‎(Paris), Jehan Petit, sans date, (1519). Petit in-4 (136 x 199 mm) de (4)-CVIII ff. (sig. A B–T / ), caractères romains, veau brun estampé à froid composé de quatre colonnes d'abeilles dans un large encadrement floral, dos à cinq nerfs, traces de lacets (reliure de l'époque).‎

‎Belle impression sur deux colonnes sortie des presses de Jean de Gourmont pour Jehan Petit auquel le privilège royal fut accordé une première fois le 24 juillet 1515, reconduit à partir du 10 septembre 1519. Titre gravé sur bois avec la marque typographique de Jehan Petit (Renouard, Marques, n° 891) ; lettrines gravées sur bois (celle du recto du feuillet A2 aux armes du dédicataire) et caractères typographiques de Jean de Gourmont d'après Moreau ; figures gravées sur bois au verso du feuillet A1 (saint Jérôme), au recto du feuillet A4 (descente de Croix), et au verso du feuillet T8 (saint Jérôme répété sans encadrement). Épître dédicatoire de l'auteur à Joannes Gosthon de Zelesthe.Figure importante de l’Université de Paris durant la première moitié du XVIe siècle, Jérôme de Hangest (v.1480-1538) étudia les arts au collège de Reims, où il a pour maître Jean Tartaret (†1522), et on peut supposer qu’il obtient sa maîtrise en 1502 ou 1503. Il commence à enseigner les arts au Collège de Reims, et en même temps poursuit ses études de théologie au Collège de Sorbonne (1507). Licencié (26.I.1514) et Docteur (22.III.1514) en théologie. La même année, au mois d’août 1514, il fait partie des théologiens qui censurent l’oeuvre de l’humaniste allemande Johannes Reuchlin (1455-1522), ce qui lui vaudra une réputation de gardien de l’orthodoxie. Il enseigne ensuite la théologie et poursuit ses activités dans le domaine de la censure. Vers 1522, le cardinal Louis de Bourbon (†1535), devenu évêque du Mans (1519), le nomme chanoine de la cathédrale du Mans, puis scholasticus et finalement vicaire général. La charge est prestigieuse, Hangest administre tout le diocèse en l’absence du cardinal (qui vaque souvent à d’autres charges), s’y livre à la prédication, mais reste lié à Paris par l’intermédiaire du nouveau Collège du Mans, fondé et financé par Louis de Bourbon. Auteur prolifique, il a publié une logique, un De causis et de nombreux traités scolastiques anti-protestants. Du point de vue doctrinal, il défend fermement la théologie scolastique pour l’étude des sciences sacrées [Scholasticon, d'après Riccardo Quinto]. « Le traité de morale est pour sa plus longue partie plus philosophique que théologique : c’est une suite d’analyses subtiles de la volonté et des conditions de la vertu qui doivent beaucoup à l’Éthique. Nous devons en signaler cependant le «volontarisme». Dieu régit le macrocosme, l’âme le microcosme, et dans notre âme, si l’intelligence a un rôle de guide, la primauté de puissance appartient à la volonté : on peut tout vouloir, l’impossible comme le possible, le mal comme le bien. (…) Au fond la morale de Jérôme d’Hangest est fondée d’abord sur la raison et la conscience. Son livre, si vieux par sa méthode et son langage, prend vers la fin, quand il aborde la question du libre arbitre et de la grâce, une allure moderne » (Henri Buisson, Études rabelaisiennes 1965, VI, p. 46).Ex-libris manuscrits du temps "Jaquet Fagard" et "Petrus Chasselas" ; inscriptions manuscrites à l'encre du temps sur les première et dernière gardes et dans la marge supérieure de la figure de Saint Jérôme (feuillet T8).Exemplaire sans les deux derniers feuillets V1 (Privilège) et V2 (figure au verso : saint Michel terrassant le dragon). L'exemplaire conservé à la Bibliothèque de la Sorbonne porte l'adresse de Jean de Gourmont "Veneunt in edibus Joannis Gormontii ad insigne eminarum cipparum. Cum privilegio Regis" (ref. VCS 8= 18171 ; collation [4]-cviii-[2-2 bl.] f. : ill. ; in-4).4 exemplaires au CcFr (Abbeville, Semur en Auxois, Paris-Sorbonne, BnF). Discrètes restaurations sur la reliure ; large et pâle mouillure dans la partie haute de l'exemplaire, sinon très bon état intérieur. Early edition of this exceedingly rare Persian-Turkish lexicon, which was one of the earliest Persian dictionaries in the Islamic world, written by Hasan Suuri Efendi from Aleppo, one of the finance officers of the Ottoman Empire. First edition was printed in 1742 and was the last book in two volumes of the first Islamic printing house founded by Ibrahim Müteferrika. This copy is the second edition. All published. Henry Edmund Taffe had accused the Right Hon.William Downes of trespass with force of arms, in that he made an assault on him in Castle Street, in Dublin, and kept and detained him in prison, without any reasonable or probable course, for a long time, to wit, for the space of four hours. The damages were laid at ?5,000. Rare, JISC locating the BL copy only.‎
