Crembs, Ignass Anton Präl, Wiennerisch-Universit. Buchdrucken, 1753. 10 pages. (20,5x16 Cm). Broché à l'époque sans couverture. Dos renforcé. Discours prononcé à la gloire de Saint Joseph de Cupertino et publié en 1753, à l'occasion de sa béatification par le Pape Benoît XIV. Ce saint italien, connu comme le "saint volant" en raison de ses nombreuses lévitations racontées par la légende, est le saint patron des astronautes, pilotes d'avion et leurs passagers. Il est aussi patron des étudiants, car une autre anecdote raconte la chance extraordinaire dont il avait bénéficié lors d'un examen pendant sa jeunesse. Ce mémoire en allemand fut imprimé dans la ville autrichienne de Krems, sur les rives du Danube, où l'imprimerie ne vit pas le jour avant 1713, selon Falkenstein. Le petit village de Stein qui lui sert de port sur le fleuve, abrite le monastère où fut prononcé le présent discours. Cachets anciens sur la page de titre.

Einzige Ausgabe. - Auseinandersetzung der westfälischen Ritterschaft mit den bischöflichen Kanonikern um die Frage der sog. Erbmänner (Inhaber einers Erblehens). - Titel mit Randläsuren und Restaurierungsspuren; durchgehend etwas gebräunt. Untere Einbandkanten etwas lädiert. Contemporary vellum; spines and covers attractively gilt; gilt supralibros. First edition of the collected works of the Tyrol Jesuit Scherer (1559-1605), rector of the Viennese college and a fervent preacher of counter-reformation. His polemics against Osiander, Heerbrand, and other Lutherans occasioned a long series of printed refutations. Scherer's writings prove that he was "ein rühriger, gewandter, schlagfertiger Schriftsteller [...] und sich zugleich durch einen für jene Zeit ganz vorzüglichen Stil auszeichnete [...] Darunter sind von bleibendem Werthe namentlich 'Neun und zwaintig Predigen ... von Notis, Merck- und Kenn-Zeichen der wahren und falschen Kirchen', eine gründliche, durchaus praktische, für das Volk leicht verständliche Abhandlung über die Kirche" (Wetzer/W.). Part 2 contains (at the end) the famous children's catechism. - Printed at the first and only 16th and 17th century press in Bruck an der Thaya (Louckem pod Znojmem) in Moravia, established in 1595 by abbot Sebastian II from Baden near Vienna. The printer was probably Bartholomäus Albert Fuhrmann; until the press was closed in 1608, it produced merely 22 known works. - Title page with contemp. ms. note by Johann Rupert Hegemüller, to whom the author himself had presented the volumes as a gift. Later in the collection of the Austrian local historian Candid von Engelshofen (1803-66; with his library stamp and shelfmark on title page); then in the library of the Bohemian nobleman Franz Graf Thun-Hohenstein (1809-70; with his heraldic bookplate on the front pastedown). Last in the collection of the Austrian industrialist Dr. Friedrich Petrina (1911-2004; with his etched bookplate on front pastedown). - Title page with insignificant defects to upper edge. Spine of vol. 2 with slight defects to upper spine-end; attractive giltstamping largely oxydized. Altogether a fine and clean copy with interesting provenance. Il date de l’année où, fraîchement associés, ils succédèrent à leur parent Isaac Elsevier comme imprimeurs officiels de l’Université de Leyde, ce qui les mettait en situation de développer la puissante firme que l’on sait. Cet ouvrage du professeur et savant hollandais Dirk Schrevel, recteur du Collège de Leyde, concerne précisément cet environnement scolaire. C’est un intéressant traité de pédagogie divisé en discours dans lesquels l’auteur évoque le rôle des écoles et leur organisation, les devoirs des professeurs et des élèves, la nécessité de la discipline et les moyens de la faire observer, l’émulation et les récompenses la favorisant, etc. Le volume contient à la fin un opuscule avec titre et pagination séparés, intitulé : “Zodiacus, sive de Corona Anni Oratio”. Ce texte curieux, inspiré du 65e psaume et composé à l’occasion du jour de l’an, décrit la course annuelle du soleil à travers la constellation du zodiaque. Outre certains passages sur le calendrier ou le mouvement des planètes, on y trouve notamment, pour chaque saison, une évocation gastronomique détaillée de leurs mets et saveurs spécifiques : fruits et légumes au printemps et en été, vins, cidres et gibier en automne, miel et poissons en hiver… Bel exemplaire, grand de marges. Papier un peu bruni. Rares taches.
