the feather, and the arrow-head, is reminiscent of Asham and may indeed be derived from his Toxophilus."?Poynter. Only two other copies have appeared at auction over the last 70 years, the Macclesfield copy sold by Sotheby's 14th April 2005 lot 1311 ?6,600 and the Fox Pointe copy sold by Forum Auctions 10th July 2019 lot 104 ?5000. [Pillone Library - Vecellio, Cesare]. Feyerabend, Sigmund (ed.).
Annales sive historiae rerum Belgicarum. Frankfurt am Main, (Georg Rab the Elder for) Sigmund Feyerabend, 1580.
Folio (265 x 388 mm). 2 parts in one volume. 427, (21); 187, (1) pp. Titles within elaborate allegorical woodcut border signed by Jost Amman. Woodcut headpieces, initials and Feyerabend publisher's mark signed by Tobias Stimmer at end part I. Contemporary full vellum, remnants of four alum-tawed leather ties, spine with four raised bands, headbands in grey, white, and yellow. Stored in custom-made half morocco box. First edition of this collection of the leading histories of the Low Countries, edited by Feyerabend. Fore-edge painting by Cesare Vecellio, depicting a scholar seated at a desk overlooking a landscape with the title "ANNA/LES" below; top and tail edges decorated with abstract line designs. - A rare item from the celebrated library of Dr. Odorico Pillone and his father. Late in the 16th century, Odorico invited Vecellio (first cousin once removed of the master painter Titian, under whom he trained) to decorate a number of books in his library with fore-edge paintings, thereby establishing the earliest known private collection of such paintings. As was Vecellio's preferred style, the painting here is of a scholar, brightly dressed in red and a black hat, centered on the fore-edge and additionally visible on the closed edge. - The histories contained are by Jacques Meyer (Part I, Flanders), Adrian Baarland (II, Brabant), G. Geldenhouwer (II, Holland), Jacques Marchand (II, Flanders), and L. Guicciardini (II, in Latin); also, shorter texts by Philip Galle and G. Candidus on the then-current situation. - Corners insignificantly bumped and rubbed, some worming to edges and spine, hinges and endpapers (with chipping to head of spine). Binding shows some dampstaining and soiling. A few tears to flyleaves. Internally generally clean with occasional insignificant foxing and some dampstaining, chiefly confined to margins, as well as minor text block edgewear. Overall a very good example with the fore-edge painting a little worn but still bright. - Provenance: Odorico Pillone (1503-93); Casteldardo estate (ca. 17th-19th centuries); Bayolle of Venice (early 19th century); Paolo Maresio Bazolle (1874); Sir Thomas Brooke (1830-1908; his bookplate to front pastedown); Humphrey Brooke (early 20th century); Pierre Berès (ca. 1947; his bookplate to front pastedown); Jeff Weber Rare Books; Randall J. Moskovitz, MD, Memphis, Tennessee (1990); acquired from the sale of his estate. VD 16, F 897. Berès, Bibliothèque Pillone, no. 133. Berès, Un groupe de livres Pillone, no. 1. [Reinhard I, Graf zu Solms-Lich].
Besatzung. Ein kurtzer bericht, wie Stätt, Schlösser oder Flecken, mit kriegs volck sollen besetzt sein, daß sie sich vor dem Feinde erhalten mögen. Frankfurt, (Feyerabend & Hüter, 1564).
Folio (189 x 290 mm). XVI, (1) pp. With large woodcut title illustration and 6 woodcut illustrations in the text, all by Jost Amman. Modern marbled boards with cloth spine, new endpapers. All edges red. Second independent edition of this "short account of the manner how towns, castles, and other places are to be garrisoned with soldiers in such a way that they may withstand the enemy". Formerly attributed erroneously to Fronsperger's "Kriegßbuch", from which Amman's fine title woodcut was taken, the treatise was first published privately in 1560 as the 8th volume of the monumental military encyclopedia by the imperial field marshal and fortification architect Reinhard count Solms (1491-1562); Feyerabend issued it separately in 1563. The text woodcuts show siege engines and instruments. - Leaves XIII and XIIII transposed. Colophon leaf repaired at foot and spotted. - Provenance: the library of Heinrich Stiebel, Frankfurt (his bookplate on pastedown, numbered 5272). Later in the collection of Thomas Fremantle, 3rd Baron Cottesloe (1862-1956), commander of the Territorial Army and president of the Society for Army History Research (purchased from Sotheran's, December 1936). [Margarita philosophica.] Aepitoma omnis phylosophiae. Alias margarita phylosophica tractans de omni genere scibili. Cum additionibus: que in aliis non habentur. (Strasbourg, Johann [Reinhard, gen.] Grüninger, 23 February 1504).
4to. [287] ff. With title woodcut, 8 pp. of musical notes, and numerous (32 large, 12 almost full-page, and hundreds of small) woodcuts in the text (wanting the woodcut map and the folding plate on musical theory). Contemp. wooden boards with blindstamped pigskin spine and one central brass clasp. The first encyclopedic work in modern European history. The first Strasbourg edition, a revision of the Freiburg first edition published the previous year. In the manner of a dialogue between teacher and student, the book discusses the sciences and liberal arts, including music (with notes), medicine, geometry, surveying, etc. Grüninger modified several woodcuts from the first edition and added others; he also incorporated a brief Hebrew grammar by Conrad Pellicanus, making this the first Strasbourg-printed book to include Hebrew type (cf. Schmidt). - Among the illustrations are a map of the world on f. c6r and many charming miniature woodcuts in the margins. Occasionally, details of the initials (F11r) and woodcuts (e.g., F18v, c2v [salamander], and c3v [dragon]) have been coloured in red. Several contemporary underlinings and marginalia, including a lengthy note on earthquakes that supplements the printed text by additional sources, such as the Arabian astronomer Abu Ma'shar: "Erdbebung bedeute straff Gottes. Naturliche Ursachen nemlich die Hitz und würckung etlicher Planeten, mit der Sonnen, als Martis, Iovis, Saturni, und sönderlich sagt Albumasar vom Saturno. Bedeuten stets künfftig Unglück, wie auch Plinius danen saget, das kein Erdbidem zu Rom geschehen sey one Bedeutung künfftiger ding [...]" (c5v). Some browning and fingerstaining; quires S and e misbound; several small edge defects (larger in d5, k6); paper defects to D4 and (almost touching text) d6. Second issue by Herwagen (printed by him previously in 1550), first published at Ortona in 1518. The author "defends Catholicism against Judaism and also stands up for Reuchlin as regards the assaults of his contemporaries" (cf. Fürst). With many Hebrew passages and quotations. At the end: Reuchlin's "De arte cabbalistica" (not included in the first edition). [Ruscelli, Girolamo (ed.)].
Delle lettere di principi. Venice, Francesco Ziletti, 1581.
4to (152 x 208 mm). 3 volumes. (6), 236 ff. (6), 203 ff. (8), 284 ff. With woodcut printer's device to title-pages. Early 19th century full vellum with giltstamped spines and double labels. All edges gilt and goffered with a floral design. Rare collection of correspondence by significant personalities and rulers, including Andrea Doria, Annibale Caro, Baldassare Castiglione, Bernardo and Pietro Bibiena, Cardinal Bessarion, Lorenzo and Cosimo de' Medici, Pietro Gonzaga, Hieronimo Fracastoro, Giovanni Bembo, Francesco Guiccardini, Emperor Charles V, Pope Clement VII (Giulio de' Medici), etc. Important both as historical and linguistic documents; the definitive edition. - Ruscelli was a prolific and versatile Italian scholar who published on topics ranging from cartography to alchemy. A native of Viterbo, he eventually settled in Venice, where the first edition of "Delle Lettere Di Principi" was published in 1562 in a single volume. Der Herren Pfleger und Gehaimen Rät des heyligen Reichsstatt Augspurg. Warhaffter gegenbericht, der Augspurgischen Händel und gegründte widertreybung D. Georg Müllers nechstverschinen 1586. Jars in Truckh außgetrewten Famos gedichts. Augsburg, Valentin Schönig, 1587.
(104) Bll. VD 16, ZV 875. BM-STC German 51 (ohne Variantenunterscheidung). Holzmann/Bohatta II, 5559. Vgl. OCLC 65517149 (nur Mikrofilm). Nicht bei Adams.

Tractatus quidam de Turcis. Nuremberg, Conrad Zeninger, [after 3 May] 1481.
4to. 22 ff. (a7, b8, c7: wants first and last blanks). 32 lines, Gothic type. Rubricated throughout, 3 four-line lombardic initials, red penwork decoration at beginning of text. Later cream-coloured calf in contemporary style, with blind rules and stamped cover title "Tractatus De Turcis". Third edition of this polemical treatise against the Ottomans. Mainly contains prophecies referring to the Turks (by Merlin, Cyrillus, Joachim of Fiore, St. Hildegarde, Catherine of Siena, Methodius, etc.). Also one of the earliest texts to mention Hungary, and one of the very few works printed by Zeninger: "Conrad Zeninger (from Mainz) produced a mere 10-odd books between 1480 and 1482" (cf. Halle 70). The prophecy referring to the King of Hungary (fol. a[5]r) is reprinted by Fraknói Vilmos, "Schlauch Lörincz szatmári püspöknek Török János által gyüjtött könyvtára", in: Magyar Könyvszemle 2 (1877), p. 77-90, at: 77f. (cf. Apponyi). The date is based on the mention of the death of Mehmet II on fol. A[4]v. - Some browning, with slight waterstain throughout in lower margin; first and final leaf washed. Slight paper flaw in fol. 1 (not touching text); final leaf restored. Faint traces of a later ms. page count are visible near the lower edge. Occasional 16th-century marginalia. A fine copy of this rare work, rubricated throughout. HC 15681. Goff T-503. GW M48133. BMC II, 460. BSB-Ink T-437. Oates 1077. Proctor 2229. Walsh I, 794. Pellechet 11154.
